Cafes partnering with community health to make a difference. For most of us, catching-up with friends at a café is an enjoyable experience. But for some members of our community, that simple public outing can be an uncomfortable, anxious and even scary concept. Individuals with low incomes, limited education, who suffer from mental illness, or are disadvantaged in other ways, are far less likely to be involved in the social activities most people take for granted. These socially isolated individuals typically have poorer health. Obviously that’s not fair. So, what’s being done about it?

The team at Inner South Community Health (ISCH) have developed a clever café meals program, ‘Social Spoons’, which partners with local cafes to tackle the issue head-on. There are two groups, Gold and Silver.

Gold Spoon cafes partner with ISCH as providers of meals which are currently subsidised by grants from the Cities of Port Phillip and Stonnington. The subsidised meals are provided for Social Spoons Program members as an incentive to dine with others, enjoy a meal and to be linked into other community activities. 03

Silver Spoon cafes are nominated annually by the community to be formally recognised as welcoming and socially inclusive. Both Gold and Silver cafes are awarded with Social Spoons window stickers. The stickers and this directory enable vulnerable community members and their support workers to identify supportive café environments. They also reward the cafes by advertising their efforts to improve social connectedness.

Gold and Silver Social Spoons partner cafés are businesses with a healthy social conscience, interested in contributing towards positive change in their neighborhoods - do you know of any likeminded others? We welcome nominations and would love to hear from you if so!

So how does Social Spoons make a difference? The Program has excellent outcomes, including increased confidence and community connectedness for our vulnerable members. It also celebrates great hospitality and social mindedness within our spirited communities.

While we have received grants in the past to help support Social Spoons, continued funding is needed for the sustainability of the program. To find out how you can help make a difference and contribute to the program, visit our website; connect with us online, and help spread the word via your own social channels. Any help or funding ideas are greatly appreciated (financial donations are tax deductible).

How to use this directory:With ‘Welcome’ we have identified and badged welcoming and accessible cafes and services in our community. These can be identified by the following tabs:Gold Spoon cafes Community organisations & amenities

Refer also to the index and map (page 32- 34)

And don’t forget - just saying “hi” can make a big difference in your community.
