QUESTIONS FOR PARSHAS TOLDOS
BY: THE RAV
First Aliyah: (25:25-26) Who named Esav? Who named Yaakov?
Second Aliyah: (26:12) Shouldn’t the words “Hashem blessed him”
appear earlier in this pasuk?
Third Aliyah: Why didn’t Yitzchak protest when he was being mistreated
by the Philistines?
Fourth Aliyah: (26:29) What do the words “Ata ‘Ata” mean?
Fifth Aliyah: Why didn’t Rivkah just tell Yitzchak directly that Esav
shouldn’t get the blessings?
Sixth Aliyah: (26:37) Why was Yitzchak so reluctant to bless Esav once
he discovered that he had blessed Yaakov?
Seventh Aliyah: (28:5) Why is Lavan described as the “brother of Rivkah,
who in turn was the mother Yaakov and Esav” – isn’t that obvious?!
Weekly Halachah
R’ Mordechai Torczyner - [email protected]
Does an onein or avel light Chanukah candles?
An onein [one whose immediate relative has passed away,
and has not been buried] is not obligated to light Chanukah
candles. However, halachic authorities are concerned that
people passing the onein's home may not know about the
death, and they might think that he is flouting the mitzvah of
lighting Chanukah candles. Further, lighting Chanukah
candles publicizes the miracles of Chanukah. Therefore, an
onein should make sure that someone lights in the home;
there are conflicting views on whether he should respond
Amen to their berachah. If no one else can light, then the
onein should light, albeit without a berachah.
An avel sitting shivah lights Chanukah candles and recites all
of the berachot, including Shehechiyanu. However, the avel
should not light the shul chanukiah on the first night of
Chanukah.
