From the Pastor’s Desk Praised be Jesus Christ! My office sits at the corner of Thomas and 9th and my computer desk faces due north. In a prominent spot on the window sill sits a Mallard duck. Only once or twice has anyone asked about it, but there is a rather long backstory on how this duck came to Holy Name. It goes back about five years, and it started one beautiful spring morning when a female Mallard named Maude first came to Saint John’s. She was looking for a place to lay her eggs, and even though we had no room in the rectory, we mag-nanimously offered her our towering Bleeding Heart plant. I liked Maude from the start and she graciously accepted my invitation to become the star of my weekly columns. The drama of that spring spanned into summer and nearly won me the Pulitzer prize . . . oh, those were the days. Maude was a looker, evidenced by the fact that she had at least three suitors. In the end, she chose Lloyd, who had money and charisma. Though I can no longer recall the names of the others, one of them entered the seminary while the other fell into a deep de-pression. The sad one used to walk the streets – and I mean this literally, as he spent a lot of time trying to get hit by passing cars. Final-ly, he got his wish, as he was squashed one day by the ice cream truck. In the meantime, Maude and Lloyd had a brood of seven eggs gestating under the Bleeding Heart. As far as I can tell, Maude and I were like peas and carrots – I gave her good press and she allowed me to visit regularly. But then the ducklings hatched, and it became abundantly clear that Maude no longer wanted me around. While regular spiritual direction has helped to heal the trauma of that time, my parishioners thought that a going-away-gift might bring real closure. And so I have a Mallard in my window. Which brings me to the rabbit living under our deck . . . he’s Italian and goes by Federico. At least that’s what I thought. But yesterday I discovered a baby and realized that her name is actually Federica. I feed her an apple every day, and she seems to be happy at Holy Name. She knows we’re trying to grow the parish and she said she could bring in two dozen new members this summer. Sadly, I found her baby dead this morning. I’m not sure what happened and I feel bad for Federica. I set out some chocolate, in the event that she’s grieving. I thought of putting out a dish with some booze in it, but Federica took the pledge years ago and is still on the wagon. Some have mentioned that they think the isolation is getting to me . . . . what do you think?! Okay, on to more serious things. This Sunday we’re going to give away Scapulars to anyone who would like to be enrolled. Many of you already know what a Scapular is, and some of you are already enrolled and wearing one. The first thing to explain is that this is a devotion that one can take or leave. One of the remarkable things about our Catholic faith is that we have a treasure chest of devotions . . . and there’s something for everyone. The idea is that while we’re all equal in God’s eyes, we’re very different in terms of temperament and strengths and weaknesses. The Church offers dozens of beautiful devotions so that each of us can find something that helps our faith to grow and blossom. The Scapular is a devotion to the Blessed Mother that has been around for a very long time. In 1251 A.D. the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to a Carmelite named Simon Stock (he’s a canonized Saint now). She was dressed as a Carmelite (an ancient order that traces it origins back to Elijah, the Old Testament prophet) and gave Saint Simon the brown cloth of the Scapular, explaining as she did so, “Whosoever dies wearing this Scapular shall not suffer eternal fire . . . it shall be a sign of salvation, a protection in danger and a pledge of peace.” Initially, the Scapular was worn primarily by members of the Carmelite order. But more and more has it become a universal devotion. This culminated when the Blessed Mother told Lucia, one of the seers at Fatima, that “Our Lady wants all to wear the Scapular as their sign of Consecration to Her Immaculate Heart.” My Dad was a strong proponent of wearing the Scapular, and I wonder if he got that from his devotion to Our Lady of Fatima. I remember wearing the Scapular when I was younger, say around middle school. But when I was in high school, I started to become more self-conscious and didn’t want anyone to think I was overly pious and devout. Plus, there were the noticeable blemishes in my otherwise impeccable summer tan. I probably stopped wearing my Scapular for 5 years or so. But during my junior year in college I made the Total Consecration to Mary and just felt that I needed her help and protection if I was ever going to become a good guy. I’ve worn the Scapular ever since. There are many miraculous stories told about the Scapular, some of which make it clear that it is not a talisman or a lucky rab-bit’s foot that one uses for superstitious purposes. For example, there are stories of people who treated the Scapular like a “get-out-of-Hell-free” card, and lived a life of debauchery while simultaneously thinking they’d be saved in the end by the Blessed Mother’s prom-ise. Curiously, there are stories of people like that taking off their Scapulars before dying, reminding us that a devotion to Mary must be pure and without ulterior motives. Someone said wearing a Scapular is similar to putting on a letter jacket – it’s a way of identifying ourselves with certain people, in this case claiming that we want to be true children of God and of Mary. You don’t have to wear a Scapular to get to Heaven, though it might really help you to think about your faith and try to live it more heroically. Frankly, the closer we grow to God and His Saints, the harder life can be and the more we stumble and fall. This is because God wants humble children because only a humble and contrite heart can truly love sinners. If you’d like to be enrolled in the Scapular, please come to Holy Name at 11:00 a.m. this Sunday, May 3rd. Scapulars will be distributed, blessed, and then you’ll be en-rolled. Once you’re enrolled, it’s for life – if you lose your Scapular or stop wearing it, you never have to be re-enrolled. If the fabric irritates your skin, a Scapular medal carries the same promise. If you want to learn more about the Scapular and its history, the best booklet I’ve ever read is called Garment of Grace and can be read in less than an hour. The Scapulars we’ll be distributing were sewn by hand by Carmelite Sisters who live in Alexandria, South Dakota. Please pray for them and all the Carmelites around the world in grati-tude for spreading this wonderful devotion. I was hoping to say a word or two about Saint Joseph, whose Feast we celebrated on May 1st. This year is the 150th anniversary of his being named the Patron of the Universal Church. This year the Diocese will be promoting Saint Joseph in different ways, and I will share them with you as they cross my desk. My favorite prayers to Saint Joseph are the 30-day novena (which can be found at www.josephite.com ) and the 1900 year old prayer that begins, “Oh Saint Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God.” Saint Joseph has been one of my best friends for many years, and I could never adequately explain how much he has helped me in terms of hope and perseverance. God willing, we’ll revisit this theme again sometime soon. Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, may your names be on our dying lips! Your friend in Christ, Father Martin

Easter Flower Donations

We want to thank those who contributed for Easter flowers this year, and share with you that flowers will be purchased for our church. Because of our current situation, the Sacred Worship Committee had chosen not to purchase fresh flowers for Easter since no one could enjoy them. They are excited to fill the church with beautiful seasonal flowers when we are all able to come back and celebrate Mass together.

Summerfun cancelled: We tr ied our best to find a way to safely host some form of our annual event, but the circumstances conspired against us. I’m grateful to all who did their best to explore other options. For now, we are still running the raffle, though the date may be extended (we’ll keep you posted). Please do your best to sell as many raffle tickets as you can. It will be uphill sledding, but with your charisma and determination, you can do it. We are looking at some other future events to recapture some of the com-munity spirit that is fostered by Summerfun. For now, please remember that the funds raised by Summerfun (c. $40,000.00) are a part of our operating budget. That’s money that we’ll still need to raise in order to balance our budget. One excellent idea is for each parishioner to estimate the money that you would typi-cally spend at Summerfun and make that a donation to Holy Name. You could put it in an envelope marked “Summerfun” and send it our way. Thanks for your prayers during this time of uncertainty. For the record, all of our parishioners are hanging in there and not a single one of us is sick with COVID-19. And because we don’t want to do anything that will endanger any of you, we’ve had to cancel Summerfun this year. But we’ll be back in 2021!
