What do we aim for ?Sapere Aude

Durham Johnston School’s motto isSapere Aude - Dare to be Wise. We dare to be wise in all our work, from the impact of Durham Johnston on individuals to the work we do together, as a school and withinDurham City.

In wisdom, we aim to maintain our traditions, develop excellence at all levels and transform the lives of our young people. We aim constantly to build on our historyand maintain our position among the best schools in England.

As we plan and develop each year we consult with governors, staff, students and parents, and note the findings of other assessors such as OFSTED who judged the school outstanding in February 2015.

We strive to assist our young people to fulfil their potential so they leave us with the confidence, skills and knowledge for a successful future.

Is Johnston very different from primary school?

It is, so to help children think about transition, the Headteacher, Deputy Head and Head of Year 7 meet Year 6 children and their parents during the year. They have the opportunity to visit the school on Induction Day in July. Parents are also invited to come to the school to meet the team - we hope all of this removes any anxiety about changing schools.

When young people join the school in other year groups, we try very hard to make sure they settle in quickly. Parents and students meet key staff and we liaise with previous schools. A responsible member of the form welcomes students and takes them to lessons for the first few days. New students feel part of our community and very quickly make friends easily in our happy atmosphere.

Students will choose an additional language in Year 8which continues into Year 9. It is in Year 9 that studentsmake their choices for Key Stage 4.

Key Stage 4

At KS 4 as well as the core curriculum and the other KS 3 subjectsa number of additional subjects are offered, these changewith demand, but would typically include at GCSE, Business Studies,Computer Science, Photography, Performing Arts and a varietyof technology subjects. Some of our students will have theopportunity to study vocational subjects such as Hair and Beauty,Construction and Motor Vehicle Studies in partnership with otherlocal schools and colleges. We value Modern Foreign Languages andalmost all of our students take at least one language at GCSE.

When young people join us in Year 7 at Johnston they are taught in mixedability groups for all subjects apart from Maths and English in which they are taught in sets according to their ability. Setting increases from Year 8 upwards and we review our arrangements regularly to make sure all pupils are in the right teaching group.

In the Learning Support department we are committed to enabling young people to have a full, happy and successful time at Johnston. Our core purpose is to assist students with SEN and additional needs to fulfil theirpotential. With this aim, we identify the needs of these students in several ways and then use this information to offer tailored interventions and focused support.
