What are your career goals?
Career Reality: Sometimes things don’t go as expected.
1) Join 3 professional societies and serve on the student board.2) Join a leadership program. There are many offered through the county/city and institution.3) Learn public speaking both in your discipline and out of your discipline.4) Learn to create a resume, C.V., website, personal mission statement, and leadership philosophy.5) Meet with your advisor twice a month, even if it is a quick check-in.6) Begin to network for employment BEFORE your graduate/finish.
“Advice”…from an NAU PhD in a Teaching Institution
“Advice”…from an NAU PhD in a Small Company
1) Don’t give up on your dreams…even though they will likely change along the way.2) Present as much as you can (poster sessions, departmental seminars).3) Learn appropriate social media. Have a Linked-In page.4) Get your own business cards.5) Use your mentor; it’s their job to help, and they actually want to help.
1) Network a lot. It’s all about who you know.2) Most people want to help others be successful. They will help, if you reach out to them.3) Research the company. Know the culture. Ask people if they are happy; they will typically be honest.4) Make sure your resume is FOR the job you are applying for. A resume for industry is very different than one for an academic position. Be sure to highlight relevant experience only.5) Companies want leadership skills. I mentored 10 undergrads and was the VP of Graduate Student Government…my company loved that!6) I won the 3 MRP at NAU. My company was impressed.
