Welcome to Otter Class!
Meeting for parents
17th September 2015
Areas to be covered
• Differences between Year 1 and Year 2• General routines• Homework• Show and Tell • S. A. T. s• Transition to Year 3• Questions and answers
The main differences between Year 1 and Year 2 are . . .
• We continue to build on the knowledge and skills acquired in Reception and Year 1
• Lesson sessions become longer• Less time for free play and showing etc• Greater expectations of the children’s listening
skills and work ethic• Encouragement of greater independence• End of Key Stage 1 Assessment
General Routines• Book bags are to be brought to school daily, and we ask that
parents look through the book bags each day after school and empty out the relevant information (e.g. letters.)
• Please name book bags clearly on outside.Items we would like to see kept in book bags each day are: Reading
record book, all current reading books, green spelling book .)• Water bottles daily – WATER ONLY!!• Coats in school everyday please.• P.E. kits to be in school at all times• Morning routine – Children to put book bags in correct box –
“Change me” if need to change their book.• In class children get out their Busy books for the morning starter.• Registration is at 8.40am• Please encourage your child to say goodbye in the circle on the
playground, and walk in to school themselves.
Homework....
Weekly homework is reading and spelling
Reading – please try to hear you child read as often as possible – little and often is the best way. Even if they are fluent readers, they still need to discuss what they have read to aid comprehension.
Spellings – these will be given out on Mondays, and link with the phonics teaching of the week. The spelling test will be on Friday
Occasionally other homework will be given out; usually research for a topic or work to reinforce a concept that needs more practice.
Showing
• It would be lovely to see anything that your child has found out or made related to the topics we are currently learning about.
However, due to the time constraints in Year 2 we do not have time for showing every day.
Roles and Responsibilities
School Responsibilities
•Cross and Candles
•CD
•Register and clipboards
•Playground Buddies
Class Responsibilities
•Special helpers
•Book monitors
S.A.T.’s• Children are assessed and tracked continually throughout the year just
as they have been all the way through their time at Puttenham so far.
• Sats take place between Easter and May half term, nationally, and involve the children completing tasks and tests.
• This year there have been changes for YR2 assessment which we will talk about nearer the time.
• The children will have the opportunity to experience the lay out of papers during the year so they are used to how the papers are presented and how to carry the tasks and tests out.
• Over the last couple of years less emphasis has been placed on the tests and tasks and teacher assessment is the biggest factor in judging each child’s level.
Thinking about the next school...•Deadline for Surrey applications is 15th January•Private Schools will be different, and often have
an entrance exam.
Transition
• The Final Year at Puttenham. . .
Moving into Year 3!
