• WHP or TEP

– Please ensure that you have already obtained approval under the WHP or TEP PRIOR to your arrival in Singapore . If you have not obtained any approval by the 3rd week of May 10, please do get in touch with your School in NTU or RSO (eapsi-rso@ntu.edu.sg)

– To maximise your 8 week attachment programme at NTU, please do work with your supervisor on a research programme schedule for the 8 week duration

– You may like to schedule a meeting with your supervisor after the end of the three day orientation programme to firm up the details and objectives of your attachment programme

• Equipment or consumables

– We suggest that you inform your supervisors early if you need specific laboratory equipment for your research. This is to allow your supervisor to assign relevant staff to follow up accordingly so that the required equipment or consumables are available upon your arrival

– We also suggest that you ask your supervisor to book you for the earliest laboratory or safety briefing so that you can get started almost immediately upon arrival

These are some mandatory documents you will need to bring along :

Entry to Singapore (for Immigration clearance)- IPA Letter + Annexes- Passport- Letter of Admission

On the 1st day of orientation, RSO would bring students to the NTU International Student Centre (ISC) to be briefed on:- Miscellaneous fees (Payment will be made by NTU)- Collection of WHP or TEP at MOM

ISC will assist the students with online payment for their WHP/TEP application fee, issuance of notification letters and making e-appointment for collection passes.

Students then proceed to MOM for collection of WHP/TEP with the following documents:- IPA Letter- Declaration Form- Notification Letter-WHP Employment Survey Form- Passport- Proof of return ticket

The following fees will be charged upon collection of WHP or TEP:

– Your buddies will accompany you during the first three days of orientation in Singapore and he/she will also be the one who you can help you during your attachment programme

• Your accommodation will on campus from 14 Jun to 10 Aug 10. We will make arrangements for you to check-in during the weekend before 14 Jun 10 (Monday).

• Accommodation will be at Nanyang Heights, NTU on a twin sharing basis. Please refer to the table below.

comes with a common kitchen, living room and 2 attached bathroom to be shared among residents. Students are allowed to do some light cooking. The kitchen comes with microwave oven, hot plate, refrigerator and washing machine. There is no air-conditioning in the room.

• The cost of housing, based on no air-conditioning, is

–$250 per month for twin sharing and

–$350 per month for single room

• ISC requires tenants to pay a one-month deposit during your stay. You will also be required to sign a tenancy agreement for your room

• This one month deposit is refundable

• Please have the one month deposit (in cash) ready on 14 Jun 10

Regarding Singapore

• Singapore is a tropical city state in Southeast Asia. It is still largely an Asian, conservative society

• Singapore is a land of immigrants (still is today). Hence there are many cultural influences from many places like China, Malaysia, Indonesia, India and some Western countries like Britain (Singapore was a former British colony)

• The predominant race is Chinese, followed by Malay, Indians and others

• English is widely spoken in Singapore and is the business language for commerce. Signage in public places are also in English

• Other spoken languages are Mandarin and its dialects (Hokkien, Teochew and Cantonese are the three major Chinese dialects), Malay and Tamil

•82% of Singaporeans or permanent residents stay in public housing. These are mutli-storey, affordable flats of various sizes provided by the government

Weather In SingaporeHere are some quick facts about the climate in Singapore, a tropical haven by the virtue of geography.

1.Temperature ranges between 22 o to 34oC (72o to 93oF)

2.Average humidity ~90% in the morning and ~60% in the afternoon

3.Abundant rainfall throughout the year, with the months of November and December being the monsoon season.

4.Lots of Sun!! Daytime, of about 13 hours, is almost constant throughout the year.

The months of June and July are considered to be the hottest months of the year. However, most indoor facilities throughout Singapore and public transportations are fully air-conditioned and so, you don’t have to worry about the heat.

Regarding Singapore’s universities

• There are three universities in Singapore:

– National University of Singapore

– Nanyang Technological University

–Singapore Management University

•A fourth university, the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SU) will admit its first batch of undergraduates in 2011. SU has MIT and Zhejiang University as key partners.

