Legend of King ArthurThe first outline of Arthur's life is givenby Geoffrey of Monmouth in "TheHistory of the Kings of Britain" writtenabout 880 years ago. How much ofthis life was fact or fiction isuncertain but a visit to NorthCornwall will allow you to learn somuch! Geoffrey tells us that Arthurwas the son of Uther Pendragon,King of the Britons, in a dangeroustime after Roman rule - the DarkAges. His account makes Tintagelthe fortress of King Gorlois and hisQueen Ygerna.

With the help of Merlin's magicUther tricked Ygerna into makinglove to him, thus Arthur wasconceived at Tintagel. ( SeeTintagel Castle, English Heritage). The child was given to Ector to beraised in secret. After Uther's deaththere was no King ruling all England.

Merlin placed a Sword in the Stonein London, saying that whoeverdrew it out would be King.

Arthur did so and Merlin had himcrowned. Arthur married Guineverewhose father gave him the RoundTable as a dowry. This was followedby a wonderful age of peace andchivalry. However, there werethreats from overseas and Arthurhad to travel to mainland Europeleaving Mordred, his son, in charge.Mordred rebelled, taking the crownfor himself, Arthur returned to Britain.

There followed a number of battlesas Mordred retreated to Cornwall. Finally they met at Camlann on theRiver Camel where a 6th centuryMemorial Stone now marks the spot(accessible through The ArthurianCentre at Slaughter Bridge, 10minute drive from Tintagel). The vastmajority of both armies died in theFinal Battle but Arthur spottedMordred amongst the bodies. Hecharged at him blaming him for the

civil war and end of a Golden Age.He killed his son but Arthur's skull wasseriously injured by Mordred's swordas he fell dying. The battle was nowover. So ended the Fellowship ofthe Round Table. Arthur knew hewas mortally wounded and askedSir Bedevere to return the SwordExcalibur to The Lady of the Lake (Legend has it that this is DozmaryPool near Jamaica Inn on BodminMoor). Arthur was then taken toAvalon to be healed - one day toreturn and save the British peoplefrom subjugation.

This is a very short summary of themany, many stories of Arthur. Someof the later Medieval story tellersexpanded on these stories, sometimes adding in more magic, mystery and monsters, to keep theiraudience enthralled but much ofGeoffrey's 'History' might have beenbased on fact (just like the stories ofTroy led to its discovery). Visit KingArthur's Great Halls in Tintagel tofind out more about the medievalArthur.

Intriguingly Tintagel was a major 6thcentury trading centre.Archaeologists have found darkage buildings and high valueimports from the Mediterranean, a6th century slate carving was foundon Tintagel island in 1997 - itincludes a personal name verysimilar to Arthur. A large granitememorial stone was found atCamlann, Slaughterbridge in 1602.

It commemorates a powerful Britishleader and is dated to c.540AD -the date of the final battle. NorthCornwall was clearly the centre ofa trading empire based on Cornishtin, minerals and other goods. There are numerous facts andarchaeological finds that tie inperfectly with Geoffrey ofMonmouth's account of Arthur.

St. Materiana ChurchSt. Materiana Church was builtalmost entirely as it appears today,in its cruciform shape of nave, chancel and transepts, betweenthe years 1080 and 1150, in thetime of the first Norman earls ofCornwall, Robert of Mortain and hisson William. They held Tintagel withother lands of the earldom, andbuilt their castle at Bossiney, somesmall remains of which may still beseen. They were followed by EarlReginald, a son of Henry 1, whoseems to have built the first castleon the island and probably finishedthe building of the Church.

It seems likely that the presentChurch was built on the site of anoratory served in Celtic days bythe monks of Minster and laterreplaced by a Saxon-style building. This would mean that Christianworship has been continuallyoffered on this spot for 1400 years. There is a good view of CastleIsland from the Church.

A peaceful family run park, in King Arthur’s mystical village of Tintagel.

Perhaps one of the greatestimpacts on the Tintagel landscapeover the last 500 years has beenthe extent of quarrying and miningin the area.

MinesDuring the 18th and 19th centuriessmall mines opened all along theNorth Cornwall coast. Here inTintagel a mine was cut into theisland in 1806 known as KingArthur’s mine. It producedquantities of copper and lead untilit closed in 1854.

