Before the night is over, please do the following…

Parents:

Use one sheet of paper to write questions you may have. I think I have answered them all, but please let me get through all 65 of my slides before you ask. Time is precious tonight!

Use the other sheet of paper to do the following: In a million words or less, tell me about your child. I am very excited to have your child on my squad this year. I look forward to getting to know all of them. I would like to start this process with a little help from you. Each student is special or unique in his/her own way. No one knows this better than YOU! This “assignment” gives you, the parent, a chance to tell me what you think I should know about your student- likes and dislikes; hopes and dreams; successes and failures- anything and everything which will help me to better know and understand them. Turn this in tonight.

Before the night is over, please do the following…

Students:

Use one sheet of paper to do the following: Write your personal goals for cheerleading (what would you LIKE to see happen this year?), your personal goals for your education, and your personal goals for your life. Remember; goals must be S.M.A.R.T.:

Specific

Measurable

Achievable

Relevant

Time-Related

Before the night is over, please do the following…

Students:

Use the other sheet of paper to write down your strengths and weaknesses, and what you think you can bring to the squad in order to build it up. This won’t be a part of your score, I am just interested in getting to know you. However, I ask that you take these assignments very seriously. No silly strengths like “I can eat 15 Big Macs without throwing up.” Think along the lines of how you can help the squad.

These are due tonight.

New Coach, New Year, New Format, New Rules…

Strategies for Change:

Empirical-Rational Strategy:

Using incentives to bring change

Normative Re-Educative Strategy:

Re-teaching expectations and changing behavioral norms that are expected

Power-Coercive Strategy:

Simply put: you MUST follow the rules of authority- there is NO other option

(This is a different way of saying: “If you don’t like my rules, you are not obligated to try out for this squad. There are All-Star squads available to you.”)

New Coach, New Year, New Format, New Rules…

New Format:

We will have one or more full weeks of practice to learn cheers before and immediately after school lets out for summer. Then you will be free until August.

You will have access to videos of cheers and dances. Use your summer to learn these things by heart.

You will be responsible for all variations: going front, middle, back or group peel-offs. Your cheer formation can change whenever I see the need (excessive playing/talking/etc.)

Once the season starts, you will NOT practice 5 days a week (only in the beginning)! You will already be prepared. Competition is different. Also, I expect attendance at my practices. I am not asking much from you as far as practices are concerned. If you are absent and it is not excused by me, you will get a demerit.

C- Conduct

As a cheerleader for ERHS, you will be an ambassador for the school and the community.

You represent yourself, your squad, your school, your community, your family, and me- your coach.

You are held to a HIGH standard at ALL times.

Present yourself accordingly.

There will be consequences for misrepresentation.

This includes ONLINE! (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc.)

OBEY YOUR TEACHERS!

Perform at your highest potential- don’t settle!

Maintain a 2.0 GPA (or higher!)

Squad Study Sessions (if you need help, ask!)

I must review each Progress Report and Report Card

Absent from school = Absent from practice/performance

EDUCATION COMES BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE!

**I will be running GPA checks TOMORROW. If your grades do not meet the criteria, you will be turned away from tryouts. Middle Schoolers are lucky- their GPA does not start until the first high school report card.**

E- Elevation

Elevation:

Doesn’t mean stunting!

Strive to be our very best selves.

Elevate school spirit.

Elevate our reputation.

Elevate our outlook on what cheerleading really means- it is MORE than the skirt and poms!

Page 19: Welcome! Sign in, then… Adults: Pick up ONE Tryout Packet per child and ONE Athletic Physical Packet per child. Please read the first two pages, then WAIT

R- RespectRespect:

One of the MOST important to me!

Respect teachers, parents, teammates, and MOST OF ALL, your coach!

Therefore, cheerleaders may call me: Coach Ashley, Miss Ashley, Coach Quinn, or Miss Quinn. I am flexible, but I am an adult. You may NOT call me: Just “Ashley” or just “Miss” (I really hate “Miss”)

Respect mandatory at ALL times- not just at cheerleading events.

Weekly progress report from EACH of your teachers.

Parents may have certain rules in their home, but I have my rules for my squad, and that is what you WILL follow while you are with me.

Merit/Demerit System:

You do not have to be ON the squad to begin earning these. If you cannot behave prior to the tryouts, you will face the consequences. If you can behave during tryouts, you will reap the reward (and thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for behaving. I do notice).

Once you get a merit or a demerit, they are PERMANENT. No discussion. No erasing either one!

Earning a merit or demerit before the squad selection can be positive or negative for your score.

This system was sent to administration.

