Spent the morning taking readings up at Little Gale weather station. Clear

skies, south-westerly breeze. Slightly cooler than expected but high pressure

looks set to hold for a while.

Note: Two slats have rotted and need replacing on the box.

Headed down to meet Saul and Charlie at the lake house station. Looks like

the hygrometer is on the f ritz again, probably the wiring. Saul’s heading over

to Atsena tomorrow so he’s going to try and grab some solder. I’d rather he

got a guy in to fix it aft er the last time but, as Saul said, money’s tight

and there’s nothing to remind you to disconnect  the mains like a shock to

the system.

Lake Rapture looks beautiful today. I might try and rent the boat house

from the Hendersons next time I get a free weekend.

Miserable day today – everything ’s  grey and dreary. Had coffee with Professor

Toplady this morning to talk over my thesis. Not good. He said I’m going to

have to really pull something out of the bag to make it more distinctive. I

think I need the weather gods to serve me up a miracle. Ho-hum.

At least the sun decided to put in an appearance for the Pensacola town fair

today. The streets are packed and the air is full of tempting BBQ smells.

They just announced the local beauty queen – some skinny blonde with great

teeth and boobs to die for. Co w. Well let’s just hope she slathered on the

sun cream - I’m not sure the sash and crown are going to go with peeling

crimson skin.

Just got a call from Glinda over in New Tupelo. She’s been g etting somereally weird readings - reckons her equipment might be on the blink. I’m going

to head over now to try to re-calibrate. While I’m in town I might casually

swing by the Krakatoa Café and see if Sean is working. It’s been a while…

Update: 19:17pm

Location: New Tupelo

Temp: 16° C

Weather: Heavy Rain (extremely localised)

Beaufort: 5 - 6

Jeez, Glinda wasn’t kidding!  There’s n othing wrong with her equipment, just

some seriously crazy weather going on here. Heavy rain and stiff winds have

just blown up out of nowhere, totally out of kilter with the rest of the

valley. Even stranger, the storm is incredibly localised – it just ends at the

city limits and seems to be just hovering here. I’m going  to stay in town

tonight and keep an eye on it using the portable equipment in the van. This

could be the break I’ve been after for my thesis!

Update: 21:03pm

Holy moly, this is nuts! Just had to come in from the van as it was getting

buffeted so much by the wind – the rain’s coming down in sheets now. I’ve

never seen anything like this in my life.

 2013

Time: 11:28am

Location: New Tupelo

Temp: 15° C

Weather: Storm

Beaufort: 6

Incredibly, the storm is showing no sign of abating. It’s just sitting over New

Tupelo, dumping water. We’re getting some localised flooding down here andthere’s been moderate structural damage reported all over town.

Update: 17:07

Location: Route Zero, heading westward

Beaufort: 6

The storm just started to move, heading out westward following the

approximate direction of the highway. It’s almost like it’s just been waiting

here for something. Very, very odd. Following at a distance in the van.

Update: 19:36

Location: Just east of Pensacola

Beaufort: 7

The storm has stopped again. It’s be sitting just outside of the  Pensacola

city limits on Route Zero. This thing is so compact it’s unreal. The wind

seems to be picking up and there has been some hail and thunder in the last

30 mins or so. It’s been tearing up the countryside and I’ve j ust seen a

police car heading out towards the old Dalton farm. I hope John and his wife

are OK.

Update: 20:06

Location: Just east of Pensacola

Beaufort: Estimated 9 -10 (!!!)

Sweet mercy , I can’t believe what I’m seeing. The storm is whipping itself

into full-blown twister as I watch, doubling, tripling, quadrupling in size and

ferocity. Ringing ahead to see if I can get someone to evacuate the town.

People are going to get hurt.

Oh my god, it’s moving…

Update: 20:27

Location: Pensacola

Beaufort: Estimated 12 [Full hurricane force]

Oh god, oh god, oh god. The town – it completely levelled the town!

Pensacola is just… gone. Flattened. Utterly wiped off the map. Hundreds

must be dead. Thousands maybe. And the storm is still moving, west towards

Atsena…

Oh my god.

Update: 20:50

Location: Atsena

Beaufort: Estimated 12 [Full hurricane force]

Oh lord this is awful. Atsena too – completely destroyed. It looks like n

atomic bomb has gone off. Buildings have been flattened, cars tossed around

like toys. God knows what the body count is going to be.

The storm is still moving west …

Update 21:15Location: Approximately 10 km north of Inwood

Page 8: Welcome to Mahagonny (Sky Arts)

Beaufort: Estimated 12 [Full hurricane force]

The twister has just stopped in the middle of the road. I’m getting as clos e

as I dare in the van but the storm is so unpredictable. This thing is a

monster.

Update 21:19

Location: Approximately 10 km north of Inwood

Beaufort: Estimated 12 [Full hurricane force]

I must be losing it. I swear to god I’m seeing things now. I think t here’ssomeone standing at the centre of the twister, right in the eye. I keep

seeing snatches of him illuminated by the lightning before the dust cloud

swallows him up again. He’s just standing there. I think he’s watching me.

Update 21:26

Location: Approximately 10 km north of Inwood

Beaufort: 12 [Full hurricane force]

The storm changed course! The whole thing just suddenly veered of north

towards Castle Rock at almost a 90 degree angle. This is utterly impossible! I

tried to follow but the storm took out the bridge. I’m heading back to see if

there is anything I can do for the injured in Atsena. This is proving to be

simultaneously the strangest, most thrilling and most upsetting day of my

whole life.

 2013

Time: 11:28am

Location: Inwood

Temp: 24° C

Weather: Fair

Beaufort: 2

It has now been over a week since the catastrophic hurricane-force event that

tore through our sleepy little county. In the course of one night, two entire

towns, Pensacola and Atsena, were completely destroyed and several more

suffered significant damage. The death toll is in the thousands with manyhundreds more injured. The damage has been estimated in the tens of

millions.

Though it is almost impossible to divorce the human cost from this awful

tragedy, the meteorological mechanics behind this are simply staggering. Not

only in terms of the stor m’s ferocity and speed, but in its very formation

which seemed to defy every known law of physics.

But the oddest thing of all was its direction. Plotting the course of the

storm on a map, it seemed to run ruler-straight until it simply stopped

north of Inwood . It then proceed e

to arc around an area of open country

almost like it was trying to avoid something before continuing again on its

original trajectory. Neither myself or my colleagues can find any feasible

explanations for this.

On a personal level I have been left deeply traumatised by the events and

have been suffering intense headaches and vivid, violent dreams.

Dreams involving a dark figure walking in the eye of the storm.

He was there again in my dreams last night. It’s getting to be so intense and

unnerving that I’m afraid to go to sleep. The pills from Dr. Leary only seem

to make it worse.

I awoke with his face burned so vividly into my mind that I was even able to

sketch him.

I can still see his creepy eyes seared into my retinas.