Regarding YOG

• Singapore will be hosting the inaugural Youth Olympic Games from 14 - 26 Aug this year and the Youth Olympic Village will be in NTU campus. More details of the Youth Olympic Village at this website: http://www.ntu.edu.sg/yov/

Regarding Singapore – recommended “to eat” list

• Durians! The durian is a pungent smelling but sweet tasting fruit that is indigenous to this particular region. The durian is also notorious for its thorny exterior. It’s an experience not to be missed!

• Chilli crab! A dish much loved by Singaporeans and tourists alike. You have to try it to know why it is such a popular dish in Singapore!

• Our coffee and tea culture known as “kopi” and “teh” respectively, and our kaya toast and egg breakfast set.

•Go shopping! It’s a Singaporean pastime and we’ve got 2 new shopping and dining places at the two newly opened integrated resorts: the Marina Bay Sands and the Resort World Sentosa. What’s more? The Great Singapore Sale 2010 is on! From 28 May to 25 Jul 10. Come prepared for bargain hunting!

• There are also museums that you can visit like the Asian Civilisations Museum, Singapore Art Museum, Peranakan Museum etc

The Operating Time for the Shuttle Buses servicing routes A, B and C during vacation are from:-

• Monday to Saturday : 8.00 am to 9.30 am (at 5-min interval)• Monday to Friday : 9.30 am to 9.00 pm (at 20-min interval)• Saturdays : 9.30 am to 2.00 pm (at 20-min interval) During Public Holidays and on Sundays, the Internal Shuttle Buses will not be in operation.

As for the NTU-Pioneer MRT service, the bus service would operate daily from 7.30am to 10.30pm. However the NTU-Pioneer MRT shuttle service would not be operational on public holidays. Transportation Outside Campus• There are two local public transport service buses, namely service numbers 179 and 199 which will take you

from the campus to the nearest regional bus interchange, Boon Lay Interchange.

available there or board the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) service to bring you to your destinations. In case you need directions or advice on which service you should take, there are Passenger Service Staff within the interchange who will be more than glad to assist you.

Transportation Outside Campus (Continued)• If you’re in a hurry or just in need of a hassle-free transport solution, you can always call or flag down a taxi from wherever you are.

Cost of Transportation for MRT Trains and Public Buses Charges for these public transport services vary depending on the mode of transport you’ve chosen. Taking the public buses or MRT

services would require you to pay fares via one of two ways:

Cash transactionBe sure to have some loose change on you when you board the public buses to purchase the tickets. In MRT stations, you can buy your ticket at the Ticketing Machines within the stations itself.

Cost of Transportation for Taxis As for taxis, the mode of transaction widely used is cash. Certain taxi companies however do accept credit cards.

You can always ask the operator when you’re calling for a taxi or just ask the taxi driver before you get into the taxi if credit cards are accepted.

2. Adult Stored Value Card (EZ-Link fare cards)The adult stored value card is a contactless stored value s

smartcard, which can be used on buses, the MRT and LRT.

When you board either public buses or MRTs, all you have to do is tap these specialized cards on the card readers and tap again when you alight. The value on the card will be deducted automatically.

It is a lot more convenient than paying cash each time you board these public transport. And not to mention cheaper too! You can purchase EZ-Link cards at the Passenger Service offices in all MRT stations at S$15 a piece and subsequently top-up your EZ-Link cards at the Ticketing Machines when the credit on your card is running low.

If you are uncertain on how much the Fare is based on the Fare Stages, you can simply tell the Bus Driver your destination and he will tell you how much to pay.

However, if you are using the EZ-Link card, then your bus fare will be automaticallydeducted from your card when you tap your card on the Card Reader before alighting as mentioned in the previous slide.

