STEEPEDIN HISTORY

Operatic soprano Dame Nellie Melba lays

the foundation stone of the Gramophone

Company factory in Hayes. The first ever

commercial record production begins on site in

the following year, and in 1909, the company’s

records were first produced under the name

‘His Master’s Voice’ (HMV) Records.

EMI is born when the Gramophone

Company merges with its competitor,

Colombia. Hayes is no longer just the home

of a pressing plant, it is a world leader of

technological innovation – with the world’s

first stereo recording being the sounds of

trains pulling in and out of Hayes station.

EMI acquires US record label Liberty/

United Artists, an acquisition that includes

the historic Blue Note Records. Their

roster at this time included jazz legends

Thelonious Monk and Miles Davis.

Following a storm of success for the

Gramophone Company, architects

Wallis, Gilbert & Partners are invited in

to design a pioneering new factory.

Their work produces three buildings,

each blessed with open-plan floors

and a pouring of natural light.

EMI dominates the music industry after

they sign The Beatles. Each and every

record by the band is mastered and

manufactured in Hayes. This success

continues into the next decade, as records

from bands like Queen and Pink Floyd

create the 1970s rock revolution.

EMI releases the debut album of

renowned heavy metal outfit Iron Maiden,

which would peak at number four on

the UK Albums Chart and help the

band achieve further recognition across

mainland Europe. The band still remains

a part of EMI’s portfolio today.

BLUENOTE APARTMENTS IS IMMERSED WITHIN DECADES OF MUSIC HISTORY, WHERE SOME OF THE

WORLD’S BIGGEST ACTS WERE BORN.

EMI completes the purchase of the Virgin

Music Group, which at this time was the

largest independent music company on

the planet. Its roster included the legendary

Rolling Stones.

EMI launches the first Internet video single,

Lenny Kravitz’s Dig. In 2002, EMI became

the first major music company to release

music digitally at the same time it hits

the radio.

EMI’s online footprint begins to take

shape, launching their first websites in

1993 and 1994. In 1999, EMI became the

first company to release a digital album

download, which was David Bowie’s Hours.

The factory is acquired by U+I and

renamed The Old Vinyl Factory -

in honour of its roots - marking

a new chapter for Hayes.

The 'factory city' that revolutionised the

music industry is firmly back in demand and

has evolved into a desirable West London

site. Containing hundreds of homes, The

Old Vinyl Factory and surrounding area

is bringing in a new generation of people

to live, work and play in Hayes.
