THE HORIZONS PROGRAM...

Operates under the state and county guidelines to identify and meet the needs of students who are intellectually and creatively

gifted.Is a resource for ALL teachers and staff who

work with these students on a daily basis.Strives to encourage higher levels of thinking

and performance for ALL students.

HORIZONS STANDARDS1. Gifted students will develop advanced research skills and methods.

2. Gifted students will develop and practice

creative thinking and creative problem-

solving skills with a variety of complex topics

within the area of study.

3. Gifted students will develop and practice

critical thinking skills in the pertinent academic

area.

HORIZONS STANDARDS4. Gifted students will develop and practice logical problem solving skills in the pertinent academic area.

5. Gifted students will develop advanced

communication skills.

6. Gifted students will develop an

understanding of self and how their unique

characteristics may influence interactions with

others.

Horizons students will monitor their own learning behaviors each week using a rubric posted in their classrooms

They will record their scores in a chart to show their growth in each area!

QUARTER 1 River of Words: Poetry and Art Singapore Math Challenge (Math Strategies) Rubik’s Cube Math Logical Problem Solving and Creative

Thinking Caesar’s Stems – Latin stems for

vocabulary acquisition Passion Projects/ Self–selected research and

presentation projects Students will actively create new media rather than

passively consume new media (Jason Ohler, 2009)

PASSION PROJECTS!WHAT ARE YOU PASSIONATE TO LEARN ABOUT? Learn About (like history or a place, or something) Learn To Do (like computer skills) Learn to Make (like a trebuchet, or windmill) Learn to Create (like an art project or a story) Learn to Test (like a science experiment) Learn to Change (like an environmental project)

Students will be given one hour of Horizons time to work on this project each week, but are encouraged to continue work at home.

Students will ultimately present their completed projects.

Students will bring home project planning sheets & parents will receive copies in an email.
