Supplies Needed• A large backpack• A paint shirt, labeled, in a gallon ziploc baggie in the

backpack all year long• A gallon baggie labeled with your child’s name and Room

1 (this is used for the word bag)• A plastic pencil box & 1 dry erase marker• A folder with pockets

I will provide pencils, markers, scissors, and glue sticks. Keep extra at home for completion of homework. PLEASE USE A PENCIL!

Arrival

AM Session All students should arrive by 8:30am. Class begins at 8:40am. All students are consider tardy after 8:40am.

PM Session Students will enter the classroom through the Kindergarten doors from 12:30-12:40pm. Class begins at 12:40pm.

If students arrive after start time, please take them to the office and request a tardy pass.

I will ask the kids to take their take-home folder out of their backpacks and open them. Together, we will check for notes from home and homework. It is my goal for your child to develop the responsibility of submitting information to me without prompts within a month or so.

Dismissal

AM Session 11:15-11:25am in the front of the Middle School. Please remember to put your car sign in the right corner of the windshield. After 11:30, child will wait in elementary office.

PM Session 3:10pm walkers/busses

Please contact the office with any bus questions.

Daily Warm-upDuring this time the children all join together in:• Singing a patriotic song• Reciting the Pledge of Allegiance• Learning to recite and read the days of the week

and months of the year• Understanding the calendar• Counting the days of school• Using tally marks• Counting by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s• Making equations (addition and subtraction)• Reviewing letter recognition and sounds• Telling time to the hour• Identifying and counting coins• Daily Message

Language ArtsFocus is on letters, letter sounds, and using these sounds to produce words. We use the Board approved reading curriculum as well as thematic units to enrich the students’ learning.

WORKSHEETS will be completed in class and as homework to provide practice of learned concept. Worksheets will not be graded.

WORD CARDS will be handed out periodically. Cards kept in Ziploc quart baggie. Please keep words and word bag in your child’s SPECIAL folder and practice daily. WILL NEED BAGGIE ASAP

WORD FAMILY LISTS (such as ‘at’ and ‘an’ words) will be introduced during the latter part of the year. Please keep all lists in your child’s SPECIAL folder and continue to practice.

REPRODUCED BOOKS for practice reading. Please have your child read the book to you and return the following day.

Writing

Peterson Company alphabet (see handout) Shows formation of CAPITAL and lowercase letters.

Pencil Grip is important. Leads to neatness and correct letter formation. Please monitor your child as he/she prints. Stop and correct immediately. The pointer finger should be on top of pencil and no letters should begin on the bottom line.

Math

Utilize manipulatives to introduce concepts and worksheets for reinforcement.

Some of the concepts covered:• Sorting, Graphing, and Patterns• Shapes• Numbers to 31 (Read and write)• Skip Counting and Counting to 100• Time (to the ½ hour) and Money• Measurement• Readiness for Addition and Subtraction

Social SciencesScience Curriculum (Asset Kits)Push, Pull and Go My Senses

Social Studies Curriculum (Thematic Units)Ex: community helpers, school workers, stranger danger, identifying land and water on a map/globe, natural resources, the making of America, historical figures, and holidays.

Health CurriculumEx: cleanliness, safety, nutrition, dental hygiene, feelings, and self-esteem.

Homework

• Given to reinforce skills.

• If a paper comes home with an ‘H’ circled this means it is homework and is due the following day of school.

• Important skills teach your child to review his/her work, correct errors or messy letters/numbers, and to return the homework to the take-home folder.

Specials• Library Students go on every Day 2. Please

keep the book in your child’s backpack when not being read. Inside pocket of book will be a card listing the due date.

• Computer Students go on every Day 4. Skills such as mouse control, keyboarding, accessing learning websites will enrich language arts and math curriculum.

• C.A.R.E: Grouping for enrichment and remediation.

• Olweus: Anti-bully program.

Discipline

• Super Listener Daily Reward (Refer to orientation packet)

• No behavior should interfere with another child’s ability to learn.

Snack

School District Food Policy- No snack to be brought by students. I will provide a snack occasionally when time permits.

•Water bottles permitted—spill proof cap, please (containing only water)

Recess

Outside/playground recess, weather permitting, will provide time for large motor skill development and social interaction on the outside playground.

Indoor recess will promote problem solving and socialization skills.

Birthday Celebrations

• All birthdays, including summer children, will be celebrated throughout the year. I will make a special hat and provide that child with opportunities to feel special throughout the day. Please do not send in treat bags or goodies for the children.
