CASS MUSIC
LEARNING IN ACTION
Students participated in our first ever Virtual Songwriting Workshop
on May 12 and May 13. We had the pleasure of listening to profes-
sional musicians from Toronto, Halifax, and all the way from London,
England!. In light of the global pandemic, the music students in Mr.
Braiden and Ms Robinet’s classes have been focusing on writing their
own song as students could only use instruments such as guitar,
drums, piano, and bass in class this school year. Students selected
learned chord progressions and wrote their own lyrics during this cre-
ative process.
Why not hear from real artists in the music industry through a virtual
platform?! We invited Juno award winner Meaghan Smith (Halifax,
NS), The Indiana Drones (Windsor, ON), Christee Palace (Windsor/
Toronto, ON), Loz Garratt (Bassist for Jamie Cullum, London, England),
Yanick Allwood (Toronto, ON), and Bradley Barnham from Family of
Things (Hamilton, ON) to participate in the workshop. Students were
able to ask the artists questions and each artist offered students a
unique perspective of their song writing techniques and processes.
They also performed a live acoustic song for us as well!

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
This Quadmester, the students in
Ms Thompson's classes had their learning
experience enhanced with support from the
Greenhouse Academy. Students who were
learning in-class, as well as those learning
from home, got their hands dirty by building
their own terrariums. They learned about
closed environments, the water cycle, human
impacts on the environment and to consider
local careers related to the environmental
and agricultural sectors.
Well, here we are …..
After another tumultuous year we have successfully reached the
end of June! Thank you to all our families, staff, students and com-
munity partners for being so flexible and understanding as we
have navigated the many demands and changes in the education
system and school schedule this year.
I would like to thank Vice-Principal Karen Masson for her hard
work and dedication to the students and staff at College Avenue.
We say farewell to Karen and wish her all the best in her new
position as Vice-Principal at London South Collegiate.
Once a Knight always a Knight!
I would also like to formally welcome Kirby Duffy as our new Vice-
Principal. Kirby is joining us from H.B. Beal Secondary School in
London.
We are still in the process of creating our timetables and staffing
the school for September. Our guidance team may be in contact in
the next couple of weeks to talk to students about schedule con-
flicts. Timetables will be available in August.
We will be ready to return to school in September. But right now
summer is here, and I hope you all have a safe, relaxing and
enjoyable summer.

2021 VIRTUAL SKILLS COMPETITION
VISUAL ARTS
The CASS art students continue to create great art pieces, even as we
are all learning and teaching from home. The students in our Grade
10 course, worked on various drawing activities that included con-
tour drawings, illuminated letters and still life pieces.
HVAC students Sam Jankovic and Dylan Daltrey took on the
challenge of representing both CASS and TVDSB at this year’s Virtual
Skills Competition. These two exceptional students managed to ini-
tially prepare for an in-person competition, then pivot to a virtual
competition during our lockdown.
Sam volunteered to compete in the Workplace Safety Competition.
He was able to incorporate his experience working at his co-op
placement with an electrical contractor into his presentation. He was
also tasked with identifying hazards in a virtual setting. His efforts
paid off in earning the bronze medal.
Dylan competed in the Refrigeration competition where he
dominated the field. Dylan was given a deadline, a drawing, and the
material to build a mock-up refrigeration tubing system. His time
preparing for the competition earned him a gold medal and a com-
mendation from the Refrigeration Tech Chair.
Congratulations to Sam and Dylan for once again ensuring CASS was
represented at the annual Skills Competition and for bringing home a
gold and a bronze metal for CASS and TVDSB.
This year our Leadership Students modified our Midknight Grade 8
Orientation from a school sleepover to a 5-week online orientation!
Grade 11 student, Grace Hird, organized this year's orientation which
consisted of different Instagram Challenges, weekly Q&A sessions
including a live session with our Vice-Principal Mrs. Masson, and the
use of breakout rooms for students to meet each other in small
group sessions lead by Leadership students. This online event was a
huge success with over 100 future Knights participating! Thank you
to the Leadership students for making this possible!
Henny DeVries, one of our Grade 12 photography students, entered
her photograph, Greenhouse, March 1, 2020 in the annual Wood-
stock Art Gallery Youth Art Show. 24 Oxford County students had
their work featured in the juried show. Henny’s piece was selected
for Juror’s Choice Award by Marla Botterill, a multimedia artist and
professor in the Fine Arts Department at Fanshawe College.
