curriculum and the opportunity to study in a supportive, safe and inspiring environment. The programme is tailored to the

needs of students of varying learning abilities and special needs. Our courses provide you with the skills and support to achieve accreditation, re-integrate into mainstream education or move

forward into post 16 education, training or employment.

Selection and Recruitment for 14-16 Learners

At South Essex College you will study in a supportive, safe and inspiring environment. You’ll do a lot more than read and write, you’ll get the chance to roll up your sleeves and get your hands on real-world equipment and tools that relate to your field of study. You’ll find we’re the perfect transition between school and post 16 college education.

All 14-16 Programmes aim to:• enhance self-belief through team building activities• promote active collaborative learning that fosters relationships• provide an educational experience which is challenging and enriching• offer an environment where students feel accepted and affirmed

Application Process

Step 1: School to complete and submit an application to [email protected] or [email protected] who will consider applications on an individual basis.

Step 2: The prospective student will attend college on a pre-agreed interview date to discuss course detail, expectations and potential progression routes.

Step 3: After a successful interview a formal offer will be made to the school.

Art & Design – Short Courses

Overview:You will get hands-on practical experience in a range of art and design techniques and disciplines, while gaining an understanding of the art and design industry.

What’s covered?Modules include• introduction to print• mixed media art• textiles• watercolour/acrylic art

In preparation for progression to post 16 study you will produce a portfolio of artwork along with a final piece of work based on a set brief.

Business & ICT

Overview:You will gain skills to help you enter the world of business and an understanding of the world of business.

What’s covered?Modules include• introduction to business and enterprise• introduction to web design• introduction to AAT• introduction to CILEX

You will gain an understanding of Dreamweaver software, finance and HR law, spreadsheets and basic accounts, principles of marketing and communicating with customers.

Construction - Short Courses

Overview:If you’re thinking about a career in the construction industry this could be the ideal course for you. You will gain an insight into the construction industry, covering elements of painting and decorating, bricklaying and tiling.

What’s covered?Modules include• basic health and safety• developing paint finishing skills• developing papering skills• developing plastering skills• developing tiling skills• developing brickwork skills

You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as boots and overalls.

Overview:This course is ideal if you are interested in a career in the hairdressing or beauty sector. This course is practical, hands-on, will develop your interpersonal and practical skills and provide you with a basic understanding of the hair and beauty industry.

You will be required to wear a salon uniform.

Overview:You will develop practical skills working in a kitchen environment and gain an understanding of the hospitality industry. Elements include introduction to customer service-front of house & service, food hygiene and healthy eating as well as basic food preparation.

You will be required to wear personal protection equipment such as an apron, hat and footwear.

Logistics and Supply Chain – Short Course


Overview:This course will provide you with an insight into the lucrative logistics industry and the skills to progress to a rewarding career.

Sport – Short Courses


Overview:If you are interested in sports and healthy living, or aspire to work within the sport and active leisure industry, this could be the course for you. Elements of this course include anatomy and physiology, fitness training, healthy lifestyle, health and safety in work areas and design a sports project.

You will be required to wear appropriate sportswear/footwear for practical sessions.
