Topics of Learning in Grade 5 will be: Early Modern History 1500-1800 which will incorporate: The Aztecs and Incus, The American Revolution, The Native Americans, Enterprises and Research based on Essential Questions.

There will be a range of speaking and listening, reading and writing English Language Arts (ELA) genres, such as: Fantasy, Fiction Novel, Biographies, fiction and non fiction texts, Persuasive Arguments, Poetry and development of Basic Skills.

Mathematics will incorporate understanding of the place value system, negative differences, number facts and decimals, converting units of measure, fractions, 2 – step word problems ratio, proportion etc.

BIG MATHS, BEAT THAT!AIMS: To increase pupil motivation when learning the 4 number operations; To develop pupil mental agility;To monitor and further develop mathematical understanding.

A series of progressive tests, ranging from Grade 1 to 5The errors in each test, provide teaching points for the teacher.LET’S TRY ONE OR TWO!

Expectations:It is yours and your child’s right to receive an exceptional teaching and learning experience here at ISS. It is my responsibility to ensure that your child is given the opportunity to be the ‘Best they can be!’Help at home – talk about their learning, independence with scaffolds, project work, printer and internet, listen to and discuss reading, check and sign agenda’s daily. Homework given from Monday to Thursday; children also expected to read every day.

Please ensure your child receives at least 8 hours of sleep.

Discuss good books and their authors. Also discuss stories, articles and poems.

Tell your children about your own favourite authors and what makes these authors (in your opinion) different from others.

Share your own writing with your child. For example, let your child see you working on business reports, letters, and thank – you notes.

Show interest in your child’s writing. Be willing to read discuss your child’s stories, articles and poems.Encourage your child to self assess their writing.

Equipment needed - particularly whiteboard markers, Maths equipment and large squared (1cm) paper for mathematics investigations.

Uniform Guidelines: Please ensure that you child wears the correct uniform and that each item has their name inside. No jewellery, hair tied back on P.E days.
