WELCOME TO OUR 2020-2021 SCHOOL SESSION
28 Years of Quality Christ-Centered Schooling!
Welcome to all of our new families and welcome back to our returning families! We are gearing up for our 29th year of offering quality Christian schooling in the Shenandoah Valley! We are eager to have our students back on campus in a safe environment for 5 days per week of in person instruction!
The energy is building among our faculty members for the start of the year and
we look forward to our Meet the Teacher and Orientation Night where we can
share together as the MVCA school family. We are welcoming many new families,
several new faculty members, and of course, many new and updated policies and
procedures to ensure that we are all on the same page with our Conqueror
Reopening Plan. Mark your calendars for Monday, August 17, from 6:30 – 8:30
p.m. Here is what to expect:
6:30-7:00 pm – All families and faculty will meet in the auditorium for our MVCA
Back to School traditions and to learn what’s new for the 2020-21 school year.
Please be prompt so as not to miss a thing. Also please follow all social distancing
measures by using the hand sanitizing stations, wearing face coverings, and sitting
in the designated areas that will ensure safe physical distancing in our large
auditorium!
7:00-7:30 pm – New families will remain in the auditorium for additional
information to help with a smooth transition to MVCA. Mrs. Morgan will take the
kindergarteners to allow parents to hear needed information. Returning families
will go at this time to the classrooms to meet with the teachers and pick up
classroom schedules and information. Secondary students will also get locker
assignments.
7:30-8:00 pm – New families will go to the classrooms to meet with the teachers
and pick up classroom schedules and information. New secondary students will
get their locker assignments. Returning families will go to the gymnasium where
there will be a Resource Fair with information and sign up tables for everything
from PTF to Sports to Clubs to PE uniforms for purchase. Please go around, ask
questions, and find ways to get involved. Administration and PTF members and
SGO officers will be available to answer questions. Prepackaged snacks will also
be served.
8:00-8:30 pm – New families will have the opportunity to explore the Resource
Fair. Returning families are asked to be conscientious and make room in the gym
for the new families.
We look forward to seeing all of you there!

Conqueror Reopening Plan
With much prayer and research and under the direction of the Governor and the Virginia Educational Task Force, we are thrilled to have a plan to reopen which will allow our staff and students to return 5 days a week to in person instruction beginning on Aug 19, 2020. We are committed to ensure our student and staff constituency’s safety by adhering to the local, state, and federal guidelines outlined with commitment, compliance, and consistency. Here are a few commonly asked questions.
How many can we facilitate?
We have set up our rooms and have our desks spaced according to social distancing guidelines established by the governing authorities. Most of the classrooms can safely facilitate 12 -16 students, a couple can handle more and that is where we will put our largest classes. We will uphold these numbers in order to be within the guidelines for safety!
What is the Reopening Plan?
The link with the full written plan is here. We offered a live parent training on this plan on June 29. Here is the link to watch that training. All parents must sign the document acknowledging that you have watched the video, read the plan, and agree to follow the guidelines. https://www.facebook.com/mountainviewchristianacademy/videos/1149865785398195/?t=326
What happens if Virginia doesn’t stay in Phase III?
We are of course prayerful that our state will continue
to be open safely and that we will be in school all year.
Our Reopening Plan also outlines the guidelines for
Phase I and II should we need it, but again, please join
us in prayer that we will not. Our teachers are
committed to ensuring that your children are taught
by them as degreed teachers in the classroom and
should students need to be out of the classroom
either individually for a period of time or collectively,
we will continue quality live instruction via zoom or
video, tutoring, consultation, etc.
Also K-3rd grade and SPED are allowed to stay in
session during Phase II.
Our Incredible Faculty Team for the 2020-2021 School Year
We are blessed with a diverse faculty in age, education, experience, and personality that have come together with their strengths to create a qualified and competent team. We have a history of longevity with faculty and a very positive rapport exists among our staff. We are eager to welcome some new faces to the team for the 2020-2021 school year.
As Lindsey Sederstrom will be moving to teach 4th grade this year and Jennifer
Lynch to serve as part time music instructor, we welcome Jeanna Wren and
Melanie Jackson to teach 5th and 6th grades. Neither of these women are
strangers to MVCA. Jeanna has served as a substitute and an active parent for 3
years prior to teaching in the public sector for a year. Melanie also served as a
substitute, part time PE and Recess instructor, and active parent before moving to
New Mexico to serve alongside of her husband as house parents at a boys’ home.
Both women have experience teaching the grades they are tasked to teach this
year and we are thrilled to welcome them to these full time roles.
Carla Dhom will be pursuing a counseling career and will be sorely missed
(although she will be active in our Booster club), but we are eager to welcome Dr.
Melinda Donnelly and Jamin Gibson to our staff. Dr. Melinda, a practicing
chiropractor, will be spending her Tuesdays and Thursdays with us teaching high
school science classes. Jamin Gibson will be doing what he was trained to do –
teach – while bringing his life experience to our middle school science and math
and secondary boys health and PE classrooms. Both individuals bring a zest for life
and a passion for students that will enhance our students’ learning experience.
Our prayers go with Cindy Hollenden who has moved out of state to be with
family, yet we acknowledge God’s provision as we welcome Ena Cairns to the role
of Learning Center Coordinator and Instructor. Ena’s master’s level training in
Special Education and 20 plus years of experience with students of all grades and
various exceptionalities qualifies her to oversee our individualized student
services. Ena is also not a stranger to MVCA as she served as a long term
substitute for us during the 2019-2020 school session.
And last, but certainly not least, we welcome Joy Grey to teach Physical Education
classes. She has told Michael Harbin for years that she wanted his job and as he
takes care of some medical needs, she is eager to get in the gym with our
students. We are happy to welcome her to this role and back as a substitute
teacher after a year of living out of state.
We are so grateful to our Jehovah-Jireh God for meeting the needs of the school
in such a powerful and effective way! He does supply all of our needs according to
His glorious riches in Christ Jesus! (Philippians 4:19)

