Humility is the path chosen by God to communicate and effect his magnanimity and redeeming love to all humanity. It is also the path that God prepares for us to follow to advance in our stewardship way of life. In the gospel, Jesus teaches us about the virtue of humility as he discerns the behavior of the guests who are pushing their way to the most prominent seats at a dinner party, obviously because they wanted to be recognized as important. He says, “everyone who exalts himself shall be humbled, and he who humbled himself shall be exalted” (Lk. 14:11). Undoubtedly, self-exaltation or self-promotion is not the way of God. It is the logic of the world. A disciple who loves God cannot be proud nor arrogant. He must be humble. The Book Sirach teaches that the greater the person is and has become, the more he should behave humbly. He has to conduct his affairs with humility, and he will find favor with God (cf. Sir. 3:17-18). However, if one exalts oneself, he/she will soon be humiliated (cf. Lk. 1:51-52; Matt. 23:12). This is God’s way of discipline. Self-exaltation is like a balloon when filled with much air explodes. God cannot be fooled by self-exaltation or self-promotion. God opposes the proud and lifts the lowly (cf. Prov. 3:34, 1 Pt. 5:5). Our Lord Jesus is the perfect model of humility. He opted for the path of humility, which started from his lowly birth in a remote place to the road of passion, suffering, and death on the cross. It is his humility and obedience that he willingly sacrifices himself to vanquish the darkness of death by death, and those in darkness bestowing life. Pope Francis, in one of his homilies, talked about this humility of Jesus. He said, “everything happens on the road of humility. God, humbles, lowers himself: he comes among us and lowers himself — and he continues to humble himself even to the cross.” To learn humility, therefore, is to know our Lord Jesus more deeply, follow him more closely, and love him more tenderly. We are invited to come and learn from him because of his meekness and humility (cf. Matt. 11:28-29). Humility is the golden rule for all disciples of Jesus. Humility is truth. It is not about to cast one’s eyes down. It is appreciating one’s strengths and accepting one’s weaknesses -- to celebrate the strengths and give thanks to God and accept the truth of one’s weaknesses —it is integrity, sincerity, and honesty. Humility makes us acknowledge our weakness and seeks God’s redeeming love for healing and strength. It does not only make us real, but it creates in us a capacity for the closest possible intimacy with God that leads us to become an instrument of God’s providential care for those who are in the peripheries. So, our Lord Jesus, in reaction to the attitude shown by the guests, introduces the logic of God: “When you hold a lunch or dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers, or your relatives or your wealthy neighbors, in case they might invite you back and you have repayment. Rather, when you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the disabled, the lame, the blind; blessed indeed will you be because of their inability to repay you” (Lk. 14:12-14). Our Lord assures us that our practice of humility, and if we feed those who could not repay as back will be rewarded at the resurrection of the righteous (cf. Lk.14:14). Therefore, humility is the pathway to advance our stewardship way of life. Without it, without the ability to publicly confess our sins and our human frailty, we cannot attain salvation nor proclaim Christ, nor pretend to be his witness. - Rev. Manny Hewe

Dear brothers and sisters,

We are all gently reminded to embrace the virtue of humility.

The Memorial ofSaint Gregory the Great, Pope

St. Gregory was born at Rome in 540. He was successively senator and prefect of Rome before the age of 30. After five years he resigned and became a monk, transforming his own house into a Benedictine monastery, and founding six others. At the age of 50 he was elected pope, serving from 590 to 604. In 14 years he accomplished much for the Mystical Body of Christ.

After seeing English children being sold as slaves in Rome, he sent 40 monks, including St. Augustine of Canterbury, from his own monastery to make “the Angles angels.” England owes her conversion to him. At a period when the invasion of the barbarian Lombards created a new situation in Europe, he played a great part in winning them for Christ. When Rome itself was under attack, he personally went to interview the Lombard King.

At the same time he watched equally over the holiness of the clergy and the maintenance of Church discipline, the temporal interests of his people of Rome and the spiritual interests of all Christendom. He removed unworthy priests from office, forbade taking money for many services, and emptied the papal treasury to ransom prisoners of the Lombards and to care for persecuted Jews and victims of plague and famine. These deeds and others made him, in the words of an antiphon in his office, “the Father of the City, the joy of the World.”

Gregory reformed the liturgy, and it still contains several of his most beautiful prayers. The name “Gregorian chant” recalls this great Pope’s work in the development of the Church’s music. His commentaries on Holy Scripture exercised a considerable influence on Christian thought in the Middle Ages. St. Gregory died on March 12, 604. His body lies at St. Peter’s in Rome.

The Tweny Second Sunday of Ordinary Time

“Rather, when you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind; blessed indeed will you be because of their inability to repay you.” LUKE 14:13 -14We have a difficult time with the concept of giving without expecting something in return. Even when we give to charity we often want something in return – a raffle ticket, a dinner, a chance to play golf or our name in print. Yet, as Christian Stewards, we need to remember that the true reward for our giving awaits us in heaven.
