New US Soccer youth initiatives to improve player developmentIn August 2015 US Soccer (USSF) introduced new initiatives that will impact all levels of youth soccer across the country. These initiatives will be rolled out across GPS starting Fall 2016.

The two key initiatives that will be introduced are:• Birth year registration (January 1st cut off)• Standardization of Small-sided games

These changes are aimed to align the whole country in a consistent approach and provide an age appropriate environment for long term player development. This will apply to all age groups from U6 and older. The change to birth year registration will align with the rest of the world.

Standardization of Small-Sided Games• 2009/2010: 4v4 No offsides, no goalkeeper. 30x20 yards field• 2007/2008: 7v7 With goalkeeper and offside rule in place• 2006/2005: 9v9 Field size approx 1/2 size of full 11v11 field. The final transition before 11v11 play• 2004+ 11v11 Full field
