Statutory noise controls include

• Departure noise limits and noise preferential routes

• Restrictions on number of night movements and their noise footprint

• Minimum heights to be achieved; the monitoring and reporting of

compliance using the noise and track keeping system

Mitigations beyond NMB Workplan

• Actions proposed in the Noise Action Plan 2019-2024

• Gatwick’s noise insulation scheme extends to the 60 dBA Leq

contour and thereafter up to 15km from the runway

Noise Exposure Contours 2017• Actual modal split 54dBA contour decreased by 5% from 88.1km2 to

83.8km2 and the 57dBA contour decreased by 3% from 44.2km2 to

42.7 km2

• Day standard modal split 54 dBA contour decreased by 4% from

86.5km2 to 82.7 km2 and the 57dBA contour also decreased by 3%

from 43.8 km2 to 42.6 km2

• Population count within the actual 54dBA contour decreased by 3%

from 11,600 to 11,300

Route 4 - Update

• We are working to revert the Route 4 conventional standard

instrument departures (SIDs) to their position on 6 April 2017

• A safety review was completed and the SIDs submitted to CAA for

approval in May 2018

• We published an explanation of the historic changes to the route

based on the review of Route 4 conducted by the CAA

• We have appointed ANS/Osprey to develop the Route 4 Airspace

Change proposal

• The rigorous ACP development process does however mean that a

final outcome is likely to take up to two years to achieve

Departure Route Review

• Assessment of the impacts of Heathrow routes on Gatwick’s Route 3

SIDs to enable an increase to the first altitude restriction

• Studies of aircraft performance on departure to identify restrictions

and develop options to allow Gatwick departures to climb in a more

consistent and low noise configuration

• Review of lateral and vertical departure route performance:

• Routes 1, 7, 8 and 9 - January 2019

• Routes 5 and 6 - February 2019

Case for Airspace Modernisation• Traffic is increasing, airspace

inefficiencies are creating environmental issues and delays are increasing

• Airlines are introducing next generation aircraft but legacy airspace means we aren’t fully exploiting this benefit

• Airspace re-design potentially unlocks innate capability, reducing noise by up to 5dB and emissions by up to 14%

Future Airspace Strategy

• Opportunity to deliver for communities and aviation

• But, local communities suspicious of aviation intentions

• Needs Government and industry leadership to achieve change

Airspace Modernisation Process

• NERL will redesign London airspace (LTMA) and coordinate airport inter-dependencies
