Meal Packaging Event Saturday, September 23 | 3:00—5:00 pm
Valley Presbyterian Church
On September 23 representatives from Rise Against Hunger will be at Valley Presbyterian Church (located at 17560 Chillicothe Road) to
lead a food-packing event to prepare 10,000 meals.
Rise Against Hunger’s meal packaging program uses volunteers for the assembly-line packaging of highly nutritious dehydrated meals. The
packaging process is a great way to engage people of all ages around one goal: to put faith into action by sharing food with people in need.

Internet Risks Program Tuesday, September 26 | 7:00—8:30 pm
Valley Presbyterian Church
Valley Presbyterian Church (located at 17560 Chillicothe Road) is sponsoring a program on "Risks of the Internet." The program will include
time for individual questions. The speakers will be two Officers from the Bainbridge Police Department, Officer Kurt Dreger and Officer
Ryan Patete. Some of the topics covered will include: identity theft and fraud, child stalking issues, privacy concerns, public shaming issues
and much more that these Police Officers see every week. Light refreshments will be served.

A JustHope-Federated PartnerTrip to Chacraseca, Nicaragua
November 12-19 We will have the opportunity to do maintenance at Stitching Hope or in the community, teach art, theater, dance, yoga and other classes in the
cultural center, or work on the model farm.
The cost is $825 plus airfare. This covers meals,
transportation, housing at ”Casa de Paz” Retreat House for seven days, translators, trip coordination and leadership. A non-refundable
$200 deposit is due upon registration, with the balance due by SEPTEMBER.

Social Justice Advocacy Ministry
The SJAM team is next meeting on Sunday, September 17 at 12:15 pm in the Lounge. The mission of the Social Justice Advocacy Ministry is to be a voice and witness to God’s love for all people and creation and to advocate for justice for those who are marginalized, discriminated against and denied their inherent rights as children of God and citizens of our nation and world.

Also, SJAM is sponsoring a series of movie nights that will focus on human rights, race relations, environmental issues, and more. We invite everyone from Federated Church and the larger community to join together for an evening of learning, stimulating conversation, and exploring the issues of our times. As we explore issues of social justice, questions keep coming: "What is God calling us to do? What is God asking of us? How will we respond?"

September 18 - 13th (Race relations) The first film will be "13th", an important and thought-provoking documentary focusing on the impact of the 13th Amendment which was meant to repeal slavery. Scholars, activists and politicians analyze the unfolding of how the 13th amendment was used to criminalize African Americans throughout history, and how today it fosters the U.S. prison boom. The impact of this on race relations today is staggering and eye-opening.

Help Feed the Homeless at St. Paul’s
Ohio City Power's Soup for the Soul program has been preparing lunches for our friends at St.
Paul's for four years.
These items are needed for St. Paul's outreach
program from Federated: Soup base (chicken or beef: low sodium/low fat), rice, pasta, canned tomatoes, chicken, ground turkey or
ground chicken; canned kidney beans, navy beans, and tomato paste, commercial size oregano, garlic power, salt and pepper; tuna in
water, frozen peas, wide noodles, bread crumbs, low sodium mushroom soup; pasta sauce or pizza sauce, pizza cheese and cheese slices.
Items can be marked with “SFTS” and left behind the reception desk in the Lobby or in the freezer/
refrigerator in the Tunnel. The receptionist can help get it there. Let Lisa Braun know when items are there for pick up at 440.289.1657.

Today begins our new program year and Sunday
School year! We’re so glad you joined us! It’s a reunion and a time to celebrate new beginnings.
You simply will not want to miss the all-church family event which begins at noon. It will
be held right in the parking lot!
There will be plenty of food, games and special attractions, and most of all, fellowship and fun!

Sermon series for September and October: The Seven Solae
As many of you know, October 31, 2017
marks the 500th anniversary of the day that Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses against the Catholic Church up on the
church door in Wittenberg. Although church reformation had been on the hearts and minds of many for years before that,
and much had been written and said, it was this action by Luther that marked the beginning of the Reformation, and the
birth of the Protestant Church.
The early reformers put forth three
foundational principles of reformation known as the “Solae.” This list has been added onto since, bringing it to seven:
Sola Scriptura (only scripture), Sola Gratia (only grace), Sola Fide (only faith), Solus Christus (only Christ), Soli Deo gloria
(glory to God alone), Sola ecclesia (the Church alone) and Sola caritas (charitable love alone).
We will be celebrating Reformation Sunday on October 29. For the seven
Sundays before then, beginning with Rally Day, September 10, and running through Sunday, October 22, we will be using one
of these Solae each week, along with a Lectionary scripture reading, as a theme for our worship services.
Please join us for this series to prepare our hearts and minds for this milestone
anniversary of our reformed Protestant tradition. (For more details about this series, please see page 10 of our

Emergency Clean-up Buckets Bring the Family! Bring a Friend!
As another storm approaches, and we barely have had time to respond to the needs of the victims of
Hurricane Harvey, we feel a real desire to help in any way we can. So, we have a plan! We will be assembling Emergency Cleanup Buckets and delivering them to Church World Service. We will collect /assemble buckets on September 17 at 1:00 pm at the church on Bell Street.
Each bucket costs approximately $75 to fill. You can shop on your own (following the list below exactly!) and provide a $3 processing fee for delivery (do not put the money in the bucket!). Or, donate
$78 and we will shop for you and assemble the buckets for delivery. Emergency Clean-up Bucket List – please, only these items
• One five-gallon bucket with resealable lid (If bucket has been used, clean well but do not use if it has held chemicals of any kind.)
• Four scouring pads
• Seven sponges, including one large • One scrub brush • Eighteen reusable cleaning towels (e.g. Easy Wipes)
• One 50 oz. or two 25 oz. bottle(s) of liquid laundry detergent • One 16-28 oz. bottle of liquid disinfectant dish soap • One 12-16 oz. bottle of household cleaner that can be mixed with water (no spray bottles)
• One package of 48-50 clothespins • Clothesline, two 50 ft. or one 100 ft. • Five dust masks
• Two pairs non-surgical, non-latex gloves • One pair work gloves, cotton with leather
palm or all leather • 24-28 heavy duty or contractor type 30-45
gallon trash bags on a roll and removed
from carton • One 6-9 oz. bottle of non-aerosol insect
repellent
All cleaning items must be new – all liquid items must be capped and securely tightened. Place all
items into the bucket, making sure they are packed securely to avoid damage during shipment. Snap the lid on tight and seal with
packing tape. Please do not vary from the list or add anything else to the bucket!

Sunday School—A Few Changes
Sunday School will be offered at both services. For both the 9:00 and 11:00 services (all
year) please sign your child/ren in at the desk located in the downstairs Lobby or at the small table in the Narthex.
Please make time to arrive early enough to include this check in process so we can obtain
valuable allergy information. After checking in, children will start in the Sanctuary with their parents. During the service there will be a “Time

Attention all singers! Choir practices have resumed. The Ensemble meets on Tuesdays
from 7:30 to 9:30 pm and Chancel Choir meets on Thursdays from 7:00 to 9:00 pm.
Rehearsals will be held with Marcia Snavely until our new Choir Director is brought on board. Any and all singers are welcome to

There is an opportunity to donate the altar flowers for next Sunday, September 17. This is a wonderful
way to honor or memorialize a loved one. You may take the flowers with you after the service or the Angel Flower Ministry can rearrange them into smaller bouquets and deliver them to those that may need a little cheer. If you are interested, please contact Sue Mansour at 440.668.9399 or
