Observation- is an activity of humans, consisting of receiving knowledge of the outside world through the senses, or the recording of data using scientific instruments.

Inference- draws a conclusion or offers an explanation based on observations

II. Observation vs. Inference

1. Write down 15 observations about this classroom. *Remember an observation can be seen, heard, felt, recorded, or smelled*

2. For each observation write down an inference. *Remember an inference is a conclusion based on observations*

III. What is bias?Bias is a state of mind when you have already

decided on the issue without even knowing the full facts. You may call it prejudice or being partial.

Example: I think the Cleveland Indians are the best team in Major League Baseball. They will win the World Series this year.

1. Tonight when you go home make 5 observations about your house, family, yard, or your neighbors.

2. After you have made your 5 observations, use those observations to make 5 inferences.

3. Use the same paper that you took notes on today.
