Welcome to Our New Principal, Mrs. Karen Tomasetti!!!

Come back to me, with all your Heart. Don’t let fear keep us apart...Long have I waited for your coming home to me...

(Hosea. Gregory Norbet, OSB, 1972.)

When Louise Sheehan retired as Principal last year, we knew her role in our school would be tough to fill. Those of you that met our new Principal, Mrs. Tomasetti, undoubtedly thought to yourself how fortunate and blest we are to have her here with us at St. Dorothy School. If you have not had the pleasure of meeting her yet, the introductory letter she wrote will tell you everything you need to know...

As I unconsciously sang these words during the offertory one early Sunday in March I was simultaneously asking God for a sign as I had just recently heard of Mrs. Sheehan’s retirement. My time in prayer ended as I listened to myself singing these words. Grateful for his message, I thanked God for listening. “Remain silent and give God time to speak” was always one of my messages to the children before me. Walking to the car I shared with my husband what had taken place in church. He smiled, looked at the rectory and said, “Go talk to Fr. Murphy now.” I waited a week and made the call.

My husband, Joe and I moved back to St. Dorothy parish a little over a year after getting married, at this same altar where I received my First Holy Communion, Reconciliation and Confirmation. In 1997 Fr. Murphy was baptizing our daughter, Domenica, the same spot we were taking vows 2 years prior. St. Dorothy has always been a home to me, and now my family for 21 years.

I began first grade here, made many friends and graduated “Dots Class of 81.” Cardinal O’Hara was my next stepping-stone, before moving on to Neumann College where I received my Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education with a Minor in Psychology. I graduated college in 1989, worked at Philadelphia International Airport for a year, met my future husband, (you never know why things happen) and then started my teaching career in 1990 at St. Andrew School in Drexel Hill. Being a part of St. Dorothy Parish has always been such a significant part of my life. I am grateful to my parents for the faith they instilled in us and choosing St. Dorothy as our school and parish. Raising a family is a partnership with those you entrust your family to. It is my hope that you and your families have had similar experiences. My desire for St. Dorothy School is to always remain, as Fr. Through the dedication of teachers and parents, St. Dorothy students will be prepared to solve problems and become leaders of the future, leaders who practice their faith and Give Witness to Christ.

Thank you for the warm welcome I have received I am looking forward to this journey with my St. Dorothy family.Live Giving Witness to Christ.

Please Welcome the Newest Members of the Faculty & Staff at St. Dorothy

The Gust family (from left: Finley, Kelly, Delaney, Brendan & Jonathan)

Mrs. Janiene Kwoczak

Miss Victoria Messina

Miss Emily Paradise

Mrs. Mary Porth

Mrs. Coleen Scheb

Kelly Gust, Advancement DirectorMrs. Gust is excited to join the staff in this new position at St. Dorothy School. As a parent of two,

soon to be three, St. Dorothy students, she has volunteered in many capacities over the last six years. After having served as homeroom parent, on the Oktoberfest Fair, the Development Committee, and more, Mrs. Gust could not be happier to now serve the school community in a more formal role.

As Advancement Director, she will assist Principal Tomasetti with enrollment management, development, communications, and constituent and public relations of the school—activities that create a supportive climate for enrollment and fundraising. The goal is to provide sufficient resources to ensure St. Dorothy School can achieve its mission and continue to thrive.

Mrs. Gust grew up in this area and attended Our Lady of Fatima, Cardinal O’Hara, and Villanova University (17 years of Catholic education!). Upon graduation, she remained at Villanova in Student Services in the Department of Athletics. She then moved on to the Atlantic 10 Conference and has been a statistician at local college basketball games. Mrs. Gust and her husband, Jonathan, feel very fortunate to raise their children in St. Dorothy Parish and to be a part of this school and community!

Mrs. Janiene Kwoczak, ArtMrs. Kwoczak has been an educator since 2006, teaching students ranging in age from Pre-K to high

school. Her academic background includes a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Temple University with a major in sculpture and a state certified art education concentration. She lives in this area with her husband and two young children. Mrs. Kwoczak looks forward to helping the students create art that reflects the values of the St. Dorothy community.

