Welcome to Jessie Clark Middle School’s second annual Family Literacy Night
where we are LEARNING THE VALUE OF LITERACY !
We are so excited to have students and families join us this evening for fun and educational activities
related to a variety of literacy skills. We hope you learn and grow in your understanding and
appreciation for literacy across content areas. Please review the information below to get the most
out of this event and THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
Brochure and Envelope
These items will be used throughout the evening as you visit each booth or classroom. The brochure
will give you information about the teacher and community activities. After participating in each
activity, you will earn Literacy Loot that can be used for prizes, raffles, and school rewards.
Literacy Loot
Literacy Loot can be spent in the following ways:
Spend it! Go to the Literacy Bank to buy small prizes like candies, pens/pencils/markers,
notepads, stickers, and community coupons.
Take a chance! Fill out the information on the back of the Literacy Loot ticket and drop it
in a raffle bag for a teacher’s favorite book or for the larger prizes displayed in the front
hall.
Save it! Collect five tickets to redeem in class for school rewards like extra credit, homework and hall passes, dress down days, and free athletic admission (see disclaimer
on the back of each Literacy Loot ticket).
Food
Each member of your family will receive a meal – hot dog, chips, carrots, and a drink – for attending
this event. Please have your hand stamped, gather your food, and eat at the tables provided near
the gym when you are ready to eat. No foods or drinks should be taken out of that area.
We greatly appreciate the donations from school and community sponsors for
helping make our Family Literacy Night a success!
Books as Bridges
Books as Bridges will be included in Literacy
Night by representing our partner countries
to help culturally educate students, while
encouraging them to read. Participating in
the JCMS Literacy Night also brings
awareness of the International Book Project
and our cause and gives us a chance to give
back to our local community.
Carnegie Center The Carnegie Center for Literacy and Learning: Where Learning Lives
The Carnegie Center is a non-profit family learning center devoted to
helping all citizens improve their quality of life. Our open-door policy invites
people young and old to learn something new. We offer seasonal classes in
Writing, Computer Literacy, graphic design, and Language; tutoring for
students grades K-12; vibrant youth and family programs and exhibits,
readings, and other arts-related events designed to encourage among
Central Kentuckians an appreciation for all art forms and for learning in
general.
Many classes and events at the Carnegie Center are free, and wherever
low-cost registration fees are required, scholarships are available to help
those in need. The Carnegie Center has long been a haven for writers, and we
have built on that tradition to become a home to diverse groups of people
who love to read, to discuss, to explore, to play, to create, and to learn.
There’s something for everyone at the Carnegie Center, where learning lives.
Please stop by and visit the Carnegie Center booth! All visitors will be
encouraged to add a sentence or two to an unfolding short story written right
there at JCMS by JCMS students and parents. There will also be goodies and
more information available about fun summer classes and camps for middle
school students. Looking forward to seeing you there!
Love on a Leash
Read to a Therapy Animal
According to studies performed by researchers at Tufts University…
“Pets can be considered a source of support”
“Human-animal interaction can make the learning process more
comfortable and enjoyable for children”
Love On A Leash is a non-profit organization which dedicates itself to
reaching out to the community through therapy animals to brighten
someone’s day. For the most part, our therapy pets are dogs; however, occasionally we have certified cats and rabbits who have
shown that they like people and have the temperament to work with
them. Therapy pets and their owners visit nursing homes, hospitals,
and schools to provide emotional support. They put a smile on
someone’s face, make their day a little brighter, or bring back a cherished memory.

Charge Your Brain
Compass Learning
Put an end to Brain Drain!
Summer brain drain is a real concern for teachers and parents.
Students who are not actively engaged in some form of academic
activity during summer can lose up to two months of knowledge. The
good news us that it can be prevented. (Gundlach, Marlene, 2011)
JCMS recognized the impact this can have and responded by
purchasing a research-based program. Compass Learning Odyssey®
enables us to meet the needs of our struggling students, as well as
accelerate the rate of learning for our advanced students.
Encourage your child to keep their brain charged this summer by
getting on Compass Learning Odyssey® and working within his or her
Language Arts or Math folders at least one hour each week.
Maps From Books Where Location is Everything!
Do you love maps? Moreover, do you love
maps from novels? Sometimes authors include
maps in their novels to help readers visualize
multiple story settings. Test your geography
skills and your knowledge about story
setting! See if you can guess the correct novel
titles by examining detailed maps from various
novels! Cities, countries, physical features are
all important details in stories!
Rhyming & Rapping
Rhyming,
it’s in poetry and music hooks,
as well as Dr. Seuss books … but not always as easy as it looks.
In the rap-rhyme room
words will zoom; as we lower the boom
and let our creativity bloom. Lyrics and verses will be dropping like rain;
for self-expression and to entertain!
Memory Game
with Parts of Speech
Come test out your knowledge of
the different parts of speech in this
fun, interactive game of Memory.

vocabulary? Students and families
can display their knowledge of
literary terms on the JCMS Alpha
Wall.

Digital Literacy
The Digital Literacy sessions will provide parents and students with an overview of the online ILP (Individual
Learning Plan) that all middle and high school
students are required to update annually. Parents
and students will learn more about ILP features that
help students and their families make plans for future education and training and focus attention on
career exploration. Parents and students will be able
to explore ILP activities, career information, and ask
questions.