Some Organizational Policies/Procedures
Dress Code – Our dress code is basically modesty,
decency, and Christian testimony. A full student dress
code can be found in our student code of conduct
handbook. Here are some of the most commonly asked
questions.
Leggings can be worn with tops and dresses that
come to mid-thigh length
Jeans with holes are permitted when the holes are
not excessive and are below mid-thigh
Unnatural hair colors are allowed as tasteful
highlights
Tank tops may be worn with 3 finger width straps; no
undergarments are to be shown
Neckline of clothing must be higher than the crease
of the armpit
Cell Phone/Electronics Policy – The following
modifications were made to our existing electronics
policy which can be found in our student code of conduct
handbook. These apply to 9th-12th grade only. K-8th grade
students are not permitted to use their electronic
devices at school unless designated for a teacher-direct
activity.
High school students may use electronic devices
during breaks – between classes, at lunch, and in parent
pick up
No music/headphones are permitted from the start
of 1st period to the end of last period, except with an ISP
Electronic devices must be off or silenced during all
classes and turned in to the teacher’s “check-in” stations
unless being used for a teacher directed learning activity
Raptor – All visitors will be required to sign in with a
state issued ID when they enter the building through our
new Raptor school security system. This will allow us to
identify anyone who is in the building at all times and
enhance our security of the facility as we strive to
provide a safe and secure environment for our students.
We will also be doing some new procedures for parent
pick up time which will allow us to dismiss elementary
students from their classrooms and secondary students
in a safer manner.
PARTNER WITH US!
Parent Teacher Fellowship (PTF) – We
have the most amazing parent constituency
anywhere! Our PTF has been very
instrumental in so many ways to support our
program.
Plan to stop by the PTF table in the gym at
the Resource Fair on Meet the Teacher Night
to sign up for ways that you can be involved
in your child’s education.
Luci Walker, our president, and Denise
Burgamy, our vice president are eager to
meet you and help you connect.
Contact the MVCA Office if you have
additional questions!
GOD, GRADES, GAME!
Sports – God, Grades, Game! That’s the
motto of our MVCA Conquerors sport teams!
There will be a table set up in the Resource
Fair for signs ups, practice schedules, etc.
Time frames will be a bit different this year
due to COVID, but we plan to offer cross
country, soccer, volleyball, basketball,
cheerleading, baseball, track and field, and flag
football. Everyone can find a way to connect in
our sports program. Students in 5th -12th
grades can play competitively, but there are
some opportunities throughout the year for
younger students to get involved as well.
The 2020-2021 master secondary schedule in the back
to school documents will help secondary students plan
their program of study for next year’s classes.
Block classes will meet on Mondays/Wednesdays and
Tuesdays/Thursdays, with Friday a day when all
classes meet for 30 minutes with chapel and an
elective block in the afternoon.
The required elective classes for each grade are Ethics
for 7th, Current Events for 8th, Communication Skills for
9th, Creative and Research Writing for 10th, Speech and
Junior Thesis for 11th, and Senior Thesis for 12th. These
classes will meet for a half hour during 5th and 6th
periods opposite lunch on Monday and Wednesdays.
Tuesdays and Thursdays will be study hall time. On
Friday, there will be no lunch elective or study hall and
all 7th-12th graders will eat lunch at the same time.
All students who will be taking dual enrollment classes
at Lord Fairfax should do their best to work around
this prepared schedule.

