Milton High School {2020-2021 Syllabus}
WelcometoAPUnitedStatesHistory(APUSH).ThepurposeofthiscourseistoprovideahistoryoftheAmericanpeoplethroughdiscussionofthemescoveringthecolonialperiodtothepresent,emphasizingthedevelopmentandadoptionoftheConstitution,themajoreventsresultinginthedemocratizationofAmericansociety,thesectionalstruggleoverthenatureofAmerica’sidentity,Reconstruction,economicgrowthinthepost-CivilWaryears,andreformmovementsconcerningsocialandeconomicinstitutions.ThecontentshallalsoincludethecontinuityoftheAmericanreformtradition,itsculminationinthepoliticsofthedepressionandpost-WorldWarIIyears,America’srisetoapositionofworldpower,thedomesticandinternationalresultsofAmericanparticipationinthetwoworldwarsandacontinuingColdWar.Thecoursewilltracethesethemesthroughouttheyear,emphasizingthewaysinwhichtheyareinterconnectedandexaminingthewaysinwhicheachhelpstoshapechangeovertime.Pleasebemindfulthatthiscourseisrigorousandyouwillhavehomeworkalmosteverynight.AP exam = Thursday, May 6, 2021 @ 8 AM.

Do I need computer access? Information to be covered…BasedontheCollegeBoardestablishedcurriculumforthiscourse,studentswillstudyninespecificperiodsofUnitedStateshistory,beginningin1491andcontinuingthroughthepresent,analyzingeachperiodforspecificcontentinformation.
Period Packets:StudentwillreceiveaPeriodPacketforeachperiodofstudyassignedbyCollegeBoard(totalof9).Eachpacketwillhaveacalendarincluded(forthedatesthatwewillbestudyingthatperiod),vocabularyforthechaptersbeingcovered,graphicorganizers,andancillaryreadingsforannotation.Packetswillbeworth50totalpoints(equaltoanessayormultiple-choicetest)fortheseperiodsofstudy.

Writing Assessments/Assignments: 60%ofyourAPscoreisgarneredfromthreedifferentwrittenassignments:threeshortresponsequestions(SAQ),oneDocumentBasedQuestion(DBQ),andoneLongEssayQuestion(LEQ).Eachcomponentisspecificallytimed,andwillrequireyoutoapplyanalyticalskillsinashortperiodoftime.Studentswillbeassignedseveraltypesofwritingassessmentsand/orthesiswritingassignmentstopreparefortheexam.
Why do I have to take an AP exam AND a Semester Exam? ATTENDANCEandGRADES!Studentswhomiss10ormoredaysinasemestergradingperiodarerequiredtotakeandpassthesemesterexam.SinceAPExamscoresareNOTavailableuntilJuly,youarerequiredtotakeasemesterexamthatwillcountas20%ofyouroverallgrade.
Grading and Evaluation:Studentswillbegradedusingthefollowingpercentageseachnineweeks.Please note:throughouttheyear,therewillbeassignmentsmadeavailabletoallstudentsat teacher discretionthatcancountasan“extracreditassignment.”Late work is not accepted.