Miss Victoria Messina, Grade 6 Miss Messina is a member of Sacred Heart Parish, where she attended elementary school. She is a

recent graduate of Cabrini University and received her Bachelor’s degree and Pennsylvania certifications in Elementary Education and Special Education. Prior to St. Dorothy’s, she student-taught in a third grade classroom in Lower Merion School District as well as in sixth, seventh, and eighth grade classrooms at The Vanguard School in Malvern. Her experiences also include substituting throughout the Lower Merion School District and an extended school year teacher at The Vanguard School. She is looking forward to a year full of learning, fun and adventures, while growing in faith!

Miss Emily Paradise, Kindergarten Miss Paradise was born in Darby and grew up in Drexel Hill. She now lives with her family in

Broomall. She went to St. Laurence and St. Anastasia for grade school, graduated from Archbishop John Carroll High School, and graduated from Cabrini College with a Bachelor’s of Science in Education in 2015. She is certified by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in Elementary and Special Education. After graduation, she taught third grade at St. Ephrem School in Bensalem for two years. Her passion for teaching was sparked by her own kindergarten teacher. Over the years she became more interested in teaching through tutoring, babysitting, working as a nanny, and working with special needs students in a program called Best Buddies. She is very excited to be teaching Kindergarten at St. Dorothy!

Mrs. Mary Porth, Spanish Mrs. Porth is making the transition to Spanish teacher after substitute teaching in every grade at St.

Dorothy School last year. She holds a B.A. from St. Joseph’s University with a major in International Relations, a minor in Spanish, and a certificate in Latin American Studies. Foreign language study offers multiple academic and cognitive benefits to the school children. Mrs. Porth believes it also provides a natural path to a greater understanding of Catholic social values, which call us to respect all people regardless of external differences. Mrs. Porth and her husband, Steve, are longtime parishioners. Five children (all graduates of St. Dots), one daughter-in-law, one son-in-law, a two-year-old grandson, and two grand moms fill up their family life.

Mrs. Coleen Scheb, Grade 5 Mrs. Coleen Scheb earned her Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Cabrini College.

She is currently back at Cabrini furthering her education and reactivating her certification. She has taught Pre-K through seventh grade at Saint Andrew School in Drexel Hill. Mrs. Scheb grew up in Drexel Hill and continues to live in the area with her husband and three children. After a 10-year leave of absence to raise her family, she is very excited to be back in the classroom to teach, nurture, and support our St. Dorothy students.

Good-bye, HelloThe Development Committee focuses on relationship building

and fundraising to support Saint Dorothy School. A particular goal is to strengthen the educational experience of our children at St. Dorothy. Sounds simple, doesn’t it? But, in reality, the Development Committee is involved in numerous aspects of the school, almost anything for which resources might be needed and almost everything that could be considered promoting the school.

The Development Committee can only be successful in this endeavor with a focused and committed leader. That individual keeps in touch with all the members of the various subcommittees to ensure all the projects are running smoothly. The chair interacts regularly with the pastor, the school principal, the Home & School Association, and the Parish Finance Committee. The chair of the Development Committee needs to be organized, diplomatic, enthusiastic, and full of energy, and most of all, must love St. Dorothy School. The Development Committee has been blessed to have leaders who possessed these traits in abundance.

Peter McGahey, who served as chair since 2014, has stepped down. We wish to thank him for his exemplary service. During his years at the helm, Peter oversaw the changeover of the committee from many of the original members to an almost entirely new group of people. The urgency of the school’s needs had been alleviated by the phenomenal job done by the founding members of the committee. Peter’s job was, in some ways, more challenging. He needed to ensure that the same dedication and hard work continued so that the progress

St. Dorothy School had made would not be lost. Peter oversaw a newsletter that grew from a source of information on the Annual Fund to a means of connecting alumni and supporters to St. Dot’s and letting them see how our students are benefitting from their support. Peter began the process of overhauling the school’s website and added an activities fair to the Catholic Schools Week Open House. He was a tireless supporter of the EITC program, which allows individuals and businesses to direct some of their tax dollars directly to the school to provide financial aid to qualifying students. Peter is stepping down from the committee, but his investment in St. Dot’s remains.