Online Ignitia Program
The Ignitia program is a valuable online
resource that enhances our offerings of
classes, especially in the areas of technology
and career based electives and advanced
placement classes. Ignitia is an independent
study format; it is NOT meant to replace any of
our existing classes that are taught in the
traditional classroom setting. It is designed to
provide opportunities for classes that we are
unable to offer. There are 207 courses at our
disposal, many STEM based classes, and 7
advanced placement offerings. In addition, our
faculty can use the program to create units and
additional activities within the traditional
setting. All of our high school students will
have the opportunity to take an elective class
should they choose and juniors and seniors can
choose AP courses for an opportunity to earn
college credit upon testing at the end of the
course.
Room 1 of the Northwest Campus is set up as a
small computer lab where students can work
independently on the classes. Mr. Bordelon
will generally be in the classroom as the
supervising teacher to oversee the courses.
Secondary students will be
assigned a classroom that will
serve as their home base this year
and teachers will travel to them
to eliminate shared spaces. In
addition, an outdoor area will be
assigned to each grade for lunch
and classes in good weather.

Bible Quiz Program
Come and check out the Bible Bowl program. I am passionate
about this program as it has been very instrumental in the shaping
of my life and both of our girls’ lives. I truly believe there is no
better way to get young people into God’s word and to get God’s
word into young people. This fun, competitive quiz program allows
students the opportunity to excel, hide Scripture in their hearts,
travel locally and regionally (if they choose), and make lasting
Christian friendships. I encourage you just to check it out.
There will be a Kick Off Cookout in the small pavilion on Sunday,
August 30, at 12:30 pm. For more information, see Minta Hardman,
Kelli Hall, Judy or Miami Burkey, or Tammy Frye. There will be a
table at the Resource Fair at Meet the Teacher Night, as well.
Beginner Bowl is for 2nd-5th graders: Bible Bowl is for 6th-12th
graders.
Winning at Winchester/Church of Christ at Mountain View
MVCA operates under the auspices of the Church of Christ at
Mountain View (CCMV). There are activities for all ages at every
Sunday and Wednesday service. We would love to have you come
and worship with us on the mountain. In addition, the children and
youth ministries are very active and both directors are very
involved with our school family and will keep you informed of
activities that are happening.
A big family event that is just around the corner is Winning at
Winchester. Labor Day weekend is a blast at CCMV with outdoor
preaching, concerts, children’s programs, and more! See the
information in the Back to School documents for more information
and mark your calendars now to attend. You will be blessed!
This year we will study through
several of the epistles of Paul and
learn practical Christian ethics.

LOOKING FORWARD TO A GREAT YEAR! Back to School Documents – As is our custom, you are receiving all the information you need about this year’s
school session and more in this mailing. In addition to the newsletter, you will find a back to school packet with
faculty lists, school supply lists, schedules, event calendars, and much, much more! PLEASE print out these
documents, post the calendars or mark the events on your calendars (you can also get an invite to our Google
calendar by contacting the office), and keep this information to be able to go back to over the year to answer
questions that you may have. We have tried to be very thorough and we do our very best to adhere to the dates set
aside so that you can adequately plan ahead of time for all of the special programs, meetings, and events in which you
will want to be involved. We recognize that some events may not be possible due to regulations regarding gatherings,
but we wanted to protect the dates just in case.
Accreditation Visit – We were scheduled for our 4th re-accreditation visit last spring and due to the pandemic had to
reschedule it for the fall. We are excited to be welcoming a team of educators to our campus September 27-29, 2020.
Maintaining our accreditation is yet another way that MVCA strives for excellence. We value the accountability that
comes from having the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) and the Virginia Council for Private
Education oversee our program to ensure that we meet and exceed the standards set for an accredited school.
Final Thoughts – 2020 has certainly not been the year that we had all hoped and dreamed that it would be when we
began a new decade, but what an amazing blessing and privilege it is to see God work through adversity and
difficulties for His glory. We trust His Sovereignty and Goodness and praise Him for leading us as we navigate
uncharted waters. It is my honor to serve alongside of such a dedicated team of leaders, administration, teachers,
support staff, parents to offer a Christ-centered education to the incredible MVCA student body. We truly look
forward to welcoming each of you this fall as we together attempt to bring some sense of normalcy for our school
community.
Thank you for allowing us the awesome privilege of partnering with you in schooling your
amazing children!
