Regular 7:30 am Mass MLK, Jr. Day

January 21, 2019

My dear Parishioners, This third weekend in January belongs to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This weekend we honor his memory and recall words he uttered during his all-too-brief life that stir us still. His majestic “I have a dream” speech delivered in 1963 from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial has certainly both thrilled and challenged untold numbers of people not only here in the United States but around the world. Yet, those who have been studying the life and influence of Dr. King tell us that a speech he delivered four years later at the Riverside Church in New York City, entitled :Beyond Vietnam,” was, in the words of Pulitzer Prize winner Viet Thanh Nguyen, “the more insightful one.” The bigger dream, so to speak. As he entered more deeply into his prophetic calling, his vision broadened to include all the world’s people, especially those, such as the Vietnamese civilians, who were so brutally vic-timized by what he called the “giant triplets of racism, ex-treme materialism and militarism.” Like the Old Testament prophets, Martin Luther King, Jr. became a threat to the powerful. To our shame as Ameri-cans, we must acknowledge that political leaders of our country began to question his connections and his motives. The FBI kept him under steady surveillance, and his popular-ity declined appreciably especially when, in 1968, he an-nounced his plans for a Poor People’s Campaign that would march on Washington. His martyrdom in Memphis on April 4th that same year effectively removed him from the scene and other heartbroken civil rights leaders took up the mantle but it wasn't the same. The United States today, leaders and citizens, desperately needs to hear the voice of our prophet; his warning and his challenge. May the Spirit who guided him impel each of us to intensify the struggle to bring the full dream to fruition! —Fr. Jerome, C.P.

“Mujer, ahí tienes a tu hijo; hijo, ahí tienes a tu madre.”