Transportation Outside Campus (cont’d)Distance FaresFrom 3 July 2010, all commuters will be charged a fare according to the total distance travelled, on the bus, LRT and MRT. The introduction of Distance Fares will bring about a more integrated fare structure that will allow commuters to make transfers without incurring additional cost. With Distance Fares, fares are computed on a journey basis, without a boarding charge being imposed for every transfer tripthat makes up your journey. This way, you can choose the travel option that suits you best.

To fully enjoy the benefits of Distance Fares, remember these points:

– Pay with an EZ-Link card– You may make up to 5 transfers within a single journey, with a 45-minute allowance between each

transfer– You can take up to 2 hours to complete your journey – You can enter and exit the train network only once in a journey and– You should not take the same bus service number more than once in a journey

Getting back to Nanyang HeightsTo get back Nanyang Heights when you travel outside NTU campus, you need to take the public service number 199 from Boon Lay Bus Interchange. Alight at bus stop number 27209, Hall 8 along Nanyang Avenue

Alternatively, you can take bus service 179 from Boon Lay Bus Interchange or Pioneer MRT Station and alight at bus stop 27311 outside HALL 2, Lien Ying Chow Drive.

Banking Facilities In And Near Campus

The only bank on campus is the OCBC bank and if you wish, you can open an account with them.

The following documents are needed to open an account in OCBC:

• Letter of Award (Issued by NSF)• Passport• Minimum amount of S$500 into the new account (Amount varies among different banks)

Note that a S$2 service fee per month is chargeable if the monthly average balance falls

below S$1,000. As such, do remember to bring at least the minimum sum with you should wish to open an account with the OCBC Bank.

However as your stay in Singapore is relatively short, you may like to check with the Customer Service Counter at OCBC which is located just below Lee Wee Nam Library regarding the opening of new accounts in Singapore.

There is however a Citibank ATM located on campus. It is located beside the POSB and UOB ATMs near McDonald’s.

Food Joints Around CampusWithin the campus there is a good number of canteens and eateries for you to frequent for lunch, dinner or when you just need that cup of coffee or snack to keep you going.

Grocery shopping outside campus

• If you’ll like to do your grocery shopping outside campus, you can go to the nearest housing estate at Jurong West Extension (accessible by bus 179) or go to Jurong Point Shopping Centre http://www.jurongpoint.com.sg/

• Jurong Point is a large shopping mall that serves the residents in the western part of Singapore and the nearby industrial estate.

• There are many variety of shops, from sports shops, computer shops, restaurants, food courts, pharmacies to hypermart

• Fairprice Xtra is a hypermart that is open 24 hours and is very popular with all residents in this part of Singapore

After you have arrived….

Matriculation Card And Email AccountsMatriculation Cards or commonly known as Matric Cards will be issued to you by the Graduate Studies Office (GSO).

With this Matric Card, you would have unlimited access to the libraries and other facilities that you can use for both your leisure and for yourresearch.

To collect your Matric Card, you wouldneed to go down to GSO on 14th June 2010during office hours and look for the person-in-charge i.e. Mr Tan Choon Kiat (Tel: 6790 6075)Please remember to bring your passport along as a form of identification.

GSO office hours are from :-• Monday to Thursdays : 8.30 am to 5.45 pm• Fridays : 8.30 am to 5.15 pm

Matriculation Card And Email Accounts (cont’d)In order to login in to the NTU’s wireless network, you need to have a NTU User Name and Password. Your unique user name and password were

sent you earlier via email.

You also need this NTU User Name and Password to access your NTU Emails i.e. yourusername@ntu.edu.sg

For this, Centre for IT Services (CITS) will help you to activate a new account and an email notification regarding the details of the activation of this account will be sent to you.

At The End of The EAPSI Program

At the end of your Research Attachment in NTU, you are required to complete the following:

1. Submit a written report to your Supervisor

2. Prepare a presentation and present your work at the closing ceremony that will be held on 6th August 2010.

• Each Presentation takes about 20 minutes (15 minutes + 5 minutes Q&A)• The presentation should cover mainly your research findings as well as your

experiential stay in Singapore
