CLASS RULES & CONSEQUENCES
Rules are the directions and boundaries all
students must abide by so that a uniform behavior
and level of learning may be achieved. Rules
keep us & the animals safe.
Consequences are what result when you abide
by or break a rule – positive or negative – every
action results in a consequence.
A consequence is the result of YOUR chosen
action. Positive means you are on the road to
success and will benefit from what is to be
learned. Negative consequences result in a
penalty.
DRESS CODELong pants, ROP T-shirts and closed toed shoes (no open backs) must
be worn AT ALL TIMES WHILE AT THE SHELTER. No flip flops,
sandals, slippers, mules, tank tops, halter tops, muscle shirts, bare
midriffs or plunging necklines. Hoods are not to be worn on the head
and dangling jewelry is not permitted. This is for your safety and is
appropriate attire for working around animals.
Positive Consequence – You will participate in the day’s learning and
gain work experience.
Negative Consequence – You will be asked to leave (or call you parent
to pick you up) and miss the work and/or learning experience.

deserve at all times.
Face the speaker, listen attentively and raise your hand
waiting to be called on before you speak.
Please and thank you are appreciated.
Use of profanity will not be tolerated.

CLASS PROCEDURES
Procedures are a part of life.
They are the routine for Animal Care Class.
ENTERING & LEAVING CLASS Animal Care class is held in a place of business (the Animal Shelter) so you must act
professional at all times.
Enter quietly and sign-in (as if you are punching a time clock!) at the check-in table in
the classroom.
Pick-up class hand-outs, place homework in the “Assignments” file and go to your
seat to begin working.
During class, raise one (1) finger if you have a question or two (2) fingers to be
dismissed to the restroom or for water. Most classes have a break halfway through,
so a dismissal should be an urgent need only.
At the end of class, the instructor will dismiss you when the lesson is done and the
room is neat. Please make sure you are picked up promptly at 6:00pm – there is
no one available to wait for you!
If you arrive late, sign-in quietly, pick-up your hand-outs and go to your seat. Any
notes or discussion about your tardiness should be discussed with the instructor at
the half-way break.
ABSENCESClasses missed are only excused if the instructor or ROP Office receives a note or
phone call from a parent, doctor or other authority figure the day of the class meeting.
Parents may be called to verify the absence if a note is questionable. On Sundays
OJT, you MUST contact instructor prior to 8:00am or absence is UNEXCUSED & it
will affect your grade. This is a job you are being paid for in 5 HS credits!
If you are absent, it is up to YOU to find out from a student or email the instructor as to
what work you missed and turn it in when due.
Make-up work will only be accepted if the absence is excused.
Student must make arrangements by contacting the instructor, to take a missed test
prior to the next class meeting.
Vacations and meetings are not considered excused absences.
After 2nd excused absence, any other miss requires a doctor’s note. Plan ahead if you
know you must miss class sometime this semester!
MATERIALS
You are responsible for bringing the following items to every class:
• Folder or binder containing all handouts given, tests & reports and this
handbook and notebook paper in your binder on which to take notes.
• Separate spiral notebook or folder that is your OJT JOURNAL.
• Two pens or pencils and a highlighter; no pencil sharpener in this room.
• Homework
AGENDA
An Agenda will be provided each class period detailing the day’s Learning Objective,
schedule of activities, homework and date of next class. The agenda should be
picked-up and read immediately after signing-in and going to your seat, and it should
remain in your notebook throughout the semester along with notes taken for that
class.
GET GOING ACTIVITY
Upon entering the classroom, you will pick up an Agenda with the Get Going Activity
listed on it. This activity will also be displayed via Power Point as you enter the
classroom. You have 15 minutes (or longer if you arrive early) to complete the task
before class instruction begins. This is required work although you will not always
receive a letter grade for it. Sometimes it will be preparation for the day’s lesson;
other times a follow-up to something you have already learned.
TURNING IN ASSIGNMENTS
Messy and torn spiral edges on paper will result in a minus 10 on any assignment.
This is a career-oriented class preparing you ready for the working world. You are
expected to turn in work neatly as you would to an employer – typed when not actually
done in the classroom.
All papers must include the following information in the upper right hand corner:
Last Name, First Name
Date
Title of Assignment
At the beginning of class or when the assignment is completed during class, please
place finished work in the “Assignments” file.

GRADES Grades will be given for tests and quizzes, journal writing, special projects & hands-
on activities which will result in your final grade.
A = 90% - 100%
B = 80% - 89%
C = 70% - 79%
D = 60% - 69%
F = 68% and below
Students receiving a “C” or below at any time during the semester should
schedule an appointment with the instructor for extra help.
Certificates are handed out at the end of the semester to students who successfully
achieve the class learning objectives…75% and higher.
Extra Credit will be given for Enrichment Activities completed. These will be
mentioned throughout the semester and listed on the class website.
STUDY GROUPS
Various activities will be performed in Study Groups – groups of two, three or more
students learning and discussing together.
Instructor will assign groups; do not change your group.
Each student must contribute as a “group” grade will be given.
Select a group Moderator who will lead the group making sure assignment is followed
to completion. Select a group Scribe to take notes and create any written portion of
the assignment. Involve all members of your group. If there is a problem, have the
Moderator speak with the instructor.
FINISHING EARLY
When you complete an assignment or test, pick an item off the Enrichment List for
additional learning until your classmates have all completed the assignment. The
Enrichment List should have been copied into your journal the first day of class but is
also posted on the bulletin board.
Do not check text messages, speak with friends or do something not pertaining to this
class. You are here to learn about animals and how to fit into the working world. Take
every opportunity to do so! The only time you may do these things is during a break or
before 3:30pm.
EXTRA CREDIT
• Many options for extra credit are presented throughout the semester (some are already up on the class website), but you are always able to suggest something you would like to do for the instructor’s approval.
• Extra Credit must be exceptional – should be something that takes at 3-4 hours of work or more to research to complete.
ON-THE-JOB TRAININGYou must participate in 2 ½ hours of On-The-Job Training each week.
Keep a journal of what you did to show instructor!
Check-in with Supervisor immediately upon arrival. Do not arrive late – this is a job and
the staff and animals are depending on you!
If you are ill or will not be there, phone your instructor at least an hour PRIOR to your
call time. Don’t text, email or call after class.
Wear appropriate attire. Work enthusiastically, show initiative and take pride in a
job well done through-out your entire shift honoring all Class & Shelter Rules.
If you are unsure of ANYTHING…ASK! Do not work with an animal you are
uncomfortable with or perform a task that you are not confident in doing.
SAFETY
For your safety and that of your co-workers and the animals:
Report all bites and scratches immediately to your instructor/supervisor and
obtain necessary medical assistance.
Read all Material Safety Data Sheets posted near the kitchen and abide by the
proper use of chemicals.
Know procedure for evacuating the shelter (discussed first day of class) should
the need arise. Info is posted in hallway near front desk.
I wish you a DOGGONE GRRRReat experience learning how to care for animals. I am sure
you will find that animals give you so much in return for your care and will enrich each of
your lives in so many ways. I look forward to seeing them make you smile as you become
an awesome Animal Care Giver this semester!