Slate QuarriesCliff quarries are a particularfeature of the region concentratedalong a small area of coast fivemiles on either side of Tintagel.Slate was quarried from the 1300suntil the early twentieth century. Agood example of these workingscan be seen at Lanterdan Quarry, south of Tintagel. Still workingtoday, Trevillett Quarry founded byWelsh slate miners during the 19thcentury contains two valuable

beds of slate, a red veined varietysuitable for walls and patios and ablue variety which produced theslates and floor of the Visitor Centre.

Renowned for excellent pub food, welcoming bar & spectacular views of the sea & cliffs, The Port William has the perfect restaurant setting. The recently

refurbished bedrooms also ensure a comfortable & memorable stay.

Trebarwith StrandTrebarwith Strand - With its vastcliffs, dark caves and fine goldensand, this was once the centre ofthe local slate trade, from wherequarried stone was exported.

In the 1800s, this natural cove grewin importance mainly due toextensive quarrying along the cliffsand inland at the Prince of Walesquarry. It was so much easier toextract slate on the coast. Not onlywas it good quality, but there wereno problems with waste material. Itwas just thrown into the sea.Transport was made easy by simplyshipping the slate out directly fromthe quarry site via Port William, asmall harbour at the south end ofthe cove. Today the abandonedquarries leave a legacy of richindustrial heritage that is clearlyvisible from the coast pathbetween Trebarwith Strand andTintagel.

Today, Trebarwith’s beautifulbeach, known as the Strand, is very

popular with locals and holidaymakers. Frequent strong winds offthe Atlantic Ocean make forexcellent surfing. The clean sand, warm pools and climbing rocksmake it a great place for children. The beach is tidal and at low tide itextends for almost a mile. At hightide the water covers the beachcompletely for about two hours. It issafer to bathe after low tide, whenthe tide is coming in. During holidayseasons lifeguards are present toensure the safety of bathers.

Davidstow and Bodmin Moor Camelford and DelaboleDuring the Second World War, RAFDavidstow Airfield was built. In 1941the land was acquired andconstruction started early in 1942providing a three runway airfieldwith extensive dispersal areas using700 acres of moor and farm land.

At 970ft above sea level it was thehighest airbase in the country, home to coastal commandsquadrons involved in air searescue, U-boat hunting andshipping patrols. It closed inDecember 1945.

Afterwards it was used as a motorracing circuit. In the 1950s threeFormula 1 races were held there.

Today, the main control tower isclearly visible with views to CrowdyReservoir, Roughtor and Brown Willy.

Located next to Dairy CrestCreamery (the home of Davidstowand Cathedral City cheeses), theRAF Memorial Museum and theDavidstow Airfield & Cornwall atWar Museums are well worth a visit.Their websites give detailedinformation and lists of forthcomingevents.

Delabole slate is probably the finestslate available and is knownthroughout the world. The quarry isone of the largest man made holesin Europe and can be visited free ofcharge.

Slate has been quarried here sincethe early twelfth century. InElizabethan times five small privatequarries were combined to formthe old Delabole Slate Company.Over 1000 men were employedand produced an average of 120tonnes of slate each day. It wastransported by horse and wagon toPort Gaverne and then taken byboat around the country and inlater years by train.

Today the Delabole SlateCompany Ltd. is a private Cornishcompany and employs around 40people.

Safe motoringPlease remember, going on holiday is probably thelongest journey you will do in a year.

Join a motoring organisation. If you break down onroute recovery to your home can be hugelyexpensive.

Have your car serviced by a reputable garage. GoodGarage Scheme members are subject to a strictmonitoring code and can be trusted to do a goodjob.

Always check your oil, coolant and screen washlevels, tyre pressures and lights before your journey.

Check the condition of your tyres. On motorwayswhen driving at high speeds your tyres work hard. Many breakdowns and some accidents are causedby tyre problems. Check your tyres for wear anddamage. Pressures will need to be increased whenloaded or towing.

If you are towing make sure the tyres on your trailer orcaravan are fully checked as above.

If you have a problem with your car coming down onholiday, have it checked as soon as possible.Problems rarely disappear on their own.

Make sure if you have a roof rack that both it and theload are secure. We can have very high winds inCornwall.

When using cycle racks, make sure that both the rackand the cycles do not obscure the lights or numberplate.

Keep your petrol tank well filled. Getting stuck downquiet narrow lanes in the middle of the countryside isnot much fun.

Take your time! Cornwall is rural and has many narrowlanes with blind bends. Always anticipate thepossibility that just around that narrow corner theremay be a wide farm vehicle that cannot stop quickly. There may also be a family enjoying a walk or cyclistson the road. Enjoy a leisurely drive and stay safe.