Merit System:

Merits:

Can be earned in each of the five C.H.E.E.R. standards.

Earning a merit in ALL five standards and NO more than two demerits will earn an invitation to the end-of-year reward.

Demerit System:

Demerits:

Earned when C.H.E.E.R. standards are not upheld- this can be at ANY time!!!

Discussed in detail on a case-by-case basis.

Consequences range from sitting out at practices and performances to DISMISSAL from the squad- NO REFUNDS ON MONEY!!!

Dismissal = NO squad eligibility for the next year. Don’t even try to sign up.

Page 23: Welcome! Sign in, then… Adults: Pick up ONE Tryout Packet per child and ONE Athletic Physical Packet per child. Please read the first two pages, then WAIT

Demerit System:

Demerit System:

Demerit System:

As coach, I reserve the right to base how many demerits your child may earn based on the severity of the infraction. Where as one person’s misconduct incident may be less severe and earn only 1 point, another person’s misconduct incident may be more severe or repetitive and can earn more than 1 point. No discussion.

Page 27: Welcome! Sign in, then… Adults: Pick up ONE Tryout Packet per child and ONE Athletic Physical Packet per child. Please read the first two pages, then WAIT

Other Key Points:You will also need to know a few other things:

Merits and demerits and their value are at the discretion of the coach. No discussion on this.

The uniform is NEVER an option. You must purchase each piece. You will bring everything that is asked of you to each practice/performance. If not, you will not participate. Please do NOT plan with the entire squad to wear something different: do as I say.

Out of uniform includes having jewelry, not having your hair the way I say, wearing long nails or nail polish, not having the proper shoes, socks, or bra, not having your bow, not covering any visible tattoos with makeup or bandages, etc., etc., etc.

Page 28: Welcome! Sign in, then… Adults: Pick up ONE Tryout Packet per child and ONE Athletic Physical Packet per child. Please read the first two pages, then WAIT

Other Key Points:You will also need to know a few other things:

We stand (for football) or sit (for basketball) in three VERY STRAIGHT lines at ALL times. We also walk in three very straight lines when walking anywhere or visiting the opponent, hands on hips.

We stay clean- no chatting, talking, eating, playing, goofing off, checking phone etc. at ALL times (if we are not cheering).

Football and basketball players don’t play around, and neither do we. It looks sloppy and it can be dangerous!

Page 29: Welcome! Sign in, then… Adults: Pick up ONE Tryout Packet per child and ONE Athletic Physical Packet per child. Please read the first two pages, then WAIT

Other Key Points:You will also need to know a few other things:

PLEASE, please, please do NOT call or text my phone after 9:00 pm on Sunday through Monday; before 6:00 am on Monday through Friday; before noon on Saturday and Sunday.

Performances and practices before or after these times are the exception.

Emergencies are also the exception; however:

FAILURE TO PLAN ON YOUR PART DOES NOT CONSTITUTE AN EMERGENCY ON MY PART!!!

I give a lot of time to this program; please respect my personal time as outlined above. Also, it is simply proper and respectful phone etiquette. Late night calls or texts are simply rude.

**Phones will NOT be in use during practices or performances. If this becomes a problem, I will collect phones before each

practice/performance, and return them when we are done.**

Page 30: Welcome! Sign in, then… Adults: Pick up ONE Tryout Packet per child and ONE Athletic Physical Packet per child. Please read the first two pages, then WAIT

Other Key Points:

You will also need to know a few other things:

Hands on HIPS, smiles on LIPS! Yes, hands on your HIPS!!! Not crossed behind your back. Ever. Yes, your arms will get tired. Cheerleading is a sport. Athletes we cheer for are likely very tired as well.

Saying the words (and saying them LOUDLY), smiling, and showing spirit are MANDATORY!!!! Failure to do this IS an example of misconduct for a cheerleader.

If you do not want to do these things, you do not want to cheer. Again, you are not obligated to try out if you do not like my rules.

Page 31: Welcome! Sign in, then… Adults: Pick up ONE Tryout Packet per child and ONE Athletic Physical Packet per child. Please read the first two pages, then WAIT

Other Key Points:You will also need to know a few other things:

If I am unable to conduct practice, you will be unable to perform at the next performance. If I have to stop practice, you will not be prepared. I do not send out unprepared cheerleaders. EVER. Under any circumstance.

If this happens, you will still show up to the performance, completely dressed out in uniform. You will stand there, clean, and looking very cute- but you will simply stand there. Period.

