August 2, 2020 Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
From the Pastor’s Desk

Praised be Jesus Christ! Some years ago, Timothy Cardinal Dolan was asked to address all the other Cardinals in the world. His
recollection of it is classic: “When Cardinal Bertone asked me to give this address in Italian, I worried, because I speak Italian like a
child. But then I recalled that, as a newlyordained parish priest, my first pastor said to me as I went over to school to teach the sixyear
old children their catechism, ‘now we’ll see if all your Theology sunk in, and if you can speak of the faith like a child.’ And maybe that’s
a fitting place to conclude: we need to speak again as a child the eternal truth, beauty, and simplicity of Jesus Christ and His Church.”

Cardinal Dolan was the Rector of the North American College when I was a student there from 19952000. As we get older, we become
more aware of the people who made the most lasting impact in our lives. It’s for this reason that many of us can remember almost every
teacher we ever had from kindergarten until our senior year in high school. We were so young and impressionable and only after many
years do we realize how much we actually learned. As the philosopher Mortimer Adler once put it, “Schooling is for the young.
Education comes later, usually much later.”

Now we’re living in a time when going to school is the topic of rather fierce debates. We ought to be praying fervently so that the right
decisions will be made, no matter what people might say or do when they inevitably disagree. We’ve been living for a long time with
folks who knew how to manage things. But the world has changed radically and we’re praying for true leaders who know where we’re
going and how to get there. If you don’t pray the Holy Spirit prayer often, now would be a good time to add it as a daily prayer for all of
our leaders, but especially for those entrusted with the education of our young people.

Our resident seminarian, Tim Reither, will be heading back to Rome a month from now. This is his last weekend with us at Holy Name
and on behalf of all of us at Holy Name, I want to publicly thank him for the many ways he generously served our parish community.
From serving every day at Mass to helping with cleaning to setting up our new method of recording Masses, Tim has been a jack of all
trades. And of his many gifts, his willingness to get involved and put himself out there will serve him well as a future priest in our
Diocese. We’ve been joking about how he’ll be coming back in 20 years as Holy Name’s pastor for what it’s worth, that would be a
real blessing for all of us.

The strand that links the previous paragraphs is the indispensable role of a solid education for all of our future priests. Guys like Tim
study and receive formation for many years before being ordained as priests of Jesus Christ. Thankfully, his studies are not only forming
his mind; his heart is just as in need of ongoing formation and his seminary training generously provides this. The years of seminary
training are both a challenging time and a privileged time. The challenge is finding balance between the hours of class lectures, study,
prayer, exercise, service, and a healthy social life. The privilege is spending four years with men who are sincere in their love for God
and His people. While we will miss Tim when he leaves us this week, we know he’s returning to Rome so that he can come home next
summer ready to become a holy and loving priest. As we pray for all of our students returning to the classroom, we include Tim and all
seminarians. They’re a concrete proof that our donations to the Diocesan Annual Appeal are helping to provide priests for the next
generation (this isn’t the smoothest segue into the Appeal, but I thought it was worth a try).

As we bid a fond farewell to Tim, we offer our warmest welcome to a priest who needs no introduction at Holy Name: Father Dan
Thelen. Father is covering the Masses this weekend so that he can tell us about a beautiful spiritual endeavor called “Chalice of Mercy.”
Most parishes are not able to host their annual mission coop because of the pandemic. But we’re blessed because we get to hear about
an inspiring prolife cause from a person who we trust and love. For the record, I’ll be covering Father Thelen’s Masses. That way, if I
hear that he’s badmouthing me to you, I’ll do the same to his people. You can text me after the 4:00 p.m. Saturday Mass and let me
know how it went!

A favorite quote for us as we enjoy this weekend’s mission preacher comes from the Diocese of Fairbanks: “Some give by going to the
missions. Some go by giving to the Missions. Without both there are no missions.” Father Thelen will explain what the Chalice of
Mercy mission does and how you’re invited to support their wonderful work. Watch Father closely this weekend and think of all the
hours he spent learning the faith. Moreover, imagine the countless sacrifices made by his parents and many others so that he could
receive an education that would instill wisdom in his mind and love in his heart. It’s possible that some of you reading this helped him
in significant ways by your kindness and support during his two years at Holy Name.

An education is only as good as the difference it makes in the lives of those with whom it’s shared: “For whoever wishes to save his life
will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it,” (Matthew 16:25). May God bless all of our educators and students, that
each will accept that with learning, lives may be changed for the better. God knows we’ve been changed by those who took the time to
teach us, especially those who spoke to us of the faith in the language of a child.

May God bless his missionaries, priests, and future priests that their words will deepen our faith in Jesus!

Your friend in Christ,
Father Martin

Time to Go to Joseph
St. Joseph watched over and protected Jesus as He grew up. As a result, St. Joseph was declared the protector of the
Catholic Church 150 years ago, and so we are honoring him during this anniversary year. As members of God’s family, the
Church, St. Joseph is our spiritual father and protector. It is Time to Go to Joseph, invoking his protection over our families,
our parish family and our country. To see more about the year of Joseph, go to: diolc.org/yearofstjoseph.

