Registration Information

for NEW

MECH Undergrads

The following information will help you plan your fall and winter timetable,

understand how to register for classes using Aurora, and hopefully answer any

other questions about being a student in Mechanical Engineering at the University

of Manitoba!

How to Begin Planning your Timetable:

Step 1: Download the Mechanical Model Program - Students Admitted Fall

2021 (PDF). This document shows the number of courses to completion in the

Mechanical Engineering Program. Also download the Mechanical 5 Year

Program Model A and Model B (Fillable PDF). Check off the courses you have

completed to date and begin your plan. Available forms can be found on the

department website under title “Undergraduate student resources / Mechanical

student advising:

Department webpage here:

The NEW Mechanical Student Advising webpage here:

https://umanitoba.ca/engineering/mechanical/advising

NOTE: Being that most students complete the program in 5+ years Model A or Model B will

work best.

Step 2: Select courses and create a fall and winter timetable. The schedules are up on Aurora and can be printed to PDF. Please keep in mind we are a prerequisite driven program, and the courses are scheduled in the Model Program to ensure fastest time to completion. Students must take a minimum of 9 credit hours per term (any less requires Dept. permission).

Instruction: Log into Aurora, select Class Schedule / Fall 2021 or Winter 2022 / Mechanical Engineering / Leave everything else blank and hit enter. (a listing of all Mechanical courses for that term will populate). Print to PDF.

Additional documents to help:First Year Planning Guide - Pages 5, 6, 7, 8 and 11 (for students new to U of M)Timetable Planning Form - (fillable PDF)Create a study Schedule

Note: It is important to schedule your study time. This is not a program you can cram. Setting yourself up for success early and following your plan will help you achieve the goals you have set for yourself. Remember to include a little me time.

Step 3: Check your initial registration access date and time in Aurora(registration date and time are based on your Degree GPA). Registration for all returning students begins on Thursday July 22nd, 2021.

Check your Registration Date and Time:

• Login to Aurora, then click on the Enrolment & Academic Records tab, then click on Registration & Exams, then click on Registration Time & Status.

• Please check Aurora prior to this to ensure you do not have any holds on your account.

New to the Program Fall 2021

Starting Fall 2021, Mechanical students are required to take at least one of the courses from the list of Indigenous Knowledge courses.

Students admitted to Mechanical Engineering in Fall 2021 who have completed two complementary studies electives (or 6 credit hours) prior to admission in the program, may use one of those courses in place of the Indigenous Knowledge course.

Focus area and minor declaration formDeclaring an Option or Stream requires the submission of this form at the end of your 2nd year of study in Mechanical Engineering. If you are still undecided you may submit later as submission at a later date will not disrupt registration for technical electives. As long as you meet the prerequisite you may register.Mechanical Minor Tracking (Fillable PDF).

Special permission formThe Special Permission form is required to request: prerequisite overrides, timetable conflicts, college restriction overrides, lecture or lab section changes, year class restriction overrides, space requests. Understanding Your Online Transcript

When you log into Aurora to look at your online transcript all the important numbers are at the bottom. The highlights in the samples above are some things to watch for. The easiest way to find if a course is not applied to your degree is through UM Achieve. Once logged in RUN a “Declared Audit”. If a course that should apply is found in Excess at the bottom of the Audit, contact your student advisor to have this corrected. Only a student advisor can fix this.

Find the info. below In Aurora under Enrollment/Academic Record/General Record

Degree GPA info. found at the bottom of your transcript

Term GPA info. found underneath registered courses for the term. Maintain a Term GPA of 2.0 or higher to stay in good Academic standing called “Faculty Minimum Met”. See Academic Progressions in the Online Calendar under Faculty Requirements.

Plagiarism

To plagiarize is to take ideas or words of another person and pass them off as one’s own. In short, it is stealing something intangible rather than an object. Obviously, it is not necessary to state the source of well known or easily verifiable facts, but students are expected to acknowledge the sources of ideas and expressions they use in their written work, whether quoted directly or paraphrased. This applies to diagrams, statistical tables and the like, as well as to written material, and materials or information from Internet sources. To provide adequate documentation is not only an indication of academic honesty but also a courtesy which enables the reader to consult these sources with ease. Failure to do so constitutes plagiarism. It will also be considered plagiarism and/or cheating if a student submits a term paper written in whole or in part by someone other than him/herself or copies the answer or answers of another student in any test, examination, or take-home assignment.

Plagiarism or any other form of cheating in examinations or term tests (e.g., crib notes) is subject to serious academic penalty (e.g. suspension or expulsion from the faculty or university). A student found guilty of contributing to cheating in examinations or term assignments is also subject to serious academic penalty.
