September 24 & 25, 2016 / 24 & 25 de septiembre, 2016Twenty Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

A NOTE FROM OUR PASTOR

NOTAS DEL PÁRROCO

Dear parishioners,With this Sunday we close the month of September, which is

dedicated to the Holy Cross. This month has been a time of ex-traordinary grace for our parish and myself. I began my term of service as your pastor and as we come to know one another, our parish has found new energy and vitality. The month of October is dedicated to the Holy Angels. At the end of the announcements, which are read before Holy Mass, I have added an indulgenced aspiration to prepare us for the liturgy. October will also be a time of grace for our parish as we celebrate the Sacrament of Confir-mation on October 23. Auxiliary Bishop Daniel Garcia will come to our parish to confer the Sacrament upon 89 candidates. These young people have prepared through years of religious instruction and prayer to fervently receive the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. The Sacrament of Confirmation completes the graces received in the Sacrament of Baptism. And, once confirmed, these young people are fully initiated into the Catholic Church. Let us assist them in their journey to this Sacrament by our prayers…

Come, Holy Spirit, enlighten our minds, cleanse our hearts and give us strength to such a degree that we may clearly recognize the value of our soul. Help us that we may love God above all things and, for love of him, to love our neighbor. May we be free of fear in professing our faith publicly and may we accept all things from the hand of the Lord with all confidence that he will turn them into good for those who lovingly tend towards him. Amen.

Father David.

Padre David.

Becoming Catholic

Are you, or do you know anyone, who has not yet been baptized or was baptized in another Christian faith? Ever wondered why Catholics bless themselves with the sign of the cross, what they believe about communion, what’s up with all those saints and statues, and rosaries, and standing, sitting and kneeling? Why does Mary seem so important? Well, why not come and see and come and learn?

This year’s RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) Program begins on Thursday, September 8. There’s no cost, no obligation, no commitment necessary. In a series of friendly, informative and spiritu-ally exciting classes we will explore the major things Catholics believe and why. We will learn more about the Mass and what is happening and why. Learn about prayer, scripture, sacraments and Church his-tory, and much more.

Are you Catholic and interested in learning more about your faith? Would you be willing to be part of this program to be part of a faith community willing to journey with and support those interested in learning more about our faith? Now may be the moment that God is calling you to be part of an exciting ministry.

So, if you are currently a non-Catholic wanting to learn more about Catholicism, or a Catholic willing to be part of an exciting ministry, please call Sandy Dodson at (512) 213-4554 or Deacon John Kerrigan at (214) 886-8239. You may also email Deacon John at [email protected].

God may be calling you. Listen, pray and come and see….

THE SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SANTA CRUZ PARISH CONFERENCE

The members of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Santa Cruz Conference greatly appreciate the generosity of our parishioners for their financial support and prayers. We are now planning for our annual Angel Tree Project. As you are aware each Christmas Season we hold an event for the children of families in need in our community. The families are chosen from those we serve during the year. However, if you know of a family in need in our parish, encourage them to contact us at (512) 415-4012.

As in the past, we will be sending letters to the families inviting them to respond to our invitation to a Saturday morning breakfast program that will include children making gifts for the Baby Jesus, singing, good food, a birthday cake for the Baby Jesus, fellowship, and gifts for the children. The weekend after

Thanksgiving we will set up the Angel Tree in the church Nar-thex, decorated with angel tree tags representing boys and girls, along with tags for their families. The tree will be stocked with tags for all four weekend masses. Past history tells us the tags will all be selected that weekend.

We ask that you pray for the success of this project to bring the spirit and joy of Christmas not only to those in need but also to all parishioners through their reaching out to help others. What a blessing!

Jubilee Year of Mercy

September 25, 2016Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary TimeJubilee for Catechists

Amos castigates reli-gious people who, “com-fortably complacent” (6:1, 5), ignore the unfolding collapse of culture, nation, religion (6:6). In Jesus’ parable, such complacency becomes the rich man’s undoing. He neither hurt nor harmed Lazarus, nei-ther denied him leftovers nor ordered him removed. That is Jesus’ devastating point. The rich man did nothing wrong to Lazarus; he just did nothing at all good for him. Only in death, separated by “a great chasm” (Luke 16:26), could the rich man finally see Lazarus, whom he had failed to see in life, right before his eyes. Like the rich man’s “five brothers still in my father’s house” (16:27–28), we who are alive in the Church still have time to see that same Someone, Jesus, lying neglected right at our door—and time to do something. Who, specifically, concretely, practi-cally, is Lazarus in my life? What can I do for that Jesus-in-the-flesh during this Jubilee Year of Mercy?
