OUR MISSION STATEMENT Good Shepherd is a Christian, caring community, nourished by a joyful spirit-filled liturgy that inspires our daily lives. We strive

Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time—February 14, 2010
Welcome To
GOOD SHEPHERD Catholic Church
Menomonee Falls, WI
Lent is the time of preparation for the
Triduum (Holy Thursday, Good Friday,
Holy Saturday/Easter Sunday) and is
both baptismal and penitential. We, as
members of the Church, are continu-
ously called to conversion. With the
church’s elect and candidates in the
catechumenal process, we use these
forty days to reflect on our own baptis-
mal promises. We journey with our can-
didates, Megan Ryddner and Brad
Eesley. The Oil of Catechumens and Oil
of Chrism are removed from their place
near the baptismal font. New oils,
blessed by the Archbishop at the Mass
of Chrism on Tuesday of Holy Week, will
be placed during the Holy Thursday ser-
vice. Special rites for our candidates will
be celebrated on the following Sundays:
Rite of Sending to the Cathedral for
the Rite of Election and On-going Conver-
sion: Sat., Feb. 20, 4:30 p.m.

FASTING: The Catholic Church asks
each member to preserve the penitential
character and purpose of Lent. For this
reason: a) Catholics who have celebrated
their 14th birthday are bound to abstain
from meat on Ash Wednesday and each
Friday of Lent; b) Catholics who have
celebrated their 18th birthday, in addi-
tion to abstaining from meat, should
fast, i.e. eat only one full meal on Ash
Wednesday and Good Friday. Smaller
quantities of food may be taken at two
other meals but no food should be eaten
at other times during those two days.
The obligation of fasting ceases with the
celebration of one’s 59th birthday.
Catholics should not lightly excuse them-
selves from these prescribed minimal
penitential practices. To remind us on
Sundays that we are in a different sea-
son, hospitality will serve coffee and
juice but NO cookies.

A MEN’S DISCUSSION OF ―THE
SHACK‖ Continuing on February 24, 2010,
all men are invited to a discussion of
―The Shack‖, a fictional book written
by William Paul Young depicting a
broken man’s dialogue with the di-
vine. Until then of course you will
need to read the book. This is the
kind of story that requires you to
read it to its conclusion before any
meaningful discussion may con-
tinue. If you do not have the book,
you can buy a copy from Gene Chris-
tensen (parish office 262-255-
2035). Even though we started the
discussion in January, it is not a pre-
requisite for the gatherings in Febru-
ary or March. The gatherings, spon-
sored by the Good Shepherd Men’s
Group, will take place in Rm. 203 at
7:00 pm.
Ash Wednesday Supper A simple meal of soup and bread on Wednesday, February 17, at 6:15.
Bring a loaf of sliced bread to share. Call the parish office at 255-2035
by noon on Monday, February 15, to register your family.
The burning of the palms will happen at 6:50 p.m. on Ash Wednesday at the
west side of the church. Mass begins at 7:00 p.m.
Ashes and Communion to the Homebound will be brought by home visitors
(part of the Pastoral Care ministry) to those who are homebound and
unable to participate in the Ash Wednesday liturgy. If you have a family
member or know of a Good Shepherd parishioner who would like a visit,
please call the office at 255-2035.
Update on Menomonee Falls Food Pantry The present location for the Falls food pantry, Hiawatha school, will not be
available in the coming months. The pantry is looking for a new location. If
you have a suggestion, call the parish office. Kathy Wodushek, pantry direc-
tor offers these statistics on the work of the pantry: In 2002 there were 95
households served; in 2009 - 481. The number of individuals – senior citi-
zens, other adults and children has risen over the years. In 2007 1,100 indi-
viduals visited the pantry; in 2009 1,403. The total number of visits in
2009 was 4,032. The need is growing with each year and as jobs become
harder to find. Concerning immediate needs, items such as canned pota-
toes, applesauce, cereal, personnel hygiene products, ravioli, catsup, salad
dressing, chunky soups, tuna, refried beans, diapers all sizes, and baby food
are especially needed. When you and your family go shopping, please keep
this list with you and pick up a few extras. It will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Monica Schultz, Good Shepherd food pantry coordinator.
Catholics Returning Home ~ Do you know someone who has left the
Church? Most of us do not have to look very far to find non-practicing
Catholics in our circle of family and friends. Many of us are concerned
about these loved ones; however, we don’t know how to help them. Obvi-
ously, most of them are searching, but how can we help them find their way
home?
As baptized, practicing Catholics we have a precious gift of faith and love
from the Lord that needs to be shared with our non-practicing brothers and
sisters. First, we need to pray for them. Secondly, we need to extend a per-
sonal invitation to them to come home to the Catholic Church. Most non-
practicing Catholics are waiting for an invitation to return. Many mistakenly
think they are excommunicated and are not welcome to return for a variety
of reasons.
Many non-practicing Catholics carry a tremendous amount of guilt and mis-
information about the Church so they are afraid of approaching the Church
for fear of being rejected. You can make a tremendous difference in some-
one’s life simply by reaching out to them and telling them that we miss them
and would like for them to come back home to our Church family.
SINGLE SOULS 35+ UPCOMING EVENTS: Saturday February 20th, join the group for Meno-
monee Falls Chilly Fest. Plan to meet at the
heated tent by Mill Park Pond at 11:00 am. Call
Linda at 262-345-5104 for more information.
Immigration Corner
G.S.I.S.G. (Good Shepherd Immigration Study
Group) Antonio Martinez has lived in the U.S. as
a legal permanent resident for 35 years.
In 1994 he filed all necessary paper-
work to legally bring his wife to the U.S.
from Michoacan, Mexico. Sixteen years
later, due to U.S. immigration laws and
painfully long backlogs, Antonio contin-
ues to wait. Like millions of other immi-
grants seeking to legally bring family
members, he hopes and prays for
changes in immigration law that will
reduce the waiting period for family vi-
sas.
Visa applications submitted in May of
1987 by a legal resident of the U.S. for
a brother or sister from the Philippines
are just now being processed . . . that’s
a 23 year wait period! To learn more
about visa wait times, visit http://
travel.state.gov/visa/frvi/bulletin/
bulletin_1360.html.
Vocation Corner Jesus reminds us who are the blessed and warns us about who are
cursed. Pray that you may be among those who are blessed.

Next Week: 1st Sunday in Lent—February 21: ―Taking on the Identity of Jesus: Major
Role Reversal.‖ With Miriam Brown, O.P. As we visit again the gospel stories we read about the plight of people of Jesus’ time—the blind
man crying out to see, the crippled person lying by the pool waiting for help, the Samaritan woman
suffering a great thirst, and Nicodemus coming by night to question and understand. We easily
identify with them and their needs. Like them we pray to see, to be healed, to walk. We come to
God with our thirst and our seeking.
The revolution is that Jesus has invited us not to be ―the needy‖ but to be like himself. St. Paul
says it: to put on the spirit of Christ. This challenging reversal of our more timid identities throws a
new light on our Prayer, Relationships and Preaching.
Sister Miriam Brown, O.P. is a Sinsinawa Dominican on the staff at Siena Retreat Center. She is
a retreat facilitator, spiritual guide, and often a presenter in other settings. She teaches in
“Theology by the Lake” Program and is a team member of the two-year “Spiritual Guidance Train-
ing Program” and the coordinator of the peace and justice series “Situations of Substance.”
Miriam has an eye for the spirit’s movement in the world and a deep appreciation of God’s work-
ings in our lives.
