Writing Activity: Fork-in-the Road
In our lives, there are moments, decisive moments, when the direction of our lives was pointed in a given direction, and because of the events of the moment, we are going in another direction. Poet Robert Frost shared this concept simply as “The Road Not Taken.” The date of a major achievement, the time there was a particularly bad setback, meeting a special person, the birth of a child, the end of a relationship, the death of a love one are all examples of these fork-in-the-road experiences. Right now, at this second, write about a decisive moment in your life. You have 10 minutes.

1. Praise: “I like this part because…”2. Question: Ask a question about
something that isn’t clear or about which you are curious.
3. Polish: “If you choose to finish this piece,
• you could add more details about the setting.”
• I’d like to see a clearer picture about this character.”
• I would enjoy more sensory descriptions about….”
Homework Using the draft you created today, highlight key
words which can be illustrated by a photograph or image.
At home, collect digital images from your camera or computer or photographs which illustrate the words you have selected.
Bring any pictures in a large labeled envelope to be scanned tomorrow. Limit yourself to 10-15 photographs.
If you have a scanner and know how to scan, it would be great if you could scan the pictures at home and bring them on a thumb drive or CD. We have 30 participants so scanning will take a long time.
