We are pleased to devote our cover feature story to the association’s programs that recognize the outstanding individuals and companies doing amazing things in the auto care industry.
IS there such a thing as giving too many awards and recognitions? I don’t think so. Neither do these famous persons.
“People work for money but go the extra mile for recognition, praise and reward.” – Dale Carnegie
“In the arena of human life the honors and rewards fall to those who show their good qualities in action.” – Aristotle
“Don’t worry when you are not recognized, but strive to be worthy of recognition.” – Abraham Lincoln
We are pleased to devote our cover feature story to the association’s programs that recognize the outstanding individuals and companies doing amazing things in the auto care industry. Public recognition is proven to lead to increased customer and employee loyalty and serves to inspire greatness and innovation. I recently read on Entrepreneur.com that the reason 81 percent of employees quit their jobs is because they don’t receive enough recognition. The concepts of recognition and praise are two critical components for creating positive emotions in organizations, according to Gallup in their survey of more than 4 million employees worldwide on this topic. Their latest analysis, which includes more than 10,000 business units and over 30 industries, has found that individuals who receive regular recognition and praise:
 Increase their individual productivity,
 Increase engagement among their colleagues,
Are more likely to stay with their organization,
Receive higher loyalty and satisfaction scores from customers, and
Have better safety records and fewer accidents on the job.
We are trying to do our part by providing opportunities to help our members bring much-deserved recognition to their organization and their employees.

THE “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign, conducted by the Car Care Council, promotes the benefits of regular vehicle service and repair. With billions of dollars of unperformed vehicle maintenance on the line, encouraging motorists to keep their vehicles longer through routine auto care is a win-win for motorists and our industry. Industry members can help “pump up the volume” by encouraging motorists to maintain their vehicles for safety, dependability and
pride of ownership and keeping employees, customers and other auto care professionals informed. It’s easy to participate. By simply integrating “Be Car Care Aware” messaging into your company’s day-to-day communications, you can join the movement and become an active auto care advocate. Let’s take your website as an example. Why not add a “We Support Be Car Care Aware” logo with a link to www.carcare.org? Articles, infographics and other images like those promoting
National Car Care Month and Fall Car Care Month can be easily downloaded and posted to your website. Is your company active on social media? Visit the council on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram to share and retweet news, videos and other helpful information such as #MaintenanceMondays tips. Are your colleagues and employees actively maintaining their own vehicles? Why not provide each of them with the council’s popular 80-page Car Care Guide and encourage them to sign up for the free personalized service schedule and email reminder service on the council’s website? Do you have customers that would like to drive more traffic to their shops and stores? Encourage them to sign up for the monthly e-Brief and share the link to the council’s Industry Tool Box. They will find helpful information about how to conduct a business-building car care event in their local community. Have questions about the “Be Car Care Aware” campaign and how you can get involved? Visit www.carcare.org or contact the Car Care Council at [email protected] or 240-333-1088.

“We don’t sell tires and automotive service. We sell safety and peace of mind.”
PAMELA GATTO
IN recognition of her long-term involvement and inspiration to women in the auto care industry, Pamela Gatto, president and owner, Gatto’s Tires and Auto Service, was named the 2015 Car Care Council Women’s Board Female Shop Owner of the Year. “I am honored. I’m always surprised when someone thinks I have something to offer to others in the industry,” said Gatto. Gatto got her start in the industry under the tutelage of her father who founded the family business. “My dad asked me to help him for two weeks so he wouldn’t have to hire in haste, and we found that we loved working together,” said Gatto. Gatto became president in 1994 and now Gatto’s Tires and Auto Service has six locations in Brevard County, Fla. In 1997, Gatto made history as the first female president of the Tire Association of North America, now the Tire Industry Association. She is also one of only three women inducted into the Tire Industry Hall of Fame, and her shop was honored as Tire Review Magazine’s Top Shop Award in 2007.
Gatto is equally recognized for her dedication to community involvement, most recently winning the 2014 Central Florida Humanitarian award. She is highly involved in many organizations including serving as chairman of the Brevard Workforce Development Board, Brevard Health Alliance and the Holmes Regional Medical Center. She has also served as president of the Junior League of South Brevard and the Brevard Museum of Art and Science Board. “We have a few big issues facing the auto care industry today,” said Gatto. “Technological advances on vehicles, proliferation of tire sizes and types, lack of qualified workforce and too much competition affect us all.” “Pamela is an inspiration to me and the many female shop owners across the country,” said Amy Mattinat, president, Car Care Council Women’s Board and owner, Auto Craftsmen, Montpelier, Vt. “This award is truly a well-deserved tribute to her leadership abilities and commitment to the advancement of women within the auto care and tire industry.”

