International System of Units
• The worldwide accepted standard measurement system.
• One basic unit of measurement for each quantity.– meter for length– kilogram for mass– liter for volume– degree Celsius for temperature
• Based on the number 10.

Multiplying by Powers of 10
• 4 * 10 = 40
• 4 * 100 = 400
• 4 * 1,000 = 4,000
• 4 * 10,000 = 40,000

Metric Conversion Examples
• 16 mm = ____ m
• Think: “I’m going from a smaller unit to a larger unit. I’ll have a number that is less.”
• Think: Divide.
• 16 mm = 0.016 m
• 34 kL = _____ daL
• Think: “I’m going from a larger unit to a smaller unit. I’ll have a number that is greater.”
• Think: Multiply.
• 34 KL = 3,400 daL

Metric Conversion Example
• 582 cg = _____ hg
• Think: “I’m going from a smaller unit to a larger unit. I’ll have a number that is less.”
• Think: divide.
• NOTE: It may help to go to the base unit first.
• 582 cg = _____ g
• 582 cg = 5.82 g
• 5.82 g = _____ hg
• 5.82 g = 0.0582 hg

EVERYONE: Convert 67 hm into mm.
• 67 hm = _____ mm
• 67 hm = 6,700 m
• 6,700 m = 6,700,000 mm

Meter or Metre
• Basic unit of length in the metric system.
• Until 1960, it was defined as the length of a platinum bar kept in France.
• Currently it’s definition is based on the speed of light.
• A little longer than 1 yard (3 feet). Used to measure things we measure in yards or feet.
• The kilometer is used to measure lengths we measure in miles. 1 km is approximately 0.6 mile.
• Centimeters/millimeters are used to measure lengths we measure in inches. 2.54 cm is approximately 1 inch.
12
13
Area in the Metric System• Make sure all units are the same before
calculating area.
• The square centimeter replaces the square inch.
• The square meter replaces the square foot and the square yard.
• A hectare is about 2.5 acres. 13
14
A square dam is how many times larger than a square m?
• 1 dam
• 10 m
• 1 dam
• 10 m
• A square dam is a square whose sides are 1 dam long. Since 1 dam equals 10 m, we can replace 1 dam with 10 m.
• The area of the square above is 10 m * 10 m = 100 square meters.
• Therefore the area of 1 square dam is 100 times the area of 1 square m.
14
15
Lydia’s rectangular garden is 3 m by 400 cm.What is the area of Lydia’s garden in meters?
• Convert 400 cm to m.• 400 cm = 4 m
• A = l*w• A = 4 m * 3 m• A = 12 sq. m.
15
EVERYONE: Simon’s rectangular painting is 37 cm by 400 mm.What is the area of Simon’s painting in millimeters?
16
17
EVERYONE: Simon’s rectangular painting is 37 cm by 400 mm.What is the area of Simon’s painting in millimeters?
• 37 cm = _____ mm
• 37 cm = 370 mm
• A = l * w
• A = 400 mm * 370 mm
• A = 148,000 sq mm
17
18
Volume in the Metric System
• Can be expressed in liters (“litres”) or cubic meters.
• A liter is a little larger than a quart. Used in place of pints, quarts, and gallons.
• Milliliters are used to measure very small amounts, like medicine doses.
• Kiloliters and cubic meters are used to measure large amounts.
• 1 cubic meter = 1 kL
18
19
A cylindrical hot-water heater has a radius of 60 cm and a height of 160 cm. What is the capacity, in liters, of the hot-water heater?
• 60 cm = _____ m
• 60 cm = 0.6 m
• 160 cm = _____ m
• 160 cm = 1.6 m
• V = [pi]r2h
• V = 3.14 * 0.62 * 1.6
• V = 1.80864 cubic meters
• 1 cubic meter = 1000 L
• 1.80864 * 1000 = 1808.64 L
19
20
Mass
• Kilogram (kg) is the basic unit. It is about 2.2 pounds.
• The official kg is a cylinder of platinum-iridium alloy kept in Paris.
• The gram is used for small amounts and is used where we would measure in ounces.
• The milligram is used for really small amounts in the medical and scientific fields.
• 1 kg of water has a volume of 1 L.
20
21
Temperature
• Celsius Fahrenheit
• Freezes 0 32
• Body temp 37 98.6
• Boiling 100 212

C to F Conversion
• F = (9/5)C + 32
• Find the F to C Conversion:
• F = (9/5)C + 32
• Subtract 32 from both sides:
• F - 32 = (9/5)C
• Multiply both sides by (5/9):
• (5/9)(F - 32) = C
22
23
67[deg]C = ____[deg]F
• Use F = (9/5)C + 32
• F = (9/5)(67) + 32
• F = 120.6 + 32
• F = 152.6[deg]
23
24
99[deg]F = _____[deg]C
• Use C = (5/9)(F - 32)
• C = (5/9)(99 - 32)
• C = (5/9)(67)
• C = 37.2[deg]
24
25
Unit Fractions
• any fraction in which the numerator and denominator contain different units, but the value is still 1.
• 12 in OR 3 ft OR 1 gallon• 1 ft 1 yd 4 qt
25
26
• 16 pints = _____ quarts
• 16 pints * 1 quart = 8 quarts• 1 2 pints
• 15 days = _____ minutes
• 15 d * 24 hr * 60 min = 21,600 min• 1 1 d 1 hr
26
27
75 L = _____ gal
• Use 1 gal = 3.8 L
• 75 L * 1 gal = 19.7 gal• 1 3.8 L
27
28
88 ft = _____ m
• Use 3 ft = 1 yd and 1 yd = 0.9 m
• 88 ft * 1 yd * 0.9 m = 26.4 m• 1 3 ft 1 yd
