Becoming A Classroom Family

Service Learning ProjectAs second graders, our service learning project ties in perfectly to our science units. We will be visiting Avery Heights later this year and teaching the residents about what we do here at ESM. We will also be bringing them potted plants as gifts!Service Learning Project

Service Learning Project

What is phenology?Phenology:study of how things change with the seasons.

PhenologyThe second graders are lucky enough to be studying and observing how leaves changes thought the seasons. Feel free to look out side the rooms as autumn continues to see how our tree is changing. Some of the colors we may possible observe on your leaves.

8Climate change is how we describe BIG changes in the temperature, and other things that are part of what we think about when we think of weather. A small change in the temperature can have big effects in nature. What does it mean to plants, and animals when we go from cold, to freezing?

If you are thinking about how to get ready to go outside, what do you want to know about the weather?

Temp - Wind. How do we describe wind? (breezy, urricane)- rain or snow

For plants and animals, small differences in these thiongs can be very important. The fern can grow, the tree cant. The spider can catch prey; it wouldnt if it had turned to ice.Science TopicsWe will be focusing on 4 main topics in science this year. They are matter, soils, plants, and nutrition. The next few slides will give you a bit more information on each topic. MatterSolids, liquids, and gases oh my! We have a great unit on matter here in second grade. Students will be learning about the different properties of each state of matter as well as doing numerous hands on inquiries to help guide our learning. We cant wait for your child to share all their learning.

SoilsThe unit on soils is extremely exciting! We work often with Mr. Cappaert in the vivarium and will be using the gardens for observations. This unit involves looking at different components of soils and how they settle. We also discuss what makes one soil more healthy than another soil. Be prepared to have a lot of hands on experiences!

Soils

PlantsOur unit on plants follows directly after we learn about soils and as spring emerges. This is perfect timing for two reasons. The first being that we have just studied soils and we can now take this knowledge on how a plant can survive. The second reason being its a perfect time to do some planting and observing of our own. Be sure to check back and see the amazing garden we will make this year!

Plants

Nutrition

This year we will be lucky enough to be working with Madie from the Food Corps. She will be helping push in with our curriculum and doing a few short lessons during our second grade snack time to help encourage healthy eating and healthy food choices.Nutrition

Science Fair

The science fair is always a fun time of year for all. Its a time when we can think outside of the box and do something that really relates to one of our wonders. In second grade, we do a class project. enVisions MathSecond grade has multiple topics regarding math. We will venture to every concept from understanding addition and subtraction to geometry to place value to measurement to money. This year, fact fluency is extremely important. Please be sure to work on your childs addition and subtraction fluency each and every day!

Story Town ReadingStory Town is the reading program we will be following in second grade. We work very hard as teachers to make sure that we differentiate these levels for each child to be pushed to their full potential. The program offers a very robust vocabulary as well as working on all the skills necessary for the students to do well on the DRA assessment. We also break the whole group reading up into small groups for an even more individualized approach at meeting each childs needs.

CelebrationHeres to an amazing year together!Thank you in advance for all you will do to help encourage and support your childs learning this school year!