Parents, you MUST be at the school or venue to pick up your child ON TIME!!!!!!!!!! I give my time happily, but I have other obligations. By law, I must stay 30 minutes after a performance/practice. After that time, your child will be asked to walk to the road, and I LEAVE. I am no longer responsible. YOU CAN EARN YOUR CHILD DEMERITS FOR THIS. NO EXCUSES, NO EXCEPTIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is a big one for me- can you tell?

**If you have constant transportation problems, please reconsider trying out.**

Page 32: Welcome! Sign in, then… Adults: Pick up ONE Tryout Packet per child and ONE Athletic Physical Packet per child. Please read the first two pages, then WAIT

Other Key Points:

You will also need to know a few other things:

Seniors:

You will NOT wear garters to Senior Night. No discussion. I will make you a sash.

The look is highly inappropriate for someone who is still a very young lady. It also doesn’t match my uniform.

Please save the garter for your wedding day. It is special for you and your future partner. Not for all of Clermont to see peeking out of your uniform. We don’t need to give guys any other reason to be looking at your nether-regions.

Page 33: Welcome! Sign in, then… Adults: Pick up ONE Tryout Packet per child and ONE Athletic Physical Packet per child. Please read the first two pages, then WAIT

Other Key Points:

You will also need to know a few other things:

Seniors:

No one girl should or will get preferential treatment over another. We will celebrate each Senior equally. We will be equally sad about each of them leaving our cheer family. We will celebrate Seniors AS A TEAM.

Parents and students alike: please, please, please, NO extravagant plans on the night of the Sr. Night game. This can be done on the Thursday or Saturday before or after.

I will ensure that each Senior is recognized equally and make sure their night is equally special.

*Mrs. Walters, please see me after this meeting.

Page 34: Welcome! Sign in, then… Adults: Pick up ONE Tryout Packet per child and ONE Athletic Physical Packet per child. Please read the first two pages, then WAIT

Other Key Points:

You will also need to know a few other things:

We will spend the afternoon before each game together.

We will get ready for the game together.

We will eat together (and with the football team).

We will prepare for the performance together (decorating locker rooms, reviewing cheers, etc).

We will bond with one another and with the team we are cheering for.

Parents, you are welcome to come! We will make it a tailgating party!

Page 35: Welcome! Sign in, then… Adults: Pick up ONE Tryout Packet per child and ONE Athletic Physical Packet per child. Please read the first two pages, then WAIT

Other Key Points:A few more things:

We will wear our hair EXACTLY the same.

We will ride buses either with the band and/or football team. Please, girls, NO fighting with your classmates! We are old enough to ignore someone who bothers us. We are also old enough not to instigate. Please, no rowdy behavior on the bus (or EVER, anywhere). Singing is okay as long as we are ALONE on the bus and as long as the song doesn’t drive me crazy (I’m sooo over “Two Chainz!” ). If bus behavior gets out of control, we will sit in ABC order and SILENT!!!

Please take note that this list may change through the year. Bear with me as I work the kinks out.

Fundraising:

Fundraising is MANDATORY!

There will be incentives!

After tryouts, you will have to pay a down payment of camp wear and camp fees.

One uniform, one bow, socks, bra, shoes. One-day at-home camp. This reserves your spot on the squad, pending that you fundraise for the rest of the fees that are MANDATORY.

Page 37: Welcome! Sign in, then… Adults: Pick up ONE Tryout Packet per child and ONE Athletic Physical Packet per child. Please read the first two pages, then WAIT

Fundraising:

Fundraising is MANDATORY!

If you are unable to meet the monetary goals necessary to pay for the rest of the uniform, you will need to pay for it out-of-pocket. Or, you will be excused from the squad: NO EXCEPTIONS, NO REFUNDS!

All uniform pieces that I ask you to buy are MANDATORY. You will get to take them home at the end of the season. They will be YOURS. Even the uniform.

No fundraising = we will wear our camp uniform at every game. We have LOTS of work to do!

Service Days:

Fundraising is the way that the community shows support for us. Therefore, we will thank them with days of service, in order to give back to the community.

Bright Futures Hours can be earned for this, but only if the work and effort put forth merits it. (This is also true for Golden Knights)

Open to ideas for this!

Break Down of Costs:

Inquire for my paperwork on the break down of costs for the squad your child is interested in, but please do not have a panic attack. This is why we fundraise. Work hard to earn the funds and you will reap the reward by getting all of this paid for, and not out of your own pocket!

There is a separate cost for Varsity, JV, and Competition- but no different cost between basketball or football. The uniform for Varsity Football is the same for Varsity Basketball, and JV Football is the same for JV Basketball. Competition is separate.