We are pleased to announce that Carolyn Corr (‘96) has accepted Fr. Murphy’s invitation to serve as the new chair of the Development Committee. Carolyn was already a member of the committee, and her energy and creativity have enhanced many of the committee’s activities. She brings ambitious plans to build on the strong campaigns that are in place and increase support of our Oktoberfest and Annual Fund Campaign not only in dollars but also in participation and volunteering. Carolyn has daughters in 4th grade and 1st grade, and her youngest daughter (in Pre-K) will soon be joining her sisters as a St. Dorothy student. So, we are confident that the Development Committee will continue to thrive under Carolyn’s leadership for many years.

(*Marie Pat Romano has volunteered to remain on the board for an additional year in an advisory role due to the change in Principal and Faulty Representative also occurring at the end of the 2017 school year.)

After 20 years, a tradition continues for St. Dorothy Parish in Drexel Hill. Saturday, June 3, 2017 marked the 20th annual St. Dot’s Challenge including a 5K run, one-mile family walk and a kid’s race.

It takes many months of preparation each year to make the event happen. An eight-member committee of parishioners must secure township permits, find race sponsors, organize volunteers, secure

race timers, register participants and promote the event through websites, parish bulletins, social media and local news outlets.

They also have to order race day T-shirts for all runners and trophies for the winners in several categories. As a safety precaution, police and EMTs must be on duty during the run and walk.

“Thanks to the efforts of those who organized the event in the past and with their continued help, putting this year’s event together was fairly stress free,” said committee member Rob Liberatore. “It eases our minds. It keeps the runners safe.”

The goal for the event is to generate $10,000 to $15,000 for St. Dorothy’s. The funds are used to assist with proceeds for programs including Family to Family, Aid for Friends, the school’s athletic association and tuition assistance.

“I grew up in this parish,” said state Rep. Jamie Santora. “It means the world to help with this event that supports worthy causes. It brings the community together.”

Among those running the 5K was John Pickhaver Jr., 27, of Drexel Hill who represented the United States in the Los Angeles Marathon this past March. He came in 10th overall in that marathon with a time of 2:23:27. Pickhaver continued his momentum in the St. Dot’s Challenge and prevailed as the overall winner in 15:58.

The day always stands out for the Pickhaver family as the late John Pickhaver Sr. founded the event 20 years ago along with parishioner Jim McGowan. Pickhaver’s wife, Nancy, and daughters

Kelly, Caitlin and Julie along with John Jr. come every year. The family now has a grandchild and another one on the way, which makes this a three-generation tradition. “It feels great,” Nancy said. “Everyone does a great job.”

Sarah Hayes, 18, placed first among the female participants in 21:06. A senior at Cardinal O’Hara High School who graduated from St. Dorothy School in 2013, Hayes is a five-sport athlete including track and cross-country. “It’s humbling to give back to St. Dot’s,” said Hayes. “It’s nice to be around the St. Dot’s family.”

There were age group winners as well. Coming in first for the 14 and under category was 11-year old Maura Brady (24:06), a now seventh grader at St. Dot’s who ran the race for the second time.

“It felt difficult,” said Brady. “I was trying to keep up with my sister. It felt awesome.”

This marked school parent Maggie Purcell’s fourth time participating in the challenge and she surprised herself by prevailing in her age group with a time of in 28:05. “I love participating,” she said. “It’s a great turnout.”

With a wonderful group of loyal volunteers, St. Dorothy’s hopes to continue this tradition in the years and decades to come. “We hope it goes for another 20 to 25 years,” said Liberatore.

It can be a big step to leave home and head to college, but first-year college students get a boost from St. Dorothy Parish as they embark on their new paths. For the fifth year, the Family to Family Ministry will be sending care packages to them at school, and our students preparing for sacraments play an important part by contributing cards and letters. One of our longtime parishioners, Joanne Montie, came up with this idea and started the effort, and Mary Porth has continued this terrific project.

Along with Dot’s memorabilia, religious items (such as rosaries made by a parishioner), candy, and home-baked cookies, the care packages contain the good wishes and prayers of our school students. In the fall, our sixth graders preparing for Confirmation reach out with heartfelt (and humorous) messages.

In the spring, our second graders who are preparing for First Eucharist send colorful cards filled with rainbows and sunshine and sports motifs, exhorting the college students to finish strong and get

100s in all their exams (along with the occasional question about if the host really tastes like cardboard).

