GAASTRA PRO IS TESTED IN PROFESSIONAL RACING CONDITIONS Gaastra was established as a sail-making company in 1897.
Founder Douwe Gaastra was driven by the ambition to
make sailing gear better, faster and more efficient. Years
of experience later, Gaastra Pro has become a respected
name in technical sailing gear. Gaastra Pro is tested by
professionals under the most extreme conditions. It offers
optimal protection and comfort for all types of sailing, on all
types of water, in all kinds of weather conditions.
You can count on it.

Maximum protection from wind and water and maximum
comfort are the top items on any sailor’s wish list. It takes
state-of-the-art high-tech materials to live up to these
high standards. Gaastra uses Toray fabrics to combine
perfect waterproof properties with excellent breathability.
IBQ Kevlar® provides extra protection and comfort. BEMIS
tape prevents water from seeping through the seams, while
RiRi zippers make sure that a zipped up jacket really does
keep the crew dry.
Only the best is good enough.
TORAY FABRIC: high-performance fabric that keeps water out and allows perspiration to escape.
BEMIS: thermoplastic adhesive film applied to sewn seams to prevent water and wind penetration.
RIRI ZIPPERS: engineered to keep you dry and comfortable so that you can concentrate on performance.
IBQ: highly durable Kevlar®-reinforced fabric that offers comfort and protection.

Sponsoring
Wherever serious sailing is going on, there is usually a
Gaastra logo in sight. The Gaastra sponsorship program
reaches from the small inland lakes of the Netherlands to
the vast blue waters surrounding the Caribbean island of
Saint Barth. It includes partnerships in renowned regattas,
like the Copa del Rey, as well as sponsorship of professional
sailing crews competing in the most challenging races.
Gaastra also supports talents, like ‘Team Steven’, two young
Dutch aces aiming for Olympic gold in London.
Being involved at all levels of ambitious sailing is part of the
steady course that Gaastra embarked on years ago. Gaastra
offers the perfect mix of functionality and fashion. Talented
designers take care of the fashion part. For top-notch
performance, we get feedback from people who actually
spend time on the water. After all, how can you judge the
quality of waterproof zippers if you have never been ambushed
by a huge roller splashing over the bow?

Team Azzurra FROM A RICH HISTORY TO A PROMISING
FUTURE
GAASTRA SUPPORTS TEAM AZZURRA. This legendary
Italian yachting team, founded by H.H. the Aga Khan on
Sardinia, achieved many impressive successes in the 1980s.
These sparked an unprecedented blaze of passion for
regattas in Italy. Azzurra is to Italian yachting enthusiasts
what Ferrari is to Formula 1 fans. In 2008, some thirty
years after its final race, Team Azzurra was brought back
to life. And it immediately took the regatta racing world
by storm.
In the 2009 Louis Vuitton Trophy, Team Azzurra reestablished
its illustrious reputation with pride. Newspapers raved of
‘match racing made simple’ when Francesco Bruni guided his
crew to a 2-0 victory over Emirates Team New Zealand in the
final. A more impressive comeback was hardly imaginable.
Consistent results in the Audi MedCup and other regattas
prove that this success was not an accident. Team Azzurra
is back, and yet again it is a force to be reckoned with on the
open waters. WWW.AZZURRA.IT

Most people who enjoy the nautical lifestyle are not out
to win regattas. They just want a taste of the sun, wind,
water and the pleasure of a bit of sailing. But even if you’re
not trying to set a new speed record, getting the ship to
move can be hard work. No sweat! Gaastra Sportswear
jackets are ultra light, ergonomic and breathable. Whether
you are trying to go as fast as you can or just lounging
on deck, they keep you dry and comfortable. Because they
incorporate the latest fashion trends in distinct Gaastra
style, looking good comes standard as well.

Every year the designers of the Sportswear collection create
a line using the classic red, white and blue pallet. And every
year they manage to come up with something completely
new, fresh and dif ferent with these traditional nautical
colors. This year their creations are dominated by an
exuberant, intense red. It’s the color of passion and courage,
and also of temptation and guilt… So whatever you’re doing

Nautical stripes are a familiar Gaastra fashion feature. They are
embedded in the company’s DNA and are found in almost every
collection Gaastra creates. So when trend watchers reported that
stripes would be hot in 2012, it didn’t exactly cause a shock wave.
The designers simply continued what they do best: creating the ultimate updated
version of this great nautical tradition.

Finally leaving the marina. The plan is to sail from Gibraltar to Mallorca. We have been
looking forward to this trip for weeks. With our busy schedules, the final preparations were
all last-minute. Phoebe missed her flight, booked a new one and barely made it on time.
All that stress is now drifting away on a gentle breeze while we motor out to open sea.

old, the entire facility was completely revamped. Because of
the great weather and conditions around the island, many
professional sailing crews have their training sessions here.
We are not here to hone our skills. The rest of our trip will

Take one of the most prestigious yacht clubs in the world, add
a fine selection of competitive racing classes and sprinkle
it with the blessing of a king. This is the recipe for one of
the world’s most exciting regattas, and that’s precisely the
Copa del Rey.
For more than thirty years now, the Real Club Náutico de
Palma on Mallorca has set the stage for the Copa del Rey.
‘The King’s Cup’ attracts a fleet of the world’s top competitors
in different racing classes, including Swan45. In 2011 no
less than 130 ships entered the race. Imagine watching top
crews perform their magic, while the summer sun brings
out the best of this beautiful Balearic island. It just doesn’t
get any better.

