Welcome to Spring Open House!
At Cleveland State University, student success — your success — is our top priority. The secret of that success? We call it Engaged Learning.
When you enroll at CSU, your education won’t be confined to lecture halls, classrooms and labs. Through co-ops, internships and other experiential learning opportunities, CSU will connect you with virtually any workplace across the region, whether it be City Hall or the Cleveland Clinic or the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. There are CSU graduates working at all of the above who launched their careers there while they were students here. Like them, you’ll graduate with the hands-on experience you need to succeed in your chosen profession.
For 2019, CSU has again been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of America’s Best Colleges. The University is experiencing unprecedented growth and forward momentum. Last fall, we welcomed nearly 2,000 first-year students — our largest freshman class to date.
I hope you enjoy your visit to Cleveland State University today — and I look forward to welcoming you back soon as full-fledged Vikings!
Sincerely,
Harlan M. Sands, J.D., M.B.A. President

HOW DO I SUCCEED IN COLLEGE?
College graduates attest: Crossing the finish line is not just about going to class, but also about the resources and support services that are available to you. Find out about the numerous free services CSU offers to help you succeed in your academic career.
COLLEGE 101
Learning about a college education can be as confusing as learning a new language or visiting a foreign country. This session breaks down the basic structure of a university, helps you understand the parts involved in earning a degree and explains in plain English some of the terminology you will encounter on any college campus.
STRESSED ABOUT PICKING A MAJOR?
LET US HELP!
Selecting an academic major is one of the most difficult aspects of the college experience. This session dives deeper into myths and misconceptions about majors, the relationships between majors and careers and important factors to consider when deciding. If you’re currently exploring options, or even if you think you already have one decided, allow our first-year advising and career services staff to share their wealth of information and resources with you.
INTRODUCTION TO FINANCIAL AID
This session provides an opportunity for participants to learn about the financial aid application process. The cost of higher education and different types of financial aid will also be reviewed.
STUDENT HOUSING OPTIONS
As a CSU student, you may decide to commute from your family home, live in a CSU residence hall, lease from a university-approved apartment or lease from an off-campus landlord. It is up to you. Learn more about all of your options and estimated expenses, including information about the CSU residence halls — Euclid Commons and Fenn Tower.

TRANSFERRING TO CSU
If you’re thinking about transferring to CSU from another college or university, attend this session to learn more about the transfer application process, scholarship opportunities and resources available to help make your transition to CSU a success.
STUDENT ACTIVITIES AND
INVOLVEMENT AT CSU
At CSU, we understand that our students are working, commuting and going to school, but are still gaining an amazing experience both in and out of the classroom. This session will help students answer important questions: Is joining a fraternity or sorority for me? How do I find student organizations to get involved with? What are the big events on campus? How do I find an on-campus job? In this session, we hope to showcase all of the ways to get involved at CSU.
MOCK CLASS: MASS MEDIA
AND SOCIETY*
Professor Bolt will provide an exciting lecture from Com 226, Mass Media and Society — a class regularly taken by CSU students. This course is designed to increase students’ understanding of the impact of media on individuals and society. It will help students become more aware and critical consumers of media.
MOCK CLASS: SMART CITIES*
Do you live in a “smart city?” Smart cities are the digital cities of tomorrow, happening today. This presentation will provide an introduction to digital developments in urban environments, current smart city designs, sources of energy, the Internet of Things (IoT) and principles of sustainability.
MOCK CLASS: INTRODUCTION TO
COLLEGE WRITING*
Students can look forward to a fast-paced and interactive lesson that teaches them how to analyze new media in the digital age. Melanie Gagich, a college lecturer in the First-Year Writing Program, will offer prospective students a chance to test their rhetorical awareness skills. She will offer a brief review of rhetorical strategies (ethos, pathos and logos) before asking students’ to point out those strategies in digital, popular culture texts.
*MOCK CLASSES ARE YOUR CHANCE TO EXPERIENCE AN ACTUAL COLLEGE COURSE.
