Finding Success in First Grade
Don’t do for your child, what they can do for themselves, but please set them up for success by:
Early bedtime Arrive on time Eat a great breakfast & pack a snack Develop routines (take home folder,
library books…) Help with homework
Homework in First Grade
READ, READ, READ every day for 10-20 minutes
Practice weekly word wall words
Play math games
Homework:It’s a 4-Step Process!
Step 1: Take it home
Step 2: Do it, make sure it’s complete
Step 3: Bring it back to school
Step 4: Turn it in!
Doing Homework:
Work independently as much as possible (this may mean skipping parts).
Get help on any parts that were skipped (go back to working independently if possible).
Finger check together (make sure the work is complete and correct).(I will look for notes about misunderstandings or difficulty)
Book It! A reading incentive program that runs October-March.
Goal: To read 60 minutes each week.
Use the Reading Homework Calendar to record minutes.
Earn a mini-pizza certificate for Pizza Hut each month.

Daily SchoolworkWhat your child knows, or does not know, should not
come as a surprise to you at report card and conference time.
Everything we do is based on an activity, not a handout.
Incorrect/incomplete responses will be circled.
Reflection, not perfection, is the goal.
Select a time to review work brought home together with your child.
Report Cards:
Three marking periods with ending dates of:
December 3rd
March 18th
June 17th
All report cards will be sent home with your child.
Fall Conferences
November 9th and November 11th
15 minutes

Outstanding Behavior Certificates: Weekly notes with stickers Missing only one = lunch with