the hand-made look and rich details are sure to impress even the most exacting fashion
patrols. Gaastra Footwear is probably the best example of the functional lifestyle philosophy:
clearly inspired by Gaastra's nautical heritage, in line with today’s trends and up to the
job of recreational yachting. Gaastra Footwear offers the preppy chic Breton collection
and the crisp and clean Sportswear collection, both with men’s and women’s models.

atmosphere. Saint Bar thélemy is one of the French
Leeward islands of the Lesser Antilles. With a total area
of only 21 square kilometers and a population of less than
9,000, it is hard to imagine that this island could host
a world class event. But according to Bouwe Bekking,
Les Voiles de Saint Barth is going to be one of the main
events of the Caribbean yachting calendar this season.
“Here in the Caribbean there’s a lot of competition, nearly
every island has its own event. This is only the second edition
of the Voiles de Saint Barth and there are already seventy
boats entered. Normally in a second year of an event there
are no more than about thirty boats. Gaastra’s organization
is just superb. They are setting an example of how a regatta
should be run, and it shows. People are coming back and
even more competitors are coming.” With several Volvo
Ocean Races and a shipload of other regattas under his belt,
Bouwe Bekking knows what he’s talking about.

Bekk ing f in ished four th sai l ing the Highland
Breeze in the 2011 edit ion of the Voiles de
Saint Barth. “We were sailing a cruising boat
against state-of-the-art racing yachts like the
Rambler. That was quite a challenge.” A freak accident
put a dent in the team’s chances of winning. “One of
our guys was organiz ing the fore deck. He stepped
on a glass hatch and went right through it. Normally a
hatch like that shouldn’t break. He was injured quite
badly. That’s why it took us so long to take the spinnaker
down. Medical attention had priority. Understandably
it cost us dearly. It’s just one of those things that can
happen. And it can happen in an instant.”
With its pearly white beaches, gorgeous blue ocean and
wonderful sunny climate it is always a pleasure to spend
time on Saint Barth. But during Les Voiles, the island
turns into a paradise for anyone interested in yachting.
The conditions guarantee exciting races. “Our boat likes
a good breeze. And that’s the great thing about the
Caribbean. We had 20 to 25 knots all week.” The event
attracts top talent from all over the world. The relaxed
at t itude of the local people is the icing on the cake.
Les Voiles de Saint Barth is a truly magical event.

A tribute to nautical history and Gaastra's own classic heritage.
Gaastra Breton is all about subtle elegance. This timeless
classic collection is named after the nautical Breton stripe,
one of history’s most iconic designs. But Gaastra has a
lot more to offer than striped garments. Breton is a high-
spirited collection, with a rich mix of materials, patterns,
appliqués, emblems and details.

ITALIAN RIVIERA Pastel colors paint the picturesque
rows of houses along this famous Italian coastline. The
Gaastra Italian Riviera line combines these hues with
the sweet colors of pistachio, vanilla and strawberry ice
cream. It’s a playful and romantic collection with stylish
upbeat designs like multi-colored checks, stripes and
millefleur prints.
CAPRI REGATTA Navy combined with shades of white
dominate the Capri Regatta line. The color scheme sets an
authentic nautical tone intensified by the use of rich linen
and structured canvas. Washed-out blues, warm orange
accents and an overall sea-weathered look add a rugged feel.

THE C APRI REGATTA LINE IS NAMED AFTER A FAMOUS ITALIAN ISLAND. It is one most luxurious
getaways for the wealthy of the Mediterranean. Every year a
host of A-list celebrities is spotted on Capri. The tiny island
in the Gulf of Naples boasts a number of exclusive stores
that would be the pride of any large city. All of Italy’s most
famous designer brands are represented. The average price
for mooring your yacht here is a staggering €3100 a day.
That is, if you can get a spot. Due to the limited number
of berths and the island’s immense popularity, you’ll have
to book months in advance.

When it comes to iconic nautical clothing, the pea coat has
to be top of the list. For centuries, this classic design was
part of the standard uniform of many navy sailors in the
United States and Europe. The classic pea coat (or ‘caban’
as it is sometimes called) is a heavy wool, double-breasted
overcoat with broad lapels, large wooden or metal buttons
and vertical or slash pockets. American newspapers mention
the pea jacket as early as the 1720s. The pea coat quickly
became popular among the general public and has never
really been out of style since.
In the 1960s and 1970s Jacky Kennedy Onassis was often
seen in contemporary versions. That is why pea coats
worn by women are often referred to as 'Jacky O' jackets.
This year’s Breton collection offers a selection of double-
breasted cardigans and jackets for both men and women.
It is a worthy tribute to a true icon and perfectly in line with
the timeless classic look and feel of the Breton collection.

THE ITALIAN RIVIERA COLLECTION is inspired by one
of Italy’s most illustrious regions. Extending down from the
city of Genoa, the Italian Riviera strings together a delightful
array of picturesque fisher towns. Each has its own distinct
charm. Here is all you could wish for: beautiful landscapes,
a mild climate, rich history and many romantic little streets
and squares. Sailing along past the characteristic pastel
colored houses, old harbors and churches, you know that
you’ve set course for history.
Moor in one of the towns and discover how much there is
to experience here. Although most of the villages are
minuscule, many are world famous. Portofino has only some

ages. A trip along the Italian Riviera is magical. A sure bet
