Seed Stitch Rib Hat
Size:
Adult (12-24 months, 3-6 years, 7-11 years)
Gauge: 6 stitches and 12 rows = 3 inches in 2x2 rib
Materials:
Aran weight yarn slightly heavier than worsted, not quite bulky - around 100 yards should cover it
US Size 10 Circular Needle, 24 inches
US Size 13 Circular Needle, 24 inches
Tapestry Needle Stitch Markers (10)
Skills Used:
Long tail cast-on, knitting in the round, knit stitch, purl stitch, decreasing, picking up stitches, a small amount of the
magic loop method (which could be entirely avoided with the use of double pointed needles, this is only necessary
when decreasing the top of the hat and the stitches become too few for your standard circular needle)
Abbreviations:
K Knit
P Purl
K2tog Knit two together
PM- Place Marker
To begin:
CO 60(44, 48, 52) stitches using long tail cast-on onto one US Size 10 circular needle.
Join for working in the and work 2 x 2 rib (k2, p2) for 12(12, 10, 9) rounds.
Change to a US Size 13 circular, and begin working seed rib rows as follows:
R1: knit
R2: 1 x 1 rib (k1, p1)

Knit next row, placing a stitch marker every 6 stitches, creating 10 groups of 6.
Decrease rows:
Each group of 6 currently looks like this: k, p, k, p, k, p
R1: repeat k1, p1, k1, p1, k2tog for each group
R2: repeat k3, k2tog for each group
R3: repeat k1, p1, k2tog for each group
R3: repeat k1, k2tog for each group
R4: repeat k2tog for each groupOne stitch is left for each group, ten total. Cut yarn with 1 foot remaining. Bring yarn tail through each of 10 remaining
stitches, pull, and fasten inside of hat. Tie in beginning loose end as well.
12-24 Months
Knit next row, placing a stitch marker at the following intervals: 6, 5, 6, 5, 6, 5, 6, 5
6 stitches (Place marker (PM)), 5 stitches (PM), 6 stitches (PM), 5 stitches (PM),
6 stitches (PM), 5 stitches (PM), 6 stitches (PM), 5 stitches (PM)
Decrease rows:
Work each group of 6 and 5 in pattern, except for the last two stitches, which will be k2tog. Continue to work in the
round until groups have 1 and 2 stitches left.
Cut yarn with 1 foot remaining. Bring yarn tail through each remaining stitch, pull, and fasten inside of hat. Tie in
beginning loose end as well.
3-6 Years
Knit next row, placing a stitch marker every 6 stitches, creating 8 groups of 6.
Decrease rows:
Each group of 6 currently looks like this: k, p, k, p, k, p
R1: repeat k1, p1, k1, p1, k2tog for each group
R2: repeat k3, k2tog for each group