18th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Many people in our world are hungry and thirsty. This hunger and thirst go well beyond physical needs for food, security, and
shelter. Many are emotionally and spiritually parched, too. Behind every act of violence is a soul who hungers. People live with relation-
ships that actually starve them. They are abused, exploited, disrespected, laughed at, and marginalized. There is a lot of confusion and
inner pain that needs to be acknowledged and expressed. We all long to be understood and loved, even when our inner demons or who I
am make it difficult to be. Do you live with inner confusion and pain? Folks often wander through life without any real direction or pur-
pose and take their cues from what seems satisfying or popular at the moment. The deeper dots of our lives can easily remain unconnect-
ed, and we can find ourselves without grounding, purpose, or real happiness. Life becomes shallow and without real purpose as we hun-
ger and thirst for an ultimate love.
It’s easier to see the physical hungers and thirsts. We try to respond to these as best we can. Much more needs to be done. With
all that God’s earth can provide, nobody ought to face sleep at night with a belly that’s empty. It’s sinful. It’s unjust. But isn’t all hunger
unjust? It doesn’t need to be, and it should not be. Just as no one ought to be physically hungry and thirsty, there is really no need to be
emotionally or spiritually deficient either. If we have more privileges at our fingertips, it is easier to try to satisfy our emotional and spir-
itual hungers and thirst by acting on impulse or selfindulgence, carelessly following passions, or by seeking selfdestructive ways to dull
the ache of emptiness.
Folks need to know where to look for nourishment and need the right friends to help them find it. We may not think that we
have enough to respond to and to satisfy all of the needs, but we do. It doesn’t take much. Five loaves and two fish provided for a huge
crowd. With God, all things are possible. Our faith provides the direction for where God’s children must go to find the nourishment they
seek. It also tells us how to structure life so that justice and equity can be a reality for all. It also tells us how to respond to pain, sinful-
ness, and confusion. Come to the water and then help another get there.

Serenity Retreat: The Journey and The Dream
Presented by Loir Kieffer
October 2nd 4th, Cost $200
Space is limited to 20 participants. Register early!

The 12 Steps will take us on a journey that leads to our dream
of living a life in recovery. This retreat will help
participants make that journey. Our weekend together coincides
with the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi on October 4. St. Francis,
much like persons in recovery, experienced an emotional
wringer. Although he was not an alcoholic, he expressed what he
could see, feel, and wish to become as he came out on the other
side of that wringer. His journey and his dream are known as
"Perfect Joy." Our Program talks about something similar to
Francis' "Perfect Joy" on page 164 of the "Our Vision For You"
story in the Big Book of AA. We share what it was like before
recovery and what it is like now. We see, feel, and wish to
become "happy, joyous, and free" through our transformation
with the 12 Steps. This retreat will use group talks, a healing
service, guided and movement meditations, music, chair chi /
yoga, stretching, nature time, and 12 Step meetings to help all
participants journey towards the dream of joy.

We welcome Father Dan Thelen and the Founder of
Chalice of Mercy Valentyna Pavysukova.
Chalice of Mercy is a
Catholic mission to Ukraine, a country
marked by much suffering, including a long
and painful chapter of atheistic oppression
under Communism, and lately, since 2013 the
consequences of the war. Through our
mission, we seek to awaken hope and love, to
reflect God’s Light in a land that has known
too much darkness. Our initiatives are carried
out in close collaboration with the Catholic
KharkivskoZaporizhzhska Diocese.

God is Our Father and He has a very special, personal and deep
love for each one of us. Our hope is that through our prayer and
action, we might reveal the treasured dignity that each one of us
has before Him. We serve and protect all human rights and life
from the moment of conception until natural death. We organize
medical assistance to the most impoverished hospitals, hospices
and orphanages in Ukraine. We reach out with support, help and
relief to children with special needs. We help single mothers and
families that find themselves in the most difficult situations. But
most of all, our hope is that through His works, Our Father might
be known, loved and honored throughout the world.

sensitive to the needs of all of our families, we will also be
offering homeschool lessons and virtual meetings with the

set. Thanks to all our families for your quick response to the

RiteofChristianInitiationofAdultsbeginsAugust24,2020

Are you considering becoming Catholic? Are you curious and want to know more about the Catholic
Church? Would you like to be able to fully participate in the sacraments of the Catholic Church? If you
answered yes to any of these questions, then joining the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)
process may be right for you.

RCIA is a journey of faith for those who are searching and inquiring about what the Catholic Church
teaches and believes. RCIA is not a class or a program, it is a process of conversion. The RCIA process will prepare you to begin
your journey of faith which will hopefully lead to a lifelong commitment as a Catholic.

We’re not all at the same place in our faith journey, and the RCIA process has taken that into consideration. It is directed towards
individuals that are at any one of these places in their Catholic or Christian faith development: 1) never been baptized, 2)
baptized but received little or no faith formation, 3) baptized and had faith formation in another religious tradition, or 4)
received the sacrament of Eucharist but not the sacrament of Con-irmation.

If you would like to become a fully initiated member of the Catholic Church all you have to do is sign up for the RCIA process. The
-irst session for RCIA will be Monday, August 24, 2020 at 6:00 pm in the Parish Center. Sessions are held from August through
April when participants will celebrate the Sacraments during Easter Vigil on April 3, 2021.

It’s never too soon to begin to think about whether growing in your Catholic faith is something that you may be called to do. We
hope you consider joining us as we journey together through the RCIA process bringing each of our own unique stories to grow
and build this One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church!

To get more detailed information about the RCIA process or to discuss how it may relate to you speci-ically please call Fr. Martin
or Noel Furger at 7158424543 anytime.