Speaking of Competition:

Competition:

Mr. Stein has suggested/mandated a few changes from what is in your packet (sorry):

A separate tryout is now mandatory. It will be sometime at the beginning of the school year. I did not choose this, it just is what it is.

You must also have a STANDING BACK TUCK (not the back handspring that was previously stated) in order to be considered.

Good news: You have all summer to get in a gym and learn to tumble. Get to work! You still need to show tumbling at this tryout, if you have it.

Yes, you can try out for competition if you don’t make one of these squads this week. You will have all summer to improve.

Now, onto what this meeting is actually about:

Tryout Fee:

This year, I have found judges from Varsity Spirit Wear and UCF Cheerleading that have volunteered to judge for FREE. This has not been the case in past years. They believe in my vision for this squad and want to see the ERHS Cheerleading Program thrive and have chosen to support this program at NO charge. We are HONORED.

That being said, there is a $5 Tryout Fee to cover dinner for the volunteers who are making it possible for your child to try out. This is a thank-you for them!

$5 IS DUE TOMORROW UPON ARRIVAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now, onto what this meeting is actually about:MIDDLE SCHOOL GIRLS:

DO NOT LEAVE SCHOOL EARLY FOR THIS!!! Moms, for real. Don’t take them out of school. Not even a minute early.

Please do not fret. I have these times in place since it is not fair for my High School students to have to wait until 4:30 to begin practice when we get out of school at 2:25. They have obligations with school, work, cheer, and other extra things.

I am HAPPY to stay with Middle School students a little bit later each day to work with them (still plan to be here at the original pick up time. You may sit QUIETLY and observe practice).

You and your child will be well-informed and more than prepared for tryouts. My tryout is more about behavior and conduct. I can teach you technique later. See the next slide for detail!

Now, onto what this meeting is actually about:

During tryouts, please remember:

Interview:

It will be an interview one-on-one with the judges. THEY decide the points they give for each response. DECISIONS ARE FINAL.

You are provided a copy of possible questions

Please be aware that others may be added (ie.: what does offense mean?, why is respect important?, explain why it is important to show respect even before you make the team, etc.) This list is a good guideline for what to expect.

Now, onto what this meeting is actually about:

Forms of Recommendation:

These were filled out by teachers, not by me, not by judges. However, some teachers have contacted me with concerns and have filled out another form on a candidate or specifically for a candidate that they know are trying out. I printed or wrote everything your child’s teacher said. If your student got a negative form, it is for a reason. Please do not be mad at ME or the TEACHER for this- let’s just get to the root of the issue. These will still be considered in the tryout because reputation, conduct, respect, and education are my TOP requirements for an ERHS Cheerleader.

Also, this due date was announced MANY times. If I do not have one for you (or all four) this will effect your score. I am VERY punctual, and you will learn to be, as well. I am NOT accepting any LATE forms. Middle School girls, yours are due TONIGHT.

*Need to see the following parents QUICKLY afterward: Billups, Rieves, Lutz, Samayoa, St. Cyr, Worrell, Brabson, Chase-Richards, Jean

Day of the Tryout:

Jordan will be my assistant. She will ensure that you and/or your child do the following:

Jordan will check your uniform: black shorts, white shirt tucked in, white socks, predominately white shoes, black bow, hair in a high pony tail. No nail polish, jewelry, or fly away hair. Day of the Tryout:Jordan will be my assistant. She will ensure that you /or your child will do the following:

Parents: You are 100% NOT allowed anywhere near the school during tryouts. Any child whose parent comes inside will earn a demerit for misconduct- for not following my rules. Drop them off, leave. Pick them up, leave.

Parents want the best for their child and can sometimes be more nervous than the child, in turn making the child anxious. They can also aggravate them by “fixing” their hair, makeup, etc. The last thing I need is a mother/daughter spat right before I need your child to perform. I need her head in the moment, not getting mad at you. They are big girls now. They can do this alone. They will be prepared.

NO PARENTS WATCHING TRYOUTS!!! Tryouts are closed to everyone.

Day of the Tryout:

No, but really…

NO PARENTS ON CAMPUS!

Seriously.

No joke!

I need your child FOCUSED.

If you come into the school, Jordan will document it and your child will get a demerit for misconduct (for not following the rules).

Day of the Tryout:

Jordan will be my assistant. She will ensure that you and/or your child will do the following:

After tryouts, the group will leave the gym and enter the Triplex… in COMPLETE silence! NO talking. The groups after you do NOT need to hear “OMG that was so hard!” “Good luck in there, you’re going to die!” “Like, I can’t believe, I like, screwed up my, like, interview.”

