Our goals for this evening: !  Introduce House Bill 5 and the new graduation

requirements as we know them today !  Share what can be done at this time !  Provide a tentative time-line for our 8th graders !  Answer as many questions as possible at the end

of the presentation

Two things to remember as we go through this presentation:

!  This is an introduction, a starting point. The state is still in the process of making decisions, and districts still have decisions to make. We will be giving the most current information, and we will not be addressing specifics.

!  What a student decides in 8th grade is not etched in stone!!!! This is a starting point and changes can be made along the way!

House Bill 5 Graduation Program

•  Replaces current Recommended, Distinguished Achievement and Minimum Plans

•  Begins in 2014-15 for current 8th grade students •  Provides for current 9th and 10th graders to opt for new

graduation plan in lieu of current plan •  Provides flexibility for students to pursue courses related to

their interests and aptitudes •  Prepares BISD students for college and careers

House Bill 5 Graduation Requirements for Implementation in 2014-15

Graduation Requirements: Every BISD student is required to complete 22 credits as specified below. Students will earn endorsements for a total of 26 credits.

Foundation: •  English (4 Credits)

•  English I, II, III and Advanced English Course •  Math (3 Credits)

•  Algebra I, Geometry and Advanced Math Course •  Science (3 Credits)

•  Biology, IPC or Advanced Science and additional Advanced Science •  Social Studies (3 Credits)

•  US History, US Government/Economics, World Geography or World History

Graduation Requirements (continued): Distinguished Level of Achievement (26 Credits): •  To earn the distinguished level, students must complete requirements of

the foundation program, complete Algebra II and earn an endorsement.

Performance Acknowledgement: May be earned for outstanding performance on the following: •  12 hours of college coursework including dual credit and Advanced

Technical Credit •  On college AP exam •  On PSAT, ACT-PLAN, SAT or ACT •  For earning nationally recognized industry licensure or certification

foundation subjects
