Discover Sicily-------

Home to some of the most beautiful coastline in the world, Sicily is a beach lover’s paradise. With nearly 1500km of shores bordering the Ionian, Mediterranean and Tyrrhenian seas, not to mention more than a dozen dazzling islands, the lush, volcanic region at the foot of Italy is a haven of rocky inlets, pristine sands and crystalline waters. Add in sumptuous architecture, mouthwatering cuisine and awe-inspiring landscapes and you have an all-round idyll.

Turn your gaze towards Taormina, an elegant resort on the east coast. The coastline here boasts some of Sicily’s most stunning scenery. There’s Capo Taormina, where Luc Besson’s cult movie The Big Blue was filmed; Isola Bella, a charming nature reserve also known as the Pearl of the Ionian Sea, and just round the headland, past the Blue Grotto, there’s the Bay of Mazzarò, a pinch-me-am-I-dreaming confection of azure and emerald water, pretty fishing boats and hidden coves teeming with fish. It’s here, on a private pebble beach surrounded by subtropical gardens, that you’ll find Belmond Villa Sant’Andrea. Pull up a lounger and soak up the view. A Warm Welcome-------

On a balcony bright with geraniums, bite into a succulent piece of fruit and gaze out over the calm azure bay. What shall you do today?

You could stroll down through our terraced gardens to the private beach. Settle into one of our luxurious cabanas and take dips in the cooling sea. Or embark on a boat trip around the stunning Sicilian coast.

Return for lunch by the pool – why not treat yourself to pizza with a glass of lush Etna red?

In the afternoon, enjoy a soothing alfresco massage looking out over the ocean. Or hop on our shuttle bus to the centre of Taormina. Browse bright ceramics and handcrafted jewellery, stop for a pistachio granita and admire the magnificent Greek Theatre.

Right by the ruins you’ll find our sister hotel, Belmond Grand Hotel Timeo. Perhaps pop in for a drink on the fabled Literary Terrace and soak up the majestic views of Mount Etna. Then return to our beachside restaurant, Oliviero, for a seafood feast by the lapping water.

Tomorrow? Maybe you’ll head up to the volcano or take a boat ride to the Aeolian Islands. Whatever you choose to do, returning to our elegant hotel, with the soothing sound of the ocean outside your window, will be like coming home.



A Beachside Escape

Walking through our doors feels like entering a private home. No wonder – our beautiful villa used to be one

An Englishman called Robert Trewhella built our waterfront villa in the early 1900s. A member of one of Cornwall’s most influential families, he had worked alongside the celebrated engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel. He moved to Italy after being commissioned by the Italian government to help develop the country’s infrastructure. Among his achievements, Trewhella designed and constructed a 70-mile route between Florence and Bologna through the rugged Apennines. In Sicily, he led the construction of the railways, including the Circumetnea Line that skirts Mount Etna. Sicily was also where he found love, marrying an Englishwoman he met there and building the elegant residence on Taormina Mare as their summer house.

Robert’s son, Alfred, transformed the villa into a hotel in the 1950s, when it became a hidden hideaway for glamorous guests. And so it remains to this day, but with the enhancements of a wellness centre, infinity pool, gorgeous new suites and stylish beach cabanas added since Belmond purchased the hotel in 2010. Trewhella’s delightful subtropical gardens remain a highlight, providing a verdant frame as you gaze towards the dazzling sea.
