A New Year's Prayer Dear God, Thank you that You make all things new. Thank you for all that You've allowed into our
lives this past year, the good along with the difficult things, which have reminded us how
much we need you. We pray for your Spirit to lead us each step of this New Year. We ask that you will guide our decisions and turn our hearts to deeply desire you above all else. We ask that you will open
doors needing to be opened and close the ones needing to be shut tight. We ask for help to pursue you first, above every dream and desire you’ve put within our hearts. We ask for your wisdom, for your strength and power to be constantly present within us. We
pray you would make us strong and courageous for the road ahead. Give us ability beyond what we feel able, let your gifts flow freely through us, so that you would be honored by our lives, and
others would be drawn to you. We ask that we may reflect your peace and hope to a world that so desperately needs
your presence and healing. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
The Staff
of St. Joseph Church
would like to wish you a very
Blessed & Happy New Year!
Help the Feast of the Epiphany come to life
for your children!
If your child aged 3-8, would like to participate in the
Epiphany procession at the beginning of mass, on Jan. 3rd at
11:00am, YOU MUST contact Beth Scholl at 941-3661 x15.
The children will dress in Nativity costumes we provide and
walk in procession with Fr. Umberg and the servers. Our Pre-
school, Kindergarten, 1st grade and First Communion students
can rejoin their parents for Mass, or go to their classrooms
(PREP will have activities and snack, while second graders will
have regular class). St. Joseph parishioners love to see your
children, innocently portraying the Three Kings and manger
scene.
Please arrive between 10:30-
10:35AM, so that we have time
to get the children dressed and
lined up! If you can help with
your own children, it would be
greatly appreciated.

Qualified Charitable Distributions Are you age 70 ½ and required by the IRS to take annual distributions from your IRA account? If so, you may consider making a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) from your IRA account directly to the church. QCD will satisfy your annual contribution requirement and will not be included in your taxable income for the year. This could be a great way to save taxes and financially support the church or your favorite charity. For more details on Qualified Charitable Distributions from your IRA account, please contact your tax advisor (we cannot give specific tax advice).
Mass Times during Inclement Weather
In order to keep you and our community safe during severe winter weather, we will cancel our weekday Masses
whenever the Three River school system is canceled. The Parish Office will open on a delayed status. All meetings and planned activities MAY be canceled as well. Please call the Parish Office at 941-3661 the day of
the meeting for updated information.
Unless there is a Level 3 Snow Emergency, the
weekend liturgies will take place as usual.
Sign Up To Pray A Minute - Do you believe in the power of prayer? Do you believe that our country is in desperate need of peace, justice and goodwill? If so, then go to www.PrayAMinute.com and pledge to pray just one minute more than you already do, every day, for the specific intention of peace, justice and goodwill. The site also contains inspiring reflections and useful prayer resources. Catholics from across the archdiocese are uniting in prayer from now until January 1, the World Day of Prayer for Peace, for the spiritual renewal of our country. Please join this movement!
Spanish???? You may have noticed that our new Book of Prayer intentions in the Gathering Space is bi-lingual! Please do not let that confuse you. The English portion is in black and the Spanish texts are in red! We welcome all your prayers and petitions!
Handicapped and Dietary needs at Mass - At St. Joseph Parish we pride ourselves on making sure that “All are Welcome.” Sometimes we are not aware of the needs of our members. If you are handicapped and cannot walk up the aisle to receive communion at Mass, let one of the Ushers know and they will make sure that someone comes to you. We also are aware of the ongoing dietary concerns of those who need to stay away from wheat. If you are one of those afflicted with that health issue, again let one of the Ushers know and they will make sure that you receive a low-gluten host. We hope to make everyone’s visit to St. Joseph a pleasant and welcoming experience.

Looking Ahead
The Year of St. Joseph
"WITH A FATHER'S HEART:
this is how Joseph loved Jesus,
called in all four Gospels 'the son
of Joseph'." Pope Francis begins
with these incisive words in his
Apostolic Letter, Patris Corde,
published on the 150th anniversary
of the decree, December 8, 1870,
by which, Blessed Pius IX declared
Saint Joseph, Patron of the Catholic Church. To worthily
celebrate the anniversary, Pope Francis has also
announced a special jubilee year in honor of St. Joseph.
In the letter Patris Corde the Pope shares "some personal
reflections on the extraordinary figure" of Saint Joseph,
reflections that the pandemic has motivated even more to
sharing. The crisis generated by Covid-19 has, in fact,
highlighted that our lives are woven and supported by
ordinary people - usually forgotten - who do not appear in
the headlines of newspapers and magazines or on various
stages, but who, without a doubt, are writing the decisive
events of our history today. People like St. Joseph, “the
man who goes unnoticed, a daily, discreet and hidden
presence,” who nonetheless played “an incomparable role
in the history of salvation.”

GOSPEL: Matthew 2:13-15, 19-23 Matthew’s gospel was written primarily for Jewish people who had become Christians. The community also included some Gentile converts. In his gospel, Matthew takes pains to portray Jesus as a true Israelite. In this story, Jesus’ jour-ney to Egypt as the new Moses is reminiscent of Israel’s trek to Egypt. Just as Moses escaped from Egypt, so does Jesus flee from Egypt and from violence? He come back to Nazareth in Galilee where many Gentiles are living. Jesus’ mission is not just to the Israelites, but also to the Gentiles. Today’s story is also a beautiful example of a father who is
Catholic Adult Education: December 29, 2019 Feast of the Holy Family
Scripture tells us practically
nothing about the first years and
the boyhood of the Child Jesus. All
we know are the facts of the
sojourn in Egypt, the return to
Nazareth, and the incidents that
occurred when the twelve-year-old
boy accompanied his parents to
Jerusalem. In her liturgy the
Church hurries over this period of
Christ's life with equal brevity. The general breakdown of the
family, however, at the end of the past century and at the
beginning of our own, prompted the popes, especially the far-
sighted Leo XIII, to promote the observance of this feast with
the hope that it might instill into Christian families something
of the faithful love and the devoted attachment that
characterize the family of Nazareth. The primary purpose of
the Church in instituting and promoting this feast is to
present the Holy Family as the model and exemplar of all
Christian families.

Prayer for the Feast of the Holy Family
Dear Lord, bless our family. Be so kind as to give us the unity, peace, and mutual love that You found in Your own family in the little town of Nazareth. Saint Joseph, bless the head of our family. Obtain for him the strength, the wisdom, and the prudence he needs to support and direct those under his care. Mother Mary, bless the mother of our family. Help her to be pure and kind, gentle and self-sacrificing. For the more she resembles you, the better will our family be. Lord Jesus, bless the children of our family. Help them to be obedient and devoted to their parents. Make them more and more like You. Let them grow, as You did, in wisdom and age and grace before God and man. Holy Family of Nazareth, make our family and home more and more like Yours, until we are all one family, happy and at peace in our true home with You. Amen.
