Why do we study Social studies?• Many think it is only about history so learning
dates, times and numbers
NO• Social Studies looks at not only our country’s
past but also the world• Understand where we came from and how/why
we are moulded into what we are today• Looks at ideals and defines people• the unique nation that we are today are by the
direct influences of our forefathers, and learning their history also gives us valuable insights to understanding ourselves
Achievement objectives
• 4 major units – Leadership and Change in China – Understand the
ways in which leadership have consequences for communities and societies. Understand that events have causes and effects
– Pacific Island Communities – understand how cultural interaction impacts on cultures and societies
– The Wild West – understand that people move between places and how this has consequences for people and the places
– Decision Makers – understand how systems of government in NZ operate and affect people’s lives and how NZ system compares to other systems
Achievement objectives
• 2 mini units –Skills and Writing – learn graphing
and mapping skills required in Social Studies. Learn skills required to write constructive essays. –Our Place in the World – understand
NZ’s place in the world and be able to locate and name major world and NZ natural and cultural features
