Absences And Tardiness
• Regular school attendance and being on time are critical to the learning process. When your child is absent, he misses valuable instruction time.
• Please send a written note of explanation whenever your child is absent. Students are permitted to make up work missed during lawful absences.
Absences And TardinessContinued
• State law requires us to record each absence as lawful or unlawful.
• Lawful absences include illness and doctor appointments.
• Unlawful absences include out-of-town trips, missing the bus, and family vacations.

Classroom Rules
• Each student has his own classroom rulebook, which will be kept in your child’s desk.
• Together as a class we have reviewed, modeled, and included visuals in order to help us remember the rules.
• We recognize that we must make a daily effort to exemplify our best behavior in accordance with these rules.
Stoplight Behavior Management System• The stop light tree in the front of the room shows a
close pin with each child’s name.
• Everyone begins each day with “green for go” showing.
• If a class rule is broken, the color changes to yellow; which is a warning. If the student regains focus and corrects the problem at hand, they have the opportunity to move back to green again.
Stoplight Behavior Management System
Continued
• The color red is reserved for very severe discipline problems. Such behavior will usually result in a letter or a phone call home.
• I will also use the stoplight system to reward students who behave appropriately.

Daily Communication
• Each student has his own homework binder with a planner inside. Please check this daily. Your child will write to you everyday to inform you of their daily progress. Please take a few minutes to read over their comments and discuss them with your child.
• If there are no problem behaviors, reward your child for a super day at school! If there are problems, please discuss with your child ways of improving those behaviors in the future.
Daily CommunicationContinued
• This piece of paper will need to be signed and returned the following day. Your child will write to you everyday, so don’t except any excuses from your child not having a daily progress report. If I do not receive the paper with your signature, I will call you to be sure you have seen your child’s progress for the previous day. When we work together, these daily progress reports will be extremely effective.
• Each student has his own communication folder with a copybook inside. I will send all test papers home in the communication folder. Please sign and return your child’s test papers the following day. Please use the copybook inside the folder to communicate any necessary information with me.

Homework And Classwork
• I believe that homework is necessary for practicing skills that have been learned or for enriching the classroom experience. In many cases, homework is simply classwork that was not finished. I try to give ample time in class for the completion of most assignments, but some students work more slowly than others and must complete the assignment at home.
Homework and Classwork Cont.
• In order to help the students get their homework assignments done, each student will take home a homework binder every night. They will write their assignments in a school planner that will be located within the binder. After they complete an assignment, it should be checked off as completed. I encourage you to check your child’s homework binder every night and to sign their planner.
Homework and Classwork Cont.
• I expect all homework and classwork to be turned in on time. As a general rule, late assignments will not be accepted or graded. However, your students will have the opportunity to earn “homework passes” throughout the year. A homework pass can be used in place of some assignments, or may be used to extend an assignment’s due date (one day per pass).
• I will encourage the students to save their homework passes in case they forget and assignment or have a legitimate situation that prevents them from completing their work. Students will not be allowed to call home if they forget their work. Organization is the key to success!
Homework and Classwork Cont.
• Students will be given a homework grade based on whether or not homework is completed. Students who complete all assignments will receive a “100” to average into their other grades for that subject. Those who do not complete all assignments will be graded accordingly. Homework grades will count toward each marking period.
Cooperative Learning
• I wholeheartedly believe in cooperative learning in the classroom. I have placed my students in mixed ability groups so that they may help each other during the learning process. Research has shown that all students do better when they are allowed to discuss and defend their ideas as they learn. Working in small groups also helps students learn valuable social skills they will need throughout life.
Cooperative Learning
Cont.• Parents are often concerned about
grades in the cooperative learning classroom. I want to assure parents that all grades come from individual assignments and tests. No student’s grade will be raised or lowered based on the performance of others in the group.
Learning Choice Time
• A very important aspect of my program is the learning centers that can be found within the room. I call this program “Learning Choice Time” because the students are allowed to choose activities that interest them. Some of the activities will be required but many are optional. Students may watch a filmstrip, do a science experiment, play a math skill game, or chose from a menu of other activities!
Classroom Library
• Within the room, there is a small classroom library that will hopefully continue to grow throughout the year. The students will be encouraged to use the materials found there as resources for classroom assignments and for free reading time.
Enrichment Programs
• Each day your child will be participating in various enrichment programs.
• Throughout each week, the children will be participating in art, computers, gym, dance, music, character counts, and health.
• I will also be adding relaxation and stretching activities in the daily class schedule.