Our pastor, Fr. Murphy, sums up what is at the heart of this little effort when he assures the students of his prayers, and shares his

hope that wherever they are attending school and wherever they travel they will always consider St. Dorothy their home. Fr. Murphy not only provides his spiritual support, but he also makes this act of ministry possible by funding the mailing of all the packages.

This service project helps our parish school students as they take the next steps toward becoming the people God intends them to be, and it is a reminder to the college students that

their parish family remembers them as they, too, grow into Catholic adults. It is the type of activity that strengthens relationships within St. Dot’s and contributes to the warm connected parish community we all treasure.

Parents of college-age alumni: Please check out the parish bulletin each fall for information about registering your college students.

Last spring, the students of St. Dorothy School presented the musical version of Roald Dahl’s classic James and the Giant Peach. Right before our eyes, the students re-created Painswick Orphanage, the boardwalk of Dover, and New York City as they told the slightly strange story of James and his insect companions and their wild ride across the Atlantic Ocean in a giant peach. Under the direction of Suzanne Bruce, our students put on a fantastic and fantastical show!

...the Student Council for the 2017-2018 school year! (from left: Kenny Bruce, Danielle Furey, Bridget McGuinn, Lyna Ngo, Megan Rayner)

We all know how much St. Dorothy teachers love their students. They show us every day when they come in early or stay late to help a student who is struggling with an assignment, when they promptly return a parent’s call or email, when they attend sporting events, plays, and birthday parties, and even when they greet students warmly at the pool or when they are out running errands. St. Dorothy is blessed to have such dedicated and loving teachers.

Catholic school teachers must cope with the same frustrations all teachers do… a challenging student, an overly passionate parent, all of which our wonderful teachers take in stride. But, it takes even more dedication for a person to teach in a Catholic school. There is a deeper calling involved in teaching at a Catholic school. Our teachers are required to educate not only the minds of our children but also their spirits. They are the examples of faith, hope, and love that our children spend most of their day with, and it is these teachers who nourish our children’s souls.

Our teachers love our school and its students, and the St. Dorothy community loves them back! We show our appreciation to

them in many ways. At the beginning of the school year, the Home & School Association provides teachers with a stipend to help them set up their classrooms. Through the Annual Book Fair, parents can donate books to classroom libraries.

In addition to the many things the St. Dot’s community does for our children’s classrooms, we also take care of our teachers themselves. Parents have the opportunity to donate to the Sunshine fund. This fund is collected in each homeroom and is used for classroom parties and special events, including recognition of the teacher’s birthday and other milestones. For example, classes have been known to host bridal and baby showers. At Christmas, families have the option to contribute to the Christmas Elves fund to provide faculty and staff holiday bonuses. During Catholic Schools Week, teachers are treated to breakfast on Teacher Appreciation Day. Sometimes there are breakfasts or lunches for other occasions, too.

It is only fair that we give back to the teachers who give so much to our school. We are both grateful and fortunate to have them as part of our St. Dot’s community!

Alumni UpdatesSt. Dorothy School wants to know what

our alumni have been up to. Let us know at [email protected].

The Class of ‘67 celebrated their 50-year reunion at Anthony’s Ristorante.

Matt Short (’00) is teaching English in Japan. This picture was taken at the Shirayama Shrine in Fujikawa Town, Yamanashi prefecture. The shrine’s name means White Mountain. Matt says he can see Mount Fuji from his apartment. He also says that the middle school where he is teaching reminds him of St. Dot’s because it is small and welcoming.

Class of ‘67

After attending St. Dorothy and Cardinal O’Hara, Terri received her undergraduate degree from Villanova University in Elementary and Special Education. She continued her education by earning a graduate degree in Educational Leadership and Superintendent Letter of Eligibility from St. Joseph’s University. She has experience as a special education and pupil services administrator in the West Chester, Upper Merion, and Penn Delco School Districts and

is now employed at the Delaware County Intermediate Unit as the Director of Special Programs.

Terri credits the positive experiences, close friendships, and great teachers she had at St. Dot’s as having laid the foundation for her career path in education. Her friendships from her “Dot’s Days” are still strong, and she says she is so blessed to be part of such a strong community of friends and family even 30 years later (almost!)!