GOVERNMENTAFFAIRS
UPDATE: COPPER-FREE BRAKES
IN 2015, the Auto Care Association signed a national memorandum of understanding (MOU) to signal that the industry was willing to move toward replacement brake pads that virtually eliminate copper and other elements. States like Washington and California had already enacted laws to phase out copper and the industry wanted to avoid a state patchwork of laws that could gridlock brake sales. By basing the MOU on the law passed in Washington state in 2010, manufacturers were able to transition the work they had done for mandatory compliance into a national, voluntary program. Now that the MOU is experiencing its one-year anniversary, it is time to check in with what has changed for replacement brake pads across the supply chain and what is still yet to come.
Washington Status The Washington law requires manufacturers to reduce several friction elements in brakes, not just copper. The law specifically requires that items such as asbestos must be at levels so low, they are nearly zero. While asbestos had already been eliminated in most replacement brake pads, the new law meant that manufacturers
had to reformulate, test and register compliant products with a third party. That program has been successful to this point in the sense that, according to Brake Manufacturers Council (BMC) President, Walt Britland, “Over 5,400 product identities have been registered with the program registrar, NSF International. All BMC members engaged in the manufacture of friction products are among the 117 companies worldwide who have registered their products thus far.” With that stage behind the industry, brake manufacturers are now focusing on the next stages of testing and reformulation aimed at meeting future reduction requirements for copper. Under the Washington law, copper must be reduced to 5 percent by 2021 and could be required to be reduced to .5 percent by 2025.
California Status While Washington took the first steps in creating elemental reductions in brake pads, California has been much slower to act. Having already passed a law that differs from Washington state, in deadlines and reporting
Under the Washington law, copper must be reduced to 5 percent by 2021 and could be required to be reduced to .5 percent by 2025.
requirements only, California just recently released the draft the regulatory rules that will outline enforcement of their law. The year 2016 is expected to be when manufacturers, retailers and installers finally know exactly what will be expected of them.
The Future of Copper The most significant changes for brake friction materials are likely to face the industry when California
and likely Washington state will impose a .5 percent copper content limit in 2025. Manufacturers are seeking new friction materials that replace copper, but at this point it is unknown what that solution will be. Even given the challenge of costly research and reformulation to meet these future requirements, Britland sees the MOU as a positive for the industry. “The memorandum of understanding (MOU) serves a great purpose for both the automotive industry and the states in which we operate.” For more information, contact Sheila Andrews at [email protected], or call 301-654-6664.
What to Look for on a Compliant Brake Pad
The LeafMark logo was developed to indicate compliance with new greener materials laws. Look for the image on brake pad packaging now.
Product Edge Codes have and will change. To comply with Washington, the standard for these manufacturer-required markings was updated in 2012. SAE J866 now includes a letter and date indicator for copper content:
A: copper content greater than 5.0%
B: copper content greater than 0.5% up to 5.0%
N: less than 0.5% copper content These codes are being used sparingly now, but when future requirements for reduced copper content become active, they will be common on all compliant brakes nationwide.

