A Typical Day’s Schedule

**Subject to change based on weather, delays, special programs, student need, etc.

9:00-9:15 Homeroom: AM Routines & Silent Reading

9:15 – 10:05 Content Class 1 (Reading, Social Studies, Science)

10:05-10:10 Restrooms & HEALTHY snack (*please send your child with a snack)

10:10 – 11:30 Math Workshop – Classroom Assignment flexible based on need

11:30 – 12:00 Word Study (in Homeroom)

12:00 – 12:50 Recess then Lunch

12:50-1:40 Specials

1:40 – 1:50 Restroom Break & Transition

1:50 – 2:40 Content Class 2 (Reading, Social Studies, Science)

2:40 – 3:30 Content Class 3 (Reading, Social Studies, Science)

3:30-3:35/3:40 Homeroom: Planners, Clean-up, & Pack up….. Dismissal

Wednesday Workshop

• On some Wednesdays we have a workshop block at the beginning of the day and shortened content rotations.

• This block is called “Wednesday Workshop” and can include study center for those who need to get caught up, remediation, and learning extension opportunities.

9:00 – 9:15 Homeroom

• On time please – an important time for them to

prepare their materials & minds– we switch classes and begin

content as soon as announcements are over

• Partially departmentalized = rotate classes.• AM: 1 rotation + math + Word Study• PM: 2 rotations• This is just a “sample schedule”• Integrated subjects, assignments, & grades.

10:05 – 10:10 Restroom & Snack• It’s hard to pay attention when you are hungry -

NEED breakfast & a snack.• Snack: healthy, simple, QUICK, & clean.• Suggestions: fruit, veggies, cracker sandwiches,

pretzels, dry cereal. • Due to dietary restrictions & allergies, snacks are

not provided and are not to be shared.• Water bottles: with lid & only unflavored water.

Typically students will take a pre-assessment for each topic/unit and then are assigned to a classroom based on identified strengths & needs.

vocabulary12:00 – 12:50• Recess (be prepared to go outside in

any weather…we live in Ohio & it constantly changes ) and then

Lunch – 20 minutes – please keep it simple

12:50 – 1:40 Specials

• Help keep track of which special they have: Art, Music, P.E., Library• Make sure they are prepared: –dressed appropriately & water bottle for

PE –recorder and binder for music class. –Books to return to library

• Can’t call home for these

Much of our curriculum is taught using History Alive techniques.

• Students’ Responsibilities: – Students fill out planners (we model exactly

what they should write…no excuses)– Students check that they have everything

they need to complete homework– Students document point levels

• Parents please check daily that assignments listed in planner are completed.

3:30 – 3:35 ~ HomeroomPlanners, Pack-up, Clean-up, Dismissal

Homework• expected to complete each night (due the next day unless

otherwise noted)• up to an hour of homework to complete • be mindful when scheduling extra-curricular activities • assigned at an independent level and shouldn’t require

much of your support• If it is consistently requiring more than an hour - contact

us… No Tears! & No Fights! - write a note/send email• extenuating circumstances - write us a note/send email

Differentiation• We believe that all students can and must

learn at high levels of achievement, however not always in the same way or at the same pace.

• Assignments will differ from student to student.

• If absent/not sure…calling a friend isn’t always accurate

• It is very difficult to make up a science lab, a social studies skit, a language arts presentation, an important math workshop, etc.

• Please have your student here as much as possible so that they don’t miss learning opportunities that are key for their success.

Building an Anti-Bullying Community• Focus: Olde Sawmill’s Core Beliefs (Be Positive, Respectful, Responsible, Safe, and Your

Best). • Our Belief: Building a community plays an important role in developing

– self-esteem– empathy– sharing – acceptance.

• Our Hope: Creating a unified spirit of cooperation and acceptance will produce an environment where all students see themselves as part of a group, feel safe, are supported to take risks, and are able to encourage each other in positive and appropriate ways.

• NOTE: Invitations need to be distributed outside of school.

Fifth Grade Expectations• Come prepared, with all required materials.• Listen, follow directions, and stay on task. • Demonstrate respect of all people, property,

and the learning process (don’t disrupt it).• Homework, assignments, and projects are to

be completed to the best of your ability and should show adequate effort.

Points Reward System• Each day a student starts off with 100 points• They keep their points by following all

expectations• Each infraction = point reduction, which is

documented throughout the day• Students are to document their daily level in

their planners• Reported under “Homeroom” on Progress Book

Point System• Irish – 100– Raffle Draw & Candy/Treat (usually weekly)

• Green – 90– Candy/Treat (usually weekly)

• Yellow – 70 - 80– Loss of one recess

• Red – 60– parents and Mr. Wolfe notified– extreme behaviors may go directly to red
