Insects
Chitin – Material that makes up the exoskeleton.
Ecdysis – correct term for molting/shedding of exoskeleton
Elytra
front wings of beetles modified into wing cover.
Entomology
The study of insects
Haltere – modified 2nd pr of wings in flies.
LarvaFeeding stage in complete metamorphosis.
Instar
Each of the stages between molts.
Malpighian tubules
The excretory structures (“kidneys”) of the insect.
Metamorphosis
“Change in form” during growth.Complete –
separate stages (larva, pupa)More advancedAll the most successful orders have complete metamorphosis
Incomplete – young resemble adult
NymphImmature stage. Resembles the adult to some extent. A stage in incomplete metamorphosis.
Ovipositor
Egg laying structure (female only)Becomes sting in bees and wasps
Pheromones
Chemical messages, like hormones but released into the environment.Lock and key with receptors on the male antenna1 mile range!
Pupa
Transformation stage where the larva changes to an adult.Special terms like cocoon or chrysalis
Spiracles
Openings to the breathing tubes (tracheae) which support respiration in insects.
TympanumThe “ear” of the insect.
General Insect Characteristics3 body parts, head, thorax, abdomen6 legs, usually 2 pr. Wings - all from thoraxExoskeleton of chitinBreathe by spiracles/tracheaeWide variety of mouthpartsComplete or incomplete metamorphosisEstimates as high as 30 million species
Beetles - Coleoptera
Wings - 1st pr. modified into elytraAllow beetles to go places other insects can’t
Mouthparts - chewingMetamorphosis - complete - larva often called a grubOther - largest orderWeevils, scarabs, mealworms, etc.
Beetles - Coleoptera
Butterflies - Lepidoptera
Wings - Scale coveredMouthparts - SiphoningMetamorphosis – Complete, larva called caterpillarButterflies – wings upright, antenna w/ nobs, narrow body, day active.Moths – wings fold, feathery antenna, wide body, night active.Other – a “skipper” has characteristics of both
Butterflies - Lepidoptera
Ants & Bees - Hymenoptera
Wings - 2 pr. Linked, membrane wingedMouthparts - ChewingMetamorphosis - CompleteOther - Social, solitary or parasites, 3rd largestNarrow constriction between thorax and abdomenOvipositor modified into sting
Ants & Bees - Hymenoptera
Flies - Diptera
Wings - only 1 pr. 2nd pr - halteres, for balanceMouthparts - lapping or bitingMetamorphosis - complete, larva are maggots or wigglers (mosquitos)Other - disease carriers; 4th largestGnats, midges, punkies
Flies - Diptera
Dragonflies - Odonata
Wings - 2 pairMouthparts - chewingMetamorphosis - Incomplete, aquatic nymphs, rectal gills, jet propulsionOther – predators, even as nymphsDamselflies can fold wings against body, narrow abdomenLegs form a basket underneathFossil dragonflies wingspan, 2 ½ feet.
Dragonflies - Odonata
Grasshoppers - Orthoptera
Wings - 2 pr - straight - 1st leatheryMouthparts - ChewingMetamorphosis - IncompleteOther - roaches, mantids, grasshoppers, walking sticks, etc.
Grasshoppers - Orthoptera
Termites - Isoptera
Wings - 2 pr. Straight if presentMouthparts - chewingMetamorphosis - IncompleteOther - All social, flagellates are symbioticCastes include soldiers; 5,000,000 in a colony; huge part of tropical ecosystems; queen might live 50 years
