John Delaney opens new Astro Pitch at
New Village
What an evening it was. Thanks to everyone who came to the event where John Delaney, CEO of the FAI officially turned on the All Weather Pitch lights at the Oughterard Soccer club.
There was a great turn out from club members, parents and friends of the club.
It was great to see John Delaney taking time out to visit our club and for interacting so kindly with our young players many requests for photos, a true gentleman.
The club would like to thank their main sponsors Galway Wind Park and Supermacs Oughterard for their valued support for the club over the years.
A great turn out for the opening of the new Astro Pitch at New Village

One of the fastest growing rugby clubs in Connacht – and, perhaps, the country – Oughterard RFC are now planning the next phase of their development in order to cater for the ever-increasing number of children and adults descending upon the West Galway town.
No doubt, the club has come a long way since players first gathered in a field owned by Pat Higgins of Sweeney’s Hotel in 2004. At that time, the session centred around throwing the oval ball about while practicing footwork in between the rocks and stones that littered the earth. No cones or bollards were required. To this day, it makes current Club President Norman Deacy smile. “There are actually pictures of the side of the hill and the rocks being marked out on a Saturday morning so the kids don’t fall on them. That is where it started.
“Since then, the club has got bigger and bigger and last year was the first year where we saw kids who started at U-6s or U-7s back then breaking into the Firsts’ team for the first time. So, the flow has begun to happen.”Although not a founding member of the club, Deacy, a former player and honorary secretary of Galwegians RFC, got involved shortly after that
when his sons began to express an interest in playing mini-rugby. At this time, the Deacy family were living in Oughterard.
“I was a Galwegian all my life – as was my father and grandfather – but my two sons are playing out there. I asked them did they want to play with ‘Wegians but they have no affinity to it. They started in Oughterard when they were five years of age and that is all they know. It is the same with the rest of the guys.”
Indeed, he says the allegiance shown by the players – who hail from Clifden to the Westside of the City, with Moycullen the biggest catchment area in between – to Oughterard RFC is “just frightening”.
“The players tend to stay if there is a team for them,” says Deacy. “Now, we are at the stage where there are 170 minis, from leprechauns up to 12s, and we have 50 youth players. Then, there is a Firsts’ team that plays in the J2 League and they have a squad of about 30 while there is also a Veterans’ team that tours every year and they have about 20. So, we have over 300 players in all.

The Discover Oughterard group are currently looking into
the possibility of making a video history about Oughterard
and it's townlands. We would love to interview our oldest
residents about the customs, folklore, local heritage and
the old way of life that is rapidly changing. This project will
be carried out in conjunction with the Oughterard Heritage
Group.
But we need your help! Who better to lead us on this trip
down this down memory lane than our own local charac-
ters?
We need you to suggest people who we should talk to and
through a unique collection of portrait interviews we will
attempt to create a video history which will be preserved
for our future generations.
We are aiming to screen the final movie at the start of the
2017 Mayfly Festival at a gala event for the whole village
to enjoy
So please email [email protected] or post
on our Facebook with your suggestions on who we should
interview.
We are really looking forward to working on this exciting
and worthwhile project for the community.

New First Year Youth Club
A new youth club for 1st year secondary
school students started meeting in
Oughterard in late 2016. The group got off to
a great start with almost 30 young people
registering as members. So far the group
have been meeting for a range of fun
activities, they have take a trip ice skating in
Galway and they’ve held an end of year
party in the youth café.
The group meet every Friday evenings from
8-9.30pm weekly to undertake various
activities, workshops, games, trips and fun
projects.
A number of parents kindly volunteered their
time to participate in training and to plan
activities for the group. We would like to
thank all volunteers for getting involved and
we look forward to working with them
throughout the year If you would like to get
involved, please get in touch for more
information!
In late 2016, a number of students from 5th yr in
St. Pauls travelled with the staff of the Oughterard
Youth Café to NUIG to receive and celebrate their
Bronze Gaisce President’s Awards.
The ceremony was hosted in NUI Galway in
association with Gaisce Ireland and NUI Alive
Student Volunteers, to celebrate the students
many hard-earned achievements over the past 12
months.
Following a year of volunteering their time within
their community, participating in a range of
recreational activities, exploring new skills and
undertaking an overnight hiking expedition to
Achill Island, they received their medals and
certificates.
We would like to extend a huge congratulations to
everyone involved for their determination and
perseverance!

Watch out for parkrun! A group of fitness enthusiasts in the village are seeking to bring the popular parkrun concept to Corribdale Park in Oughterard in the very near future.
parkrun is such a simple concept: turn up every Saturday at 9.30am in Corribdale Park and run / jog or walk the 5k course. It doesn’t matter how fast you go. It doesn’t matter what you’re wearing. What matters is taking part.
It’s why parkruns are never more than 5km – it’s a distance that anyone can complete (even if some of us are walking by the end…)
parkrun is all about inclusiveness and wellbeing. We want as many people as possible to feel part of a real local community brought together by this free event.
And it’s why the format of parkrun so simple: register once, then turn up
and take part. Watch the local Facebook pages for further details.
