“Are you envious because I am generous?” The landowner in today’s Gospel parable surprised everyone. Contrary to standard practice, he paid all of his laborers the same wage, regardless of how many hours they had worked! Of course this was a very pleasant surprise for those who had begun their job late in the day. And, understandably, it was something of a disappointment for those who had toiled since the morning. From their perspective, they should have gotten more than the others. But in

fact the landowner was not cheating anyone; he was simply being especially generous with the latecomers. This story would have had a special meaning for the Jewish audience listening to Jesus. They, the Chosen People, were the laborers who had started at 9:00 am. They belonged to the group with a long history of worshipping the true God. Non-Jewish Gentiles, on the other hand, had appeared late in the game. Jesus was making the point that just because he would offer the same salvation and mercy to everyone, there should be no reason for the Jews to complain. They had received their promised Messiah; so what if, in God’s mercy, he allowed others who had not waited so long to be saved as well? Divine generosity is not meant to be a cause for jealousy. Now, we may feel removed from the concerns of those Jews. But the basic lesson remains relevant: that we ought to appreciate God’s generosity, even when it reaches to those whom we may not expect God to forgive. Those who have long been faithful, for example, might think they deserve more benefits than sinners who repent late in life. But instead, we should all rejoice to see God’s mercy extended to everyone, no matter when they joined the fold.

Grace with lines inspired by the Readings for September 24, 25th Sunday of Ordinary Time Leader: Lord Jesus, we thank you for your Word. You teach us, through parables, to change the way we envision the world. (Matt. 20:10-15) All: May your Word, guide our thoughts and actions towards others, rejoicing in their blessings. OR Leader: Lord Jesus, we thank you for your Word. Jesus tells us “the first will be last and the last first.” (Matt. 20:16) All: May we strive to live humbly, thankful for our many blessings.

Living in the Word of God Archbishop Smith issued an important Pastoral Letter this past Thursday September 14, the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. He details the 5 Year program to help develop our Catholic Faith. You can view the letter on the Archdiocese website at www.caedm.ca and links will be provided on the St. Matthew’s website. If you don’t have Internet access please contact the Parish Office and we can provide you with a copy. We encourage you to take a few minutes to read this letter.

Living in the Word of God—An Excerpt from the Pastoral Letter of Archbishop Smith, September 14, 2017—Living in the Word Baptism makes us missionary disciples, endowed with many gifts and talents for the service of others in the name of the Lord. If a person is baptized in infancy as I was, it is very easy to take for granted the wondrous gift bestowed by that sacrament. Pope Francis wants us to be fully aware of what it means to be baptized, to rejoice in the gift, and to embrace completely the Christian way of living. (Archbishop Smith, Pastoral Letter, September 14, 2017)
