Turn the Tide Hero Award Your mission is to complete 5 out of the 8 tasks below to become a Turn the Tide Portishead Hero. Once you have completed your tasks, you can collect your certificate and special Turn the Tide Hero badge. Please remember that while the Hero award is free, we would appreciate a donation towards

our work at Turn the Tide Portishead.

Task to complete Tick when achieved

Date of completion

I have completed a 2 minute beach clean using a ‘2 minute beach clean’ board (this could be in Portishead or on holiday). Visit beachclean.net/ for help.

I have completed 2 different litter picks (this could be on a beach, in a park, at school or around where you live so that we can take pride n where we live).

I have helped share the message of Turn the Tide with others (you could design your own poster with a message to reduce and refuse plastic; write a letter to a shop/politician/manufacturer/business to reduce plastic use; or create a leaflet about other alternatives to using plastics).

I have helped with the recycling at home and put items into the correct box (use page 7 & 8 in this booklet to help you put items into the right boxes).

I have used alternatives to single use plastic (you could use a reusable bottle; use paper or bamboo party plates or cups for a party; or use canvas bags for shopping).

I have refused single use plastic (like refusing a straw in your drink, refusing single use plastic drinks bottles; not using cotton buds with plastic sticks; or say no to plastic cutlery).

I have refilled my bottle with water at 3 different refill locations (remember to use the refill app to find out where you can refill your bottle for FREE!).

I have recycled at school (you can help by using both sides of paper before recycling it; recycle pens in your school’s recycle box; and now you can recycle crisp packets too at school, Waitrose, the youth centre or Parish Wharf).

Hi, my name is Charlie and we want to help you become a Turn the Tide Hero.

Make sure you ask an adult for help with the tasks and maybe get your whole family involved as every little helps. Please remember to be safe and when litter picking follow the safety advice.

You need to complete 5 out of these 8 tasks to achieve your Hero badge but you could try to complete all of the tasks!

Turn the Tide Colouring Page Can you spot the 10 different pieces of litter and colour the picture?

Hi, I’m Daisy! Can you spot the 10 pieces of litter? If you can, you would be a great help at our litter pick-ing events on our different beaches so why not come along with an adult and help us. Check our website or Facebook page for the next beach clean date.

Hi, I’m Tommy and by helping with the litter picking on our

beaches, you can help keep our

rivers, seas and oceans clean!

How many litter picks can you help

with this year?

Turn the Tide Plan a Party Can you help plan a plastic free and ocean friendly party?

Often at parties, people decorate with balloons which Turn the Tide want to stop as they cause so much damage to our seas and oceans. Can you think of ways to decorate a party without using plastic and only use decorations which can be reused or recy-cled? Draw a picture and write your ideas (maybe even draw a room all decorated ready for your party!).

What about the food and drink? How can you serve your food and drink without using plastic plates or cups?

Recycle at Home What can you recycle at home in North Somerset?

Hi, did you know it takes around 20 seconds to empty a sorted recycling box.

However, a jumbled box takes about two minutes so please help separate your recycling into the boxes to make it quicker and easier! Thank you.

Make yourself a Turn the Tide Hero out of a cardboard kitchen or toilet roll tube and scrap paper.

You could make it into a puppet using a lollipop stick you have cleaned.

Have fun saving the sea and planet with your new hero!

Turn the Tide Recycle Project Your mission is to recycle items at home into something new by upcycling. Choose from the ideas

below or use your imagination to recycle and reuse for your own project. Ideally, we would like you to use your rubbish which currently cannot be recycled where possible so that you can reuse and recycle!

Help the environment even more by making used bottles into plant pots or bird feeders. Don’t forget to ask an adult to help with the cutting as plastic edges can be very sharp.

Turn yourself into a Turn the Tide Hero by creating an outfit from recycled materials. Make a mask from cardboard like a cereal box; use up old clothes and turn them into a fab costume or cape and you could even make yourself a super litter picking utility belt!

Why not ask your parent or carer to send us a photo of you in your outfit or come to a beach clean dressed up ready to be one

of our Turn the Tide heroes!

Saving money? Try making a piggy bank from a cleaned bottle and decorate it with recycled bottled lids or used card-board. Don’t forget to ask an adult to help with the cut-ting as plastic edges can be very sharp.

Use your imagination and create a piece of art using your recycling. Here is an idea using plastic bottle lids but your art work can use your recycling in any way you want.

My friends and I would love to see what you can create by recycling and reusing. Send me a photo and it may make it onto our website or Facebook page. Remember to get an adult’s permission though!

Refill is a national scheme so you can refill

your bottle around the UK. If you use the

Refill App, you can collect reward points too

which can be redeemed to get a free

stainless steel water bottle (much better

than plastic bottles!).

Did you know… over the last 15 years, the use of bottled water has doubled in the UK. Of

the 13 billion plastic bottles used each year, an estimated 7.7 billion (nearly 60%) are

plastic water bottles!? Sadly, it’s been estimated that almost half of these bottles are NOT

recycled and around 15 million plastic bottles are littered, landfilled or incinerated every

day – ending up in our natural environment and flowing into our oceans! (from https://

refill.org.uk/)

You can help by refilling your

drink bottle at school and even

when on holiday using the Refill

App. Earn points on the App to

get a reward!