RON APARICIO
BATTING A THOUSAND FOR THE INDUSTRY
AFTER studying child development and teaching while on a baseball scholarship at California State University-Chico, Impact Award winner Ron Aparicio was “chosen” by the auto care industry. “At age 26, I was recruited by a family friend who owned an aftermarket company,” said Aparicio. “Once I got into the business and understood the opportunities and relationship dynam-ics within our industry, I was hooked.” It is these relationships that Aparicio feels are the most valu-able part of working in auto care. “In a world of email, text and instant gratification, our industry still truly values relationships,” he said. “Work-ing as partners, trusting each other, and also getting to know each other on a personal level is huge. I feel this is a key element of our industry. I have made lifelong friends and experienced things that I would have never have seen without the auto care industry.” In his current role at Mevotech, Aparicio helps guide the sales activities of the company and provides full sup-port for its team of representatives and customers. As a young professional, Aparicio looks to his customers and veteran industry leaders for inspiration. “I have always respected our cus-tomers and their time,” said Aparicio. “They are successful business owners
and have seen changes constantly in this industry. History always repeats itself, and my job was to listen and learn from the vast experience in front of me. Once I felt I understood ‘what kept that person up at night,’ I had the oppor-tunity to try and formulate a solution for them, and in turn start building a partnership. That meant insuring I was always well prepared. We only have one reputation in this industry, and I wanted to be sure to be viewed as a key supplier because of the knowl-edge I presented to the customer.” Looking toward the future, Apari-cio wants to continue learning and growing with Mevotech. “I work for an amazing company, with amaz-ing people supporting our efforts. My management role is continuing to evolve with Mevotech, and I see myself as a part of this incredible team for many years to come.” If not in the industry, Aparicio would be a teacher and high school baseball coach. But right now, this young leader will continue to devote his passion and energy to hitting home runs for auto care. “This is a great place to work, and I truly see the younger people in our industry bringing new enthusiasm and viewpoints to the industry.”

MEET A STAFFER
20 AUTO CARE INSIDER | VOL. 99
PAUL Fiore was the proud owner of a neighborhood auto repair facility for 27 years in Laurel, Md. before he began his lobbying career in Annapolis on behalf of the state service station and automotive repair association. From there, Paul went to work as a lobbyist for national groups, including the Service Station Dealers of America (SSDA) and the Tire Industry Association (TIA), where he met Aaron Lowe, senior vice president, regulatory and government affairs, Auto Care Association. “I’ve known Aaron from my lobbying career at other associations for longer than either of us cares to discuss,” he said. Now at the Auto Care Association for five years, Paul has continued his lobbying career in the association’s government affairs department, which serves as the legislative and regulatory advocate for the membership at the federal level in Congress, and with regulatory agencies like EPA and NHTSA. “I love knowing that we really do a great job of representing the varied interests of our members at a professional level they can be proud of,” Paul said. “It’s important to me that I really do look out for thousands of family-owned small businesses.” Born in Buffalo, N.Y., Paul moved with his family to Maryland when
he was 14, where he had his first exposure to life in the nation’s capital. “As a young adult in the sixties, living in the Washington, D.C. area was a fascinating experience,” Paul said. “And in the work world, I was very fortunate to participate in travel for oil company advisory councils, and was also an advisory board member for many years of the local county cultural arts center.” Today, Paul is part of the association’s government affairs department, which works on behalf of the industry every day for aftermarket-positive legislation and policies. “With the growth of our government affairs efforts comes the greater recognition of the association on Capitol Hill,” he said. As far as his role in these efforts, Paul counts his proudest professional accomplishment as “having played a small part in the final passage of the Motor Vehicle Owners’ Right to Repair Act.” Paul said his proudest personal accomplishment, however, is, “Hands down, my children and grandchildren. Such a cliché, but it’s the absolute truth.” In addition, Paul and his wife Debbi love to cook for and entertain family and friends, try to see one or two live music shows a month and “…follow the D.C. restaurant scene with the enthusiasm most people devote to sports.”
