Welcome Message

Foreword Welcome to Cloudbreak – the first fully operating mine of Fortescue Metals Group. Our Vision is to be the lowest cost, most profitable iron ore producer. To achieve this, operational excellence, technology and good project management remain central to our efforts to produce on spec iron ore for our customers. Fortescue has pioneered advances for our mining operations which comprise a mix of proven mining techniques and innovative world-first solutions. Innovation and good work practice are standard for Fortescue people. At Cloudbreak, safety is at the starting point of everything we do. We are committed to continuous improvement in this area. Constant awareness and effort are needed regardless of whether you are a visitor, a consultant, or a new employee or contractor. Through the induction process it is essential you become familiar with Fortescue’s safety standards and procedures. Other key priorities essential to the success of our mining operations relate to the preservation of the environment and of heritage sites. Fortescue has a clear long-term strategy; to find and produce high quality iron ore in a challenging environment by operating with excellence in a responsible way. Since project start up we have achieved many major milestones and we invite you to be a part of our future. Once again I welcome you to Cloudbreak. I hope that your time with us will be safe, productive and enjoyable. Paul Hallam Director, Operations

The Pilbara Welcome to Western Australia’s North West. The Pilbara region covers a total area of 507,896 square kilometres and shares its boundaries with the Indian Ocean and the Northern Territory. It is situated south of the Kimberley and comes under the local government areas of Ashburton, East Pilbara, Port Hedland and Roebourne. It is home to the Hamersley and Chichester Ranges, not forgetting one of the state’s most popular nature reserves, Karijini National Park. The Pilbara is an area rich in mineral deposits and natural beauty. Some of the rock formations are thought to be 2.8 million years old. It is also an area of archaeological significance with many Aboriginal heritage sites located throughout the region. There are 31 traditional indigenous landowner groups that have a connection to the region.

Fortescue Metals Group Limited Fortescue Metals Group was formed in 2003 when the company’s Pilbara mining operations were little more than a concept. It may have started out as an idea but through the dedication of our workforce, we quickly developed into a thriving mining company. Our operations went from construction to production in less than three years, which is impressive when you consider that we not only built a mine but a rail network and port facility. Our mining operations began in August 2007 and construction of the mine, rail and port infrastructure were officially completed in July 2008. Cloudbreak mine, located 150 kilometres north of Newman, is the primary site of Fortescue’s mining operations in the Pilbara with a secondary site under development at Christmas Creek. Our tenement areas span more than 57,500 square kilometres in the Pilbara. To date, we have identified almost 1.1 billion tonnes of iron ore reserves from less than 10% of our existing tenements, which means Fortescue will have a long term presence in the Pilbara.

Cloudbreak Cloudbreak is located in the Chichester Ranges near the Fortescue Marsh. It is also the traditional lands of Palkyu and Nyiyaparli peoples, with whom Fortescue has forged strong links that allows us to carry out our mining operations. We are dedicated to the protection of sites of Aboriginal significance and have forged strong links with traditional landowner groups to ensure that heritage sites are not disturbed during the course of our business. The site itself consists of an open cut mine, ore processing facility, de-sands plant, rail load out area, power substation, water treatment facility, drill and blast facilities, a maintenance workshop, lay down areas and bore fields.

Residents will be able to join in sporting activities and use the recreation facilities on site. Activity Co-ordinators organise regular social events which all residents are welcome at and encouraged to attend.