If your adult child no longer lives in your house, please send their name and current address to us at [email protected]. We will update their contact information in our database so that we can send newsletters and other communications directly to their home. Thank you!

After graduating from St. Dorothy’s in 1989, Steve and his family moved to Mechanicsburg, PA. He returned to the area for college and graduated from Villanova University in 1997 with a Communications degree. After completing graduate studies at Old Dominion University, Steve worked for both the Atlantic 10 and Skyline Conferences in Athletic Administration. Since 2015, he has served as the Executive Director of Athletics for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. Steve and his wife, Kim, reside in Plymouth Meeting with their daughter, Lyla, who was born in February.

Steve feels that he was very fortunate to attend St. Dorothy’s and grow up with so many wonderful and talented classmates. At the class reunions over the years, he said that he was not surprised to discover how successful they had become. Steve said that he would feel incredibly lucky if his daughter has the same connection to her grade school that he has with St. Dorothy’s.

If you could help reduce tuition for families sending their children to a Catholic school, would you do it?

Pennsylvania offers educational tax credits known as the Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) and the Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit (OSTC). The EITC programs allow individuals and business owners to redirect tax dollars to a Catholic school of their choice. They offer a PA tax credit of 75% for a one-year commitment and a 90% tax credit for a two-year commitment. The OSTC program provides tuition assistance to eligible students residing within the boundaries of a low-achieving school.

Special Purpose Entities (SPE) were created by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to allow individuals and/or business owners to participate in these tax credit programs. Simply review your PA-40 tax form to understand your current tax liability. The amount on line 12 represents the tax dollars you can redirect to the Foundation for Catholic Education to support the SPE for 2018-2019. Please note, certain income does not qualify as individual income if the tax payer is working for a non-profit. However, that income may qualify if the tax payer is married and files jointly with a spouse who does not work for a non-profit.

Determine the amount you would like to redirect through this program. To maximize funds for the program, a target range of 75% of the amount on line 12 is suggested. For example, 75% of $1,500 equates to $1,125 redirected to SPE 2018-19. Review the SPE Operating Agreement & Disclosure documents, then sign the Commitment to Contribute form and return it to Kelly Gust, Advancement Director at St. Dorothy School by June 1, 2019 or directly to Judi Neeld at the Foundation for Catholic Education. No payment is required until the tax credit is approved by the state. Approvals generally occur around November, and the Foundation will notify members of the SPE once approval is received. Forms can be found under Alumni/Support on our school website www.saintdorothy.org.

St. Dorothy School will be hosting an information session on Thursday, January 11, 2018, at 7:00 PM in the school gym. Please check our school website for any updates or changes. For further information regarding either of these programs, please contact Kelly at [email protected] or Judi at [email protected].

Please consider supporting the Foundation for Catholic Education and St. Dorothy School through EITC contributions in 2018 and beyond!

A long-standing sports tradition at St. Dorothy’s has been the annual Turkey Bowl game against St. Bernadette’s. The football game has been played on Thanksgiving for almost the past 60 years and is so well attended that it is a reunion of sorts for alumni of all ages. As we look forward to the new memories to be made at Turkey Bowl 2018, here are some photos, articles, and game for all to enjoy...

TB Box Scores A little Thanksgiving appetizer

This article is from the 1960 game -- the first time St. Dorothy’s defeated St. Bernadette’s in the Turkey Bowl!

This article in 2005 looks back at the first 47 years of this Thanksgiving event.

The Pillars (i.e., Principals) of St. Dorothy SchoolWith the welcoming of Mrs. Tomasetti to our school,

we thought it would be nice to take a look back at some of the past Principals of St. Dorothy School.

Mother M. Kathleen, I.H.M. was St. Dorothy School’s First Principal in 1949

Sister Thomas Maureen, I.H.M. was Principal from 1978 through 1981

Sister Marie Honora, I.H.M. was Principal from 1981 through 1986

Sister Claire Kelly, I.H.M. was Principal from 1992 through 1994

Sister Maureen Catherine, I.H.M. was Principal from 1994 through 1997

Sister Maureen Murray, R.S.M. was Principal from 1997 through 1998

And, the pillar we just said goodbye to this past year, Mrs. Louise Sheehan was Principal from 1998 through 2017