Day of the Tryout:

Jordan will be my assistant. She will ensure that you and/or your child will do the following:

Gather your belongings and sit QUIETLY in the Triplex area until your ride comes to get you.

Keep cell phones on SILENT or on VIBRATE. If you must take a call, do so QUIETLY.

You MUST sit IN the Triplex, not outside. Your ride can call you when they are here.

Leave through the BACK door of the Triplex (nearest the Women’s restroom).

Day of the Tryout:This is SUPER important!

Do NOT come back onto this campus after tryouts (unless there is a reason other than cheer).

Do NOT drive by slowly, trying to watch your child in case she comes out. She is not allowed out until you get there.

Do NOT sit in the parking lot and wait.

PLEASE, leave campus immediately after dropping off and picking up your child.

There will NOT be a sign posted at the school. It will be on the website. There is NO NEED to come back and loiter at the school. Go home and relax.

PLEASE BE AWARE:16 girls MAX for Varsity Football – No discussion.

20 girls MAX for JV Football – No discussion.

16-20 girls for Varsity Basketball

20-24 girls for JV Basketball

*Basketball cheer is a great sport to improve your motions for football cheerleading. If potential is seen in a girl as far as conduct, respect, and education, but the technique is not quite up to par, I will make room for them on the Basketball squad. It will be a great opportunity for them to learn the aspects of cheer. Basketball cheer is done sitting down, so girls can really focus on their movements and correct them. It is also a little more laid back, to remove the pressure of getting every movement correct (unlike football). This is why I may allow more girls on these squads, if there is an interest.

After the Tryouts:

For those who do not make the squad, scores will be made available to you and YOUR child, and YOUR child ONLY, if you feel the need to view them. You must contact ME to make an appointment for this. If you make the squad, I do not see why you will need to view your score. Congratulations, you made it!

The decision of the judges is FINAL.

I care more about conduct, education, and respect than hitting a High V. I can teach you a High V later. The score sheet is set up to reflect this.

After the Tryouts:

Contractual Agreement:

After this meeting, you will be familiar with my standards, rules, and procedures. You MUST sign my contractual agreement to be eligible to tryout and to be eligible for the team. This contractual agreement BINDS you to these standards, rules, and procedures and you and your child MUST adhere to everything I have outlined. This means you agree to my C.H.E.E.R. standards, my merit/demerit list and understand that it is FINAL, and all other side notes, rules, and regulations I have made thus far.

No signature, no cheer. Sorry.

After the Tryouts:

Parent Involvement:

If your child makes the squad, be prepared to fill out a Volunteer Form. Parent involvement is SO necessary to the success of this team.

Please note that I said Parent Involvement, not Parent Coaching. I appreciate and love each one of you, but you must go through me, just as your child does. I get the final say in everything this squad does.

After the Tryouts:

For students who make the squad:

If you are interested in doing volunteer cheerleading work and will be acting on behalf of ERHS and myself, such as conducting middle school tryouts, please be aware that you MUST get approval from ME. If you are volunteering on behalf of Rush or Pop Warner, that is separate. However, I know who is involved in what, so don’t try to find loopholes. I must approve EVERYTHING that you want to do as an ERHS cheer representative… Even if it is cheering at a nursing home. I will usually let you- I just need to be aware due to liability reasons.

After the Tryouts:

As stated before, the results will be listed on the school website.

Once you make the squad, you and your child may search [email protected] on Facebook and add “Erhs Cheerleading” as a friend or go to www.facebook.com/groups/ERHSCheerleading/ . There will be a group that will have documents, announcements, invitations to events, and other vital information you will need. Be SURE to read the group description. By signing my contractual agreement, you agree to the online rules as well.

I do not add students or parents on my personal Facebook. You will have my cell and my e-mail. I will respond to posts on the Facebook group.

Golden KnightsThis is our squad comprised of Special Needs Students

I will be accepting VOLUNTEERS for this. Any lackadaisical behavior with these Special Needs Students like I saw last season, and you WILL BE REPLACED by someone who WANTS to do it. They deserve only the best, and I have their best interest in mind at ALL times.

Please be kind to these students. LOVE them. They ARE a part of our cheer family.

I have another assistant for tryouts who is an ESE student. You will be kind to her. You will not pick on her or her speech. I have her playing music and escorting you to and from interviews. Do as she says, because she is acting on behalf of me, just as Jordan is.

Check out www.thesparkleeffect.org for more information.

*Mrs. Samayoa, see me after this meeting.

There is a one-day FREE camp for this- just pay $15 for your t-shirt (regularly $20)
